Below are the 3Q fundraising totals that each presidential candidate raised in NJ. Clinton blew everyone else away, beating NJ GOP darling Rudy Giuliani by a quarter million dollars. She raised three times more than her nearest Democratic rival Barack Obama. Surprisingly, Edwards comes in fourth with about $100,000, behind Bill Richardson with $125,000.
The fundraising totals for the Democrats closely follow the polls in state. The latest Quinnipiac poll showed Clinton leading with 45% of the vote - three times that of Obama's 15% and Edwards with just 7% (other polls have similar margins).
| Hillary Clinton | $1,137,472 |
| Rudy Giuliani | $886,556 |
| Barack Obama | $368,590 |
| John McCain | $128,594 |
| Bill Richardson | $124,625 |
| Mitt Romney | $114,250 |
| John Edwards | $104,715 |
| Fred Thompson | $77,320 |
| Ron Paul | $70,867 |
| Joe Biden | $66,615 |
| Chris Dodd | $52,284 |
| Mike Hucakbee | $7,450 |
| Dennis Kucinich | $5,449 |
| Tom Tancredo | $4,635 |
| Tommy Thompson | $4,600 |
| Sam Brownback | $4,158 |
| Duncan Hunter | $1,130 |

This question is raised in an article on the NJ page of the Campaigns & Elections website.
The theory presented is that if no major candidate enters the Democratic pool of candidate by November 1, there is going to be a significant amount of buyer's remorse amongst current Clinton supporters as the inevitability question becomes an electability question, which will dramatically shrink the polling gap that currently exists between Clinton and the other candidates, especially Barack Obama and John Edwards and particularly in early primary states.
With so many states voting between the beginning of January and February 5 and each of the front-running candidates having strengths and weaknesses in different states, it is reasonable to believe that if Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, and South Carolina do not produce a clear-cut winner going into the February 5 primaries, no single candidate would win enough delegates to claim the nomination on the first ballot at the Democratic National Convention in Denver next summer.

Neither Barack Obama nor John Edwards will attend the New Jersey Democratic State Committee conference taking place from September 6th-8th in Atlantic City. Candidates were given the flexibility to visit on any of the three days, Thursday through Saturday. John Edwards will be in New York City on Thursday night, but he still couldn't find time to make it. Barack Obama's excuse is a fundraiser with Oprah Winfrey at her home in Santa Barbara on Saturday night. So why not go on Thursday or Friday?
We're not alone - most other states not named Iowa or New Hampshire are getting the same treatment. Moving the primary up to February 5th made no difference. We're still not relevant to the candidates.
I wonder if Clinton would have showed up if she hadn't received the endorsement of a huge chunk of the state's political establishment (probably). By the same token, that may also be why the other candidates aren't bothering to show. It's kind of hard to blame them. They think it's a done deal. And it very well may be, but from my conversations with political operatives, there are a lot of people not happy with the decision by state leaders to back Clinton. There is a lot of untapped energy out there. And things may be significantly different from four years ago, but Howard Dean's speech at the 2003 conference played a big part in building excitement and securing numerous endorsements from state leaders. Obama and Edwards are missing out on an opportunity (Dean, by the way, will also not be attending).
So to Obama, Edwards and the rest of the gang, I say "YEAARRRRGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!"

There's a new New Jersey poll from Eagleton Center for Public Interest Polling. For the Democratic Primary, the results from 421 Democratic or "lean Democratic" voters:
| Hillary Clinton | 45% | | Barack Obama | 21% | | John Edwards | 16% | | Don't Know | 10% | | Joe Biden | 4% | | Dennis Kucinich | 1% | | Bill Richardson | 1% | | Chris Dodd | 0% | | Mike Gravel | 0% |
"Someone else" and refused to answer got 1% each. The margin of error is about 5%.
So can anyone but Hillary Clinton win the race here? She is even ahead of her national numbers. Back in March 2006, she polled 48%, so she is unchanged since then. On the other hand, they did ask Clinton voters if they are "very sure about voting for Clinton; or might you change your mind before the primary?" 51% of Clinton voters (and 46% Democrats overall) are very sure, and 48% (52% overall) might change. That suggests to me that there is plenty of room for someone who runs a good campaign and wins in the early states to jump past Clinton.
But there's no doubt Clinton is in a enviable position, and seems to be guaranteed to finish at least second even in the unlikely case she loses all her weak supporters.

Promoted by NJDem: Nice job with the video JRB(I've started a new blog to discuss national politics, history and other events that interest me, called Public Ledger. One of the things I'll be doing is making video entries from time to time, so here is one such effort discussing the Democratic candidates' response to question on marriage equality, and why popular misconceptions are making it harder to achieve. Thanks!)

We've done several monthly Blue Jersey 2008 presidential strawpolls so far.
But since Blue Jersey wasn't around during the primaries in 2003/2004, let's find out who we supported back then. Unlike the strawpolls, this isn't asking who you voted for, as the nomination was clinched by the time of Jersey's June 2004 primary. Tell us who you primarily supported before the nominee had been decided.

After Iraq, probably no issue is more important to New Jersey than health care. Across America, more than 40 million people will do without healthcare at some point this year. As of 2005, 1.32 million of them lived in New Jersey.
I like Barack Obama's opening statement on this:
The United States spends twice as much per person on health care as every other developed country in the world, but 45 million Americans don't have health coverage. Health care premium costs are growing five times faster than wages, and half of all bankruptcies are caused by medical bills. More and more businesses are struggling with health costs, or dropping coverage altogether.
Stay with me after the drop.

For five straight months, John Edwards has killed the entire Democratic field in the Blue Jersey straw poll. That's great news for those of us who support John Edwards, but it isn't going to do a single thing about making him the next President of the United States.
New Jersey moved its primary forward so we would have a say in determining the Presidential candidates - but this primary looks to be over fairly quickly at the turn of the year. It's time to get serious about putting the best Democrat forward and that means organizing, fundraising, and educating people about the '08 Presidential race.

If I read New Jersey politics correctly, the majority of people in the state want an end to the war in Iraq. So I thought I'd take a look at the stances of the "big three" Democratic contenders and see where they stand. Are the differences "minor" as Hillary Clinton claims or is there some sort of substance to their differences.
Full disclosure: I support John Edwards and my boss hasn't told anyone who he supports.

Once again, it's the fifth of the month and time for our 2008 Presidential Strawpoll!
This one is a bit different because I took out the "Don't know" option. By now, there have been several debates and detailed policy positions released, so most of us have a fairly good idea of who the candidates are and what they stand for. Over the next few months, your support can and probably will change. But let's get a snapshot at where you are today, okay? So have at it below and please leave your thoughts in the comments.

The New York Times has updated its Presidential big donor maps based on the FEC disclosure reports. As I did earlier for the New Jersey Republican big donors, I've made a table with the breakdown into North Jersey (zip codes 07000-07999) and Central/South Jersey (08000-08999). Again, I caution you that only people who gave $250 or more are included. [Update: I forgot to say that numbers are in thousands of dollars.]
Obama and Edwards are pretty comparable in New Jersey. Clinton beats both of them put together. There's no doubt she is very formidable here in New Jersey. Richardson badly underperforms compared to his national numbers, while nearby senators Dodd and Biden do fairly well in comparison.
| Candidate | North | Central/South |
|---|
| Clinton | 571 | 238 | | Obama | 320 | 76 | | Edwards | 227 | 74 | | Dodd | 77 | 24 | | Biden | 59 | 13 | | Richardson | 35 | 17 | | Kucinich | 6 | 0 | | Gravel | 1 | 0 |

ARG just a new poll of New Jersey primary voters.
American Research Group: (Mar 29-Apr 2)
Likely Democratic primary voters [unaffiliated]
Hillary Clinton 37% [43%]
Barack Obama 23% [20%]
John Edwards 9% [9%]
Joe Biden 9% [7%]
Bill Richardson 6% [4%]
Chris Dodd 2%
Dennis Kucinich 1% [2%]
Undecided 14% [13%] I haven't found data from previous months so I can't say much about the trend, but I would have expected Clinton to be further ahead. The number in brackets is how the votes of unaffiliated "likely primary voters" breaks down.
Note - ARG has different numbers posted on their front page showing Edwards tied with Biden at 9%. ARG can't explain the discrepancy and someone is "looking into it." If this changes the above analysis, I'll post an update.
Update: ARG has updated their website with new numbers. Joe Biden and John Edwards are tied at 9%.
