Quinnipiac poll

Yet Another Poll Confirms NJ Support and Momentum in Favor of Marriage Equality

by: Jeff Gardner

Thu Apr 23, 2009 at 11:22:44 AM EDT

Today's Quinnipiac Poll confirms what should be obvious by now to anyone paying attention - the time for Marriage Equality in New Jersey is now.

The poll - with a huge sample size of over 2,000 New Jersey voters - found that New Jersey supports marriage equality by 49 to 43 percent, easily outside the margin of error. But, it isn't just the headline that legislators should care about, it's the series of other points about the poll that should really strike a chord:

- the poll was completely independent, not commissioned by any advocacy group

- support for marriage equality is up from 44-50 in December 2006. That's a 12-point turnaround in just over two years, going from -6 to +6.

- the trendlines across the board are overwhelmingly in the direction of embracing marriage equality. It's no longer just the right thing to do - it's the popular thing to do!

- voters reject by 66 to 30 percent the argument that same-sex marriage "is a threat to the traditional marriage between a man and a woman." (Even Republicans disagree with this claim 51 to 46 percent, as do those who attend religious services weekly, 52 to 43 percent.)

On the heels of action by the legislatures of Vermont and Connecticut, the time for lifting the ban on gay couples marrying in New Jersey has clearly arrived. New Jersey voters are ready for it, and (quite literally) are calling for it.

Senators - let's do this thing!

UPDATE: The new poll numbers inspired not one, but two, diaries on the subject. Nick's take is here. - - Rosi

Polling & New Jersey

by: Matthew Jordan

Thu Feb 12, 2009 at 11:04:20 PM EST

Promoted by Jason Springer:  I hope you're right. People better get busy defining Christie, before he gets the chance to tell the story his own way.

Polling in New Jersey is the definition of an inexact science.  Consistently Democrats do not poll well with voters in the run up to elections, but usually come away with solid victories.

There are several factors that go into why this happens.  For one, the Democrats simply have a stronger ground game than the Republicans.  Democrats have a registration advantage and voters in New Jersey have been hesitant to vote for Republicans on the statewide level.  While Democrats have been expanding their message to diverse parts of the state, Republicans are essentially targeting one voting bloc: white middle, to upper class voters.

The recent Quinnipiac Poll with hypothetical match ups between Corzine and potential Republican challengers are especially flawed for several reasons.

Quinnipiac Poll: Clinton: 48%, Obama 43%

by: Juan Melli

Mon Feb 04, 2008 at 08:16:56 AM EST

Game on.
"Sen. Obama has put together a coalition of blacks and independents to dramatically narrow the gap in just the last few days in New Jersey, but the big question remains: Will there be enough of these new, young, first time voters showing up to pull a surprise on Super Tuesday?" said Clay F. Richards, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.
Overall, Clinton is ahead 48%-43% and leads 54%-36% among women and 56%-36% among white voters. Obama leads 51%-40% among men and 67%-22% among black voters.

The poll was conducted between Jan 30 and Feb 3 and has a margin of error of +/- 4.3%.

More Polls: Menenedez Maintains Lead

by: Juan Melli

Mon Nov 06, 2006 at 07:21:14 AM EST

The latest Quinnipiac University poll has Bob Menendez with a 5 point lead - the same as on October 31. He leads Tom Kean Jr by 48-43. Interestingly, Menendez's advantage among men (48-42) is larger than that among women (47-44).

According to the USA Today/Gallup poll, Bob Menendez holds a 10 point lead among likely voters, 50-40. A month ago the same poll had Menendez ahead by just 3 points.

Budget Woes: Wait and See

by: Sharon GR

Fri Jan 27, 2006 at 04:01:05 PM EST

The Quinnipiac poll numbers from yesterday show that we're worried about the budget: 54% see very serious problems in our budget, 38% see somewhat serious ones. In general, we'd rather see services cut than our taxes raised, 57% to 28%. And we absolutely don't want a gas tax, even if it's to fix up the roads: 69% oppose that (increased 12 points from the same time last year.)

So, what are we gonna do about it?

Poll: Menendez statistically tied with Kean Jr

by: Juan Melli

Wed Jan 25, 2006 at 11:39:45 AM EST

A Quinnipiac University poll finds that NJ registered voter pick Menendez over Kean Jr by 38%-36% while 22% remain undecided (MOE: +/- 2.8%), while a Rasmussen poll of 500 likely voters has Kean up 42%-35%. Bush's disapproval/approval in NJ is a dismal 59%-36%. By a 58%-38% margin, voters think the war in Iraq was a mistake. Full results.
