Phillies

Yankees win!

by: Hopeful

Wed Nov 04, 2009 at 11:59:00 PM EST

The New York Yankees defeat the 2008 World Series champs, the Philadelphia Phillies, to win their 27th championship. Phillies showed toughness and heart, and I hope it's a bit easier to lose when just last year they enjoyed the ultimate victory.

"A Keg tapped at both ends." Well, it's time to tap back.

(cross posted at www.politickernj.com)

So, there you have it:

Cheese Steak vs. Hot Dog. South Bronx vs. South Philly. The Hudson vs. The Delaware. The City That Never Sleeps vs. The City of Brotherly Love. The Statue of Liberty vs. The Liberty Bell. Philadelphia Daily News vs. The New York Daily News.

Where WC Fields once said, "I once spent a year in Philadelphia, I think it was on a Sunday. "  And Jay Leno once said, "The crime problem in New York is getting really serious. The other day the Statue of Liberty had both hands up. "

And just where is New Jersey with all of this? Just as Ben Franklin said, "A keg tapped at both ends".

Well, it's time to tap back.

What state will NY Yankees fans and Phillies fans have to pass through? Us. What roads will they have to travel on to get to their respective stadiums between now and next weekend? Ours. Which bathrooms will they be using if they drink too beer much at a game? Which gas stations will they use to fill up their tanks? Ours, that's whose. Forget 'Pay to Play':

New Rule: "Pay to Pass Through."

Set up EZPass to detect the Phillies 'P' and the Yankees 'NY' and quadruple the tolls. Charge them to use the bathrooms. If a Yankees and/or Phillies fans stops here for gas, charge'em a  'pump your own gas' surcharge. If they stop to eat in a NJ restaurant, add a World Series travel fee.

We have state debt in New Jersey, and now's our shot to have help from Yankees and/or Phillies fans pay it down.

So, raise your beer to Ben Franklin: He had the right idea. He was just a century or two too early. And just had no way to pay for it.

(In the interest of complete disclosure, Ben would have most likely been a Phillies fan, where as I am a life-long Yankees fan. Prediction: Yanks in six.)

Deep thought on the political impact of the NJ Turnpike Series

by: Jason Springer

Mon Oct 26, 2009 at 12:18:38 AM EDT

Congratulations to the Yankees and their fans on advancing to the World Series.  I anxiously await the trash talking that will commence between Yankee and Phillie fans across the state.

On the political implications, I would say that Jon Corzine is the winner. Because how many more potential voters in New Jersey will be seeing his ads with the Yankees playing the Phillies than any other combination of teams. He probably couldn't ask for anything more as you will have the possibility of 5 games leading up to election day where all eyes will be on Fox.

The fun will begin Wednesday night.

New Jersey Baseball Trash Talking Thread

by: Hopeful

Tue Sep 01, 2009 at 04:04:10 PM EDT

With August over, we're coming into the final stretch of the baseball regular season -- and that means it's time for trash-talking on an open thread while we wait for tonight's radio show. It's my post, so I'll put the local teams in order of whether I'd like them to win, which I'm happy to say is also the order of how good they are!

At 83-48, my New York Yankees have the best record in baseball and, more importantly, a good lead of 6.5 games over the Boston Red Sox. Yankees fans are feeling good, but you know the old saying: "The 27th Championship is the hardest one."

The defending champion Philadelphia Phillies are 75-53 and have a commanding 7.5 game lead. It's weird to see happy Philadelphia fans, but it sure beats listening to the count of the years since a championship in four major sports. That makes South Jersey a better place since last November.

The Mets look like a disaster at 59-72. Tell me why there's reason to believe.

Now, I know some of our readers are bored by the above, so for them, I provide this AFI video of Alfred Hitchcock explaining how to make baseball interesting:

NJ-04: Zeitz: Congratulations Phillies!

by: Zeitz for Congress (NJ-4)

Thu Oct 30, 2008 at 12:02:32 PM EDT

Here's what Josh Zeitz had to say about the Phillies huge win last night:

First of all, congratulations to the Phillies and their long-suffering fans. I know they've had to wait 28 years to win a championship, and even their last game took three days thanks to the rainout. But that only makes winning all the sweeter. Great job!

Also, it's no coincidence that the previous World Championship for the Phillies came in the same year that New Jersey's Fourth Congressional district last changed their Congressman. 28 years was long enough to wait for the Phillies, and it's long enough for Chris Smith to be in Congress. It's time to bring about the change we need right now.

South Jersey wins World Series

by: Hopeful

Wed Oct 29, 2008 at 10:04:53 PM EDT

Yes, when your region is defined by "Eagles stuff" that means the Philadelphia Phillies are your home team. Congrats to all the fans, you have been waiting so long for a championship!

Congratulations to the Phillies

by: Hopeful

Wed Oct 15, 2008 at 11:58:15 PM EDT

They've won the National League pennant on their way to the World Series.  As a South Jersey Yankees fan, I'd still like to see them win on behalf of my long-suffering neighbors in the Philadelphia media market.

This is your thread to talk trash on baseball.
