The surprises keep coming - the time line shifts on marriage equality

by: Rosi Efthim

Wed Dec 09, 2009 at 04:05:18 PM EST

UPDATE#3: Sen. Codey agrees to postpone the vote, at the request of sponsors Weinberg and Lesniak, until the Assembly Judiciary Committee has had time to hold hearing on the bill. Codey: I understand their desire to make sure this bill receives the thorough attention it deserves and therefore I have agreed to postpone tomorrow's vote until further notice.

UPDATE#2-a: When the statehouse shifts, everything shifts. GSE has email with an ask to show up at GSE HQ at 9:30, that arrived simultaneously just now with a robocall ask to show up 8am at the statehouse. We'll sort it out. If you can't take the day, you can call your legislator to say how you hope they'll vote yes on Marriage Equality, when that vote comes up.

UPDATE: More on the possible shifting time line here. Clearly there will be more opportunities to talk to members of in both houses, as our legislature considers the issue.

BREAKING, from Zach Fink at NJN News. Things are shifting. Zach's blog, so I'm going to let him tell it:

In yet another extraordinary development in the debate over gay marriage, supporters are now calling on Senate President Dick Codey to hold the bill during Thursday's Senate voting session.

In a letter to Codey from Senator Loretta Weinberg who is a prime sponsor of the bill, she asks that the Assembly be given an opportunity to consider the legislation coming off of Monday night's hearing in the Senate Judiciary committee.

Supporters of the gay marriage bill say that although it passed only narrowly by a vote of 7-6 Monday night, it was historic in nature. They argue that many more people want to be heard on this issue. In addition, a sweeping amendment by Republican Senator Bill Baroni was introduced that would exempt religious groups and institutions from having to perform same sex marriage. ( btw - opponents of gay marriage say the Baroni amendment doesn't actually do much, nor does it grant protections that are not already outlined in the constitution )

A Democratic insider who is close to the negotiations says they are "confident momentum is on their side."

Here is the bottom line: the votes are not there in the Senate. And it appears as though they are there in the Assembly - to clear the both the Judiciary committee and to pass the full house. Assembly Speaker Joe Roberts is unlikely to give dates for the upcoming hearing and subsequent floor debate, but I understand it could be early January.

Initially, members of the Assembly had said they would not consider gay marriage until the Senate passed the bill. That thinking seems to have now been turned on its head.

All eyes on Sarlo

by: Rosi Efthim

Mon Nov 16, 2009 at 10:14:19 PM EST

UPDATE: Don't miss the confirmation from Sen. Weinberg in Comments that she has a committment from Sen. Sarlo and the bill will be forwarded out of committee.

The best news of the day, of course, came via Zach Fink at NJN, who reported today that Paul Sarlo appears to have backpedaled off a statement just Friday that he wasn't going to bring marriage equality up in the Judiciary Committee unless there were enough committee votes to pass it on to the full Senate. And on Friday, he was saying those votes weren't there.

But today, a very different story. A Sarlo staffer acknowledges his boss has his own feelings on the matter but will "not allow his personal views to interfere with the will of the caucus and its leadership."

Yes, there are a lot of people in New Jersey that didn't talk about anything else all weekend. And yeah, they're not all gay. Sarlo should feel the weight of that, and if any spike of pressure led to a change in his position, then hell, I'm glad. And if it's true that Sarlo intends now to bring marriage equality forward despite his own struggle with the issue, then I think he deserves everyone's thanks. And he has mine.

Here's who's on the Senate Judiciary Committee. It isn't just Democrats who are willing to move on equality. Four Republicans - Senators Bill Baroni, Jen Beck, Kip Bateman and Sean Kean - are with us. Although the opposition disputes even that; they claim it's only two, that from tonight's NJN news broadcast (we expect to be able to post that video tomorrow).

Zach's post alludes to an internal struggle inside a party still staggering from loss. Damn right. It's been a crappy month. But I'm not going to accept the loss of the governor's race as a reason why New Jersey should not move forward to do what's right. And you shouldn't have to, either.

Quote of the Day: A testament to NJ's diversity

by: Jason Springer

Fri Jul 24, 2009 at 08:00:00 PM EDT

While people are still trying to break down everything that happened yesterday and get over the initial shock of the scope surrounding the corruption, we get this more light hearted take from Zach Fink at NJN as a status on his profile:
Zachary Fink  thinks it's a testament to NJ's diversity that Jews, Blacks, Italians, Latinos, Republicans and Democrats can all be implicated together in a corruption scandal.
And then someone responded to his status with this comment:
Yes...SIGH. New Jersey is truly living in a post racial world when the booking room of our FBI field office looks like the UN.
Like Jay said in his video yesterday, sometimes you have to laugh to keep from crying. It really is embarrassing and taints all of us that are trying to do things the right way for the right reason.
