Lieutenant Governor

Quote of the Day: I reject the box-checking

by: Jason Springer

Sun Jan 18, 2009 at 02:06:08 PM EST

For the first time, we will have an elected Lieutenant Governor on the ballot this November. The speculation has already begun over who Corzine might be looking toward to fill the role.  Newark Mayor Cory Booker was one name mentioned, but this weekend he reiterated that he's not in the running.  He said all along he likes the job he has, but also had some thoughts on who should be considered and the selection process overall:
As for people Booker likes as candidates for lieutenant governor, he suggested, "my big brother Mayor in Trenton, Mayor Doug Palmer, (state Sen.) Barbara Buono (D-Middlesex), chair of the senate finance committee. We're in a budget crisis, after all. And I have to say, (U.S. Rep.) Rush Holt (D-Princeton), you don't hear his name mentioned too much, but I'm a huge fan of his.

"I will say, I reject the box-checking on a choice like this. I don't think the candidate should be picked on the basis of race or gender or north-south status. Just the best person," the mayor added.

That's the first time I've heard Holt's name mentioned.  There is an opening now for the third name in the discussion with Booker's departure.  Who else do you think should be on the list and why?

Corzine should line up his Lieutenant Governor now

Like many people, I think the recent Senate Primary said a lot about next year's race for Governor, but for entirely different reasons. While the conventional wisdom was that Rob Andrews was taking a test-run at a real statewide campaign next year, the tone and substance of the campaign belied that as a motive (and I think the outcome of the campaign pretty much eliminates that as a possibililty). Turns out, Andrews was running for Senate because he wanted to be in the Senate - just like he said.

But, what was happening on the sidelines spoke volumes, and Governor Corzine would be wise to have listened. When powerful figures from around the state came out for Andrews - from Joe Ferriero's aborted effort to back Andrews in Bergen, to the array of powerful state senators and other influential leaders in democratic-vote-rich Middlesex, Union and Essex counties - they were also saying, "we're not afraid of a primary, and we're ready to take sides."

So, when speculation inevitably turns to choosing New Jersey's first Lieutenant Governor next year, I think the good Governor would do well to identify his potential running mate early, and possibly ward off a primary, rather than wait until after next year's primary to name someone.

And the person he should pick is...

Lieutenant Governor: No Longer a Patronage Job

by: mikeshapiro

Tue Mar 18, 2008 at 10:20:25 PM EDT

Last week's rapid decline of Governor Eliot Spitzer and this week's elevation of Lieutenant Governor David Patterson to the highest office in New York State Government bear important lessons for New Jersey politics.  Voters will elect the first Lieutenant Governor of the State in 2009, when Governor Corzine runs for re-election.  The Lieutenant Governor will not run in a primary since the gubernatorial candidates will choose their respective Lieutenant Governor running mates thirty days after the Primary.  The Governor will run with the Lieutenant Governor on a single ticket for the same term of office.  Names previously bandied about for the spot in New Jersey are not heavy-weights by any sense of the word but rather are representatives of large constituencies in areas key to Democratic or Republican success in State elections.  With Spitzer's fall from grace, the possibility of having a Lieutenant Governor in New Jersey become the Governor is very real, especially to New Jersey voters.

Corzine's Temporary Exit Allows for Possible Mischief

by: mikeshapiro

Wed Apr 25, 2007 at 11:39:07 PM EDT

Cross-Posted from ShapTalk.com:

Governor Corzine's tragic accident has left him temporarily incapacitated, leaving the President of the State Senate, Senator Dick Codey (D-West Orange), as the Acting Governor.  The change in leadership comes at a precarious time for Corzine's Administration.  With high poll numbers and several accomplishments under his belt, Mr. Corzine had plans to make some fiscally responsible changes to the State's budget this year.  While those plans are theoretically still on the table, it will be Senator Codey and his colleagues in the State Senate and Assembly who will decide the fate of the State budget.  Since Senator Codey will be Acting Governor while presiding over the Senate, there are significant issues regarding the separation of powers that are especially troubling given that the government's most important subject matter, the State budget, will be considered during this time period.  Even more interesting is the mischief that can now take place should Senator Codey decide to be more than just a caretaker for the next few weeks or months.
