The Bergen County Executive race is being overtaken by the plans of Governor Christie. First, the other day County Executive Dennis McNerney went after Kathleen Donovan over the "millionaire's tax" invoking the NJ Transit fare hikes:"Kathleen Donovan has been a politician for three decades, so she should know the ramifications mass transit fare hikes and massive education funding cuts will have for Bergen County taxpayers and their children," McNerney said. "Ms. Donovan should join me in asking the Governor to reconsider his tax cut for the rich before they decide to make Bergen County's middle class balance the state's checkbook." Instead of asking the Governor to reconsider, she said placing undo burdens on some people hurts everyone. She wasn't willing to stand up to her Governor, but the latest Christie proposal to get rid of the Blue Laws that keep businesses closed on Sundays in order to get the tax revenues has invaded the County Executive talk:"Clearly, this is an issue that should and will be left to the voters," said Donovan, who has said she would vote against the repeal. Donovan has also noted that the courts have upheld a local Paramus ordinance prohibiting work of any kind on Sundays. That response didn't end the issue as McNerney pressed further calling on Donovan to join him in demanding the removal of the proposal from the Governors budget altogether. The Blue Laws don't necessarily break down along party lines and while they don't make sense to many outside of Bergen County, there has always been a fight to get rid of them in the past. How much will Donovan stand up to her Governor in order to fight his plan? No doubt the Democrats will take every opportunity to raise the issue and make her stand up further than saying there should be a referendum. The Bergen County Republicans viewed this seat as an opportunity opportunity for a pickup, but Democrats have speculated the tide is turning as the Governor adds some extra hurdles in the race.

As the final weeks of the Republican primary unfold, Chris Christie and Steve Lonegan will be busy campaigning, trading criticisms of one another, and making the case on the air waves and the internet that they alone are best suited to take on Jon Corzine in this November's gubernatorial election.
Corzine, and whoever wins the GOP nomination on Primary Day, will also undertake the historic task of selecting an individual to run as their respective party's candidate to be the first Lieutenant Governor in New Jersey history. Below the fold is a list of ten possible Republican contenders. It is subjective and, more than anything, written to solicit the opinions of Blue Jersey readers on the strengths and weaknesses of each potential pick.
Please click the headline, read on, comment away, and look out this Thursday for an analysis of potential Democratic choices for Lieutenant Governor.

Things in Bergen County are much worse for Tom Kean Jr than I originally thought. Bill Albers at Politicsnj has all the details. Guy Talarico will be staying in power as county chairman, the divisions between the BCRO seem to be as wide as ever, and the conservative wing of the Republican party is in control and will make Kean Jr's job in the county - a county he needs to win to have a chance in November - a living hell.
Alan Marcus, campaign manager for Kathleen Donovan, and challenger to BCRO chairman Guy Talarico, last night announced he's dropping out of next week's reorganization election: And, as Kathleen Donovan's campaign comes to a close, so does the campaign of Alan Marcus for Bergen County Republican Organization Chairman. "Caliguire should be the person to designate the Chairman of the county party," said Marcus. "Todd clearly does not share my views, and he's entitled to a candidate for County Chair who does."

Holy shit. This is a big upset that few were expecting:
Bergen County Executive (Republican)
Todd Caliguire 51%
Kathleen Donovan 49%
This is bad news for the Kean Jr campaign. Caliguire and his slate (which also won) is allied with the incompetent Bergen County Republican chair Guy Talarico. Donovan was allied with Alan Marcus, who is challenging Talarico for county chair. Bergen - the most populous county - is also considered a "swing" county. Junior's campaign was probably hoping that Talarico would get the boot soon, but this victory strengthens his hand and could help keep him in power. The Kean Jr campaign can't be happy tonight.

Use the comments below to predict the results in tomorrow's primary (and your justification for it, if any). The person with the most accurate guess for the NJ-5 (D) results will get a free Blue Jersey t-shirt. In case of a tie, the earlier prediction wins.
US Senate (R): Tom Kean Jr / John Ginty
NJ-5 (D): Camille Abate / Paul Aronsohn
NJ-5 (R): Michael Cino / Scott Garrett
NJ-13 (D): Joe Vas / Albio Sires
Bergen County Executive (R): Kathleen Donovan / Todd Calaguire
Harrison mayor (D): Raymond J. McDonough / Michael Hinchcliffe

What Will Junior Do?
So Tom Kean Jr. has 3 days until Tuesday to make a decision and Bergen County Republican Chair Guy Talarico says the clock is ticking...
According to PoliticsNJ, Bergen County GOP Chairman Guy Talarico has given U.S. Senate candidate Tom Kean Jr three days to decide whether he will run on the organization line. READ the letter
This is made more interesting by the fact that it's set against the backdrop of the infighting withing the Bergen County Republican Organization Junior has to choose. Will he run on the line of Party chairman Talarico and Todd Calguire? Or will he run on the line with Alan Marcus who is callenging Talarico for chair along with Kathleen Donovan? Donovan and Calaguire are both vying in the primary to unseat Democratic County Executive Dennis McNerney in November.
I'm gonna sit back, make some popcorn and enjoy the show. Won't you join?
