Blue Jersey Friday Haiku

by: Jason Springer

Fri Feb 12, 2010 at 12:00:00 PM EST

If you're still digging out from the snow of the past week, maybe you want to take a break and take some time to rhyme. We can talk about states of emergency, both fiscal  and weather related. Or maybe you'd like to talk about the rush to gut COAH and take credit. Possibly you want to rhyme about Chris Mathews love for the "moderate" Scott Garrett.

Rules are simple: You compose a haiku (5 syllables, then 7, then 5) on the topic the last poster suggests. Then you get to set the next topic.

First topic: Fiscal state of Emergency

State of emergency
Christie goes for power grab
Should we be surprised

Next topic: Scott "the moderate, you're not wacky" Garrett

It's been another busy week and what better way to start the weekend than in rhyming style. There are plenty of issues out there to work with, as has become the norm lately.

The President gave the state of the Union, the Chamber of Commerce took a train ride minus some people, the healthcare roller coaster continues, Christie has talked about raising taxes and so much more. Here we go.

Rules are simple: You compose a haiku (5 syllables, then 7, then 5) on the topic the last poster suggests. Then you get to set the next topic.

First topic: State of the Union

The President talked
the words sounded pretty good
will the action match?

Next topic: Chamber train trip

It's the first Blue Jersey Friday Haiku with Chris Christie as Governor. There is so much going on that finding topics will once again not be a challenge. Do you want to rhyme about the new Governor and the first steps his administration has taken? Maybe Massachusetts and the healthcare woes have your mind going? Or possibly the state of the Democratic Party in NJ as we move towards a new chair and rebuilding?

Rules are simple: You compose a haiku (5 syllables, then 7, then 5) on the topic the last poster suggests. Then you get to set the next topic.

First topic: Supreme Court opens the flood gates

Court gives the green light
Corps can now buy and sell seats
Open the floodgates

Next topic: Governor Chris Christie

Fri Jan 08, 2010 at 11:54:25 AM EST

And the Blue Jersey Friday Haiku is back with our first rhyming of 2010. If you thought things quieted down during the holidays, they certainly heated up again this week.

The lame duck is racing to an end with full sessions in both houses yesterday. A few national Democrats decided not to see re-election to their offices causing some more headaches for our Senator, but still more Republicans aren't running again. Christie and Corzine made a deal on appointments and judgeships. And lets not forget all the news that has come out about the goodbye kiss that caused a security scare at Newark Airport and the delay because of the broken video cameras. So clearly there is plenty of material to work with.

Rules are simple: You compose a haiku (5 syllables, then 7, then 5) on the topic the last poster suggests. Then you get to set the next topic.

First topic: The Marriage Equality Vote

Some said yes, more no
some abstained, not enough votes
Back to the courts now

Next topic: The Newark Airport Security Scare

We're racing toward the end of the year and the lame duck session. There is a full plate awaiting the Legislature when they return in 2010. In Congress, they're fighting over healthcare, jobs and the economy. The prosecution and defense agree the sentencing of Joe Ferriero should wait until the Supreme Court decides cases dealing with the "Honest Services Statute." Depending on where you are in the state, you may be able to do your haiku while snowed in this weekend. So you may have a good deal of time and as usual, there is plenty of fodder to work with.

Rules are simple: You compose a haiku (5 syllables, then 7, then 5) on the topic the last poster suggests. Then you get to set the next topic.

First topic: Healthcare reform

Some say kill the bill
Others say take what you get
Health Reform tough times

Next topic: Joe Ferriero

If you thought things would slow down after the election, you were sadly mistaken. It's lame duck eve as the session starts in Trenton on Monday. The twists and turns of the marriage quality debate continue with each passing day. Over 20k gathered in AC for the League of Municipalities this week. The new Christie administration is still planning the transition. The Senate Healthcare bill was released on the Federal level and Senator Menendez talked about a potential challenge from Lou Dobbs. So once again, we're not short of topics to work with.

Rules are simple: You compose a haiku (5 syllables, then 7, then 5) on the topic the last poster suggests. Then you get to set the next topic.

First topic: Lame Duck

It all starts Monday
What will they do in Trenton?
Ready for Lame Duck

Next topic: Marriage Equality

This was another busy week that included the big healthcare vote, the beginning of transitioning to a new administration, evaluating the lessons of the campaign, honoring our Veterans, looking forward to 2010 and more. We're certainly not short on topics to write about, so lets begin the weekend in rhyming style.

Rules are simple: You compose a haiku (5 syllables, then 7, then 5) on the topic the last poster suggests. Then you get to set the next topic.

At this time next week, we will know who wins the race for Governor and have the results for the rest of the elections across the state

Here's our final Blue Jersey Friday haiku of the 2009 election season and as usual, we're not lacking for any potential topics. With the polls all over the place, campaign fundraising and spending down, the NJ Turnpike World Series, the federal health care debate moving forward and Christie having his own set of street signs, we have plenty to play with this week.

Rules are simple: You compose a haiku (5 syllables, then 7, then 5) on the topic the last poster suggests. Then you get to set the next topic.

First topic: Polls

Polls are all over
It's too close to call right now
Each vote will matter

Another week of the campaign season is down and the days keep coming off the calendar before election day.

Dennis Oury testified against Joe Ferriero. The polls continued to close, with some of them showing Corzine in the lead for the first time. The Lieutenant Governor candidates had their debate. The Leadership battles for the Senate and the Assembly rolled on, while ELEC said less money has been raised and spent on seeking office this year.

So once again we have plenty to work with to begin the weekend in rhyming style.

Rules are simple: You compose a haiku (5 syllables, then 7, then 5) on the topic the last poster suggests. Then you get to set the next topic.

First topic: Closing polls

Polls are still closing
campaigns come down the home stretch
Just that last poll counts

Next topic: campaign spending

What a week.  The polls are getting closer. We finally had our first debate. We've seen talk of property taxes and mandates. As of now, there are votes lined up for a new Senate President and Assembly Speaker. Dennis Oury plead guilty and Joe Ferriero's trial started. And Mayor Cory Booker took on Conan O'Brien. So there is plenty of fodder to work with as we begin the weekend in rhyming style.

Rules are simple: You compose a haiku (5 syllables, then 7, then 5) on the topic the last poster suggests. Then you get to set the next topic.
