Jerramiah Healy

Healy's principles costs Jersey City $400,000

by: Thurman Hart

Tue Aug 19, 2008 at 09:46:33 PM EDT

Earl Morgan, one of my favorite writers at the Jersey Journal, tells us today that Mayor Healy - defended on this site to me as a "man of principles" and a politician who exists outside of the machinations of Hudson County politics - is costing Jersey City $400,000 to settle a sexual harrassment case.

The suit was filed by 25-year officer Marisa Johnston, who accused former Police Chief Robert Troy, among others, of creating a hostile work environment while he was her superior in the department's Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

Healy appointed Troy within days of taking office in November 2004.  He defended the incompetent chief throughout his tenure, and when he retired, Healy stuck him in the Parking Authority.

Here's the "principle" that has guided Da Mare:

Johnston's lawsuit was one of two filed simultaneously against Troy in 2005. The other court action was brought by another female cop, Valerie Montone. The Montone suit is still pending.

Montone, a 25-year cop who is still a member of the JCPD with the rank of sergeant, named Troy and Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy in her lawsuit.

Montone claimed Healy and Troy blocked her from moving up in rank after both she and Johnston supported former Assemblyman Louis Manzo when he opposed Healy in the 2004 mayoral race.

The emphasis is mine.  Because, you know, I come not to praise Healy, but to point out his principles.  On a personal note, I've seen these women on patrol, and they do their uniform proud.  Shame on Healy.

Jersey City - Where everyone wants to be mayor

by: Thurman Hart

Mon Aug 18, 2008 at 01:27:27 PM EDT

If you listen to Jerramiah Healy, Jersey City is the bestest place in the whole world to live.  And, according to the same source, it's all because of Jerrmiah T. Healy.  But for someone who has supposedly done such a wonderful job, he sure has a lot of people gunning for him.

Of course, the big news is the big fish - former mayor, former gubernatorial candidate, and current debting scalliwag Bret "don't call me Favre" Schundler has announced that he will announce he is running.  I assume he's waiting for a favorable ruling on that campaign debt.  Maybe there are enough stupid people to sign a contract with him, you never know.  There's a hundred and eighty thousand good reasons not to, but it's a free country - and, hey, that's the going rate for working for Schundler - free!  Ha!

Tuesday Top Three

by: Thurman Hart

Tue Jul 22, 2008 at 05:52:18 PM EDT

In honor of The Dark Knight, the twins are helping me bring the news to you directly.

First up, number three without a bullet, the fundraiser that wasn't - insert your favorite stupid Springsteen reference here.

This is news because the only way Republican Senate hopeful whats-his-name can get mentioned is for Frank Lautenberg to screw up.  That happened when plans for a boss fundraiser were cancelled.  Lautenberg's efforts were painted as scalping tickets.  But as the invitation makes clear he wasn't selling the tickets at all.  By jumping the gun on cancelling the concert, the Lautenberg campaign gives the impression that something was shady.

The only shady thing I can find is the connection to Jim McQueeney - which is surprising as polluted water in the Hudson River.  As Wally points out, McQueeney has actually worked for Lautenberg's campaign before.  So as long as McQueeney discloses his connections, it's cool with me.  The only people that might have any problem with this are the three Republicans that watch his show.

Move along folks, not only is there nothing to see, but there's no reason to be seen while seeing nothing.

Jump with me.

Campaign Roundup for Wednesday, April 2, 2008

by: Scott Weingart

Wed Apr 02, 2008 at 08:52:33 AM EDT

NJ-Pres: Rasmussen poll
  • A Rasmussen poll released Monday found Republican John McCain leading both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama inside the margin of error in New Jersey.  McCain, who leads Obama 46-45 and Clinton 45-42, is boosted by his 61% favorability rating in the state.
  • NJ-Sen: The Republicans

  • An FDU poll finds that three in four Republicans don't know who they will vote for in the upcoming US Senate primary.
  • NJ-Sen: The Democrats

  • Frank Lautenberg says he will pour $2 million of his own money into defending his seat from a Rob Andrews primary challenge.

  • Two two big New Jersey mayors, Newark's Cory Booker and Jersey City's Jerramiah Healy, who is also HCDO chair, are supporting Lautenberg.

  • All six New Jersey House Democrats who are running for re-election to the House this year have pledged to run on a line with Lautenberg in the primary. At least two of the six, Frank Pallone (NJ-06) and Steve Rothman (NJ-09), have senatorial ambitions of their own.
  • NJ-02: Van Drew staying out

  • Jeff Van Drew chickens out again and declines to challenge LoBiondo.
  • NJ-09: Wildes wants in

  • The power-hungry Michael Wildes wants to challenge Steve Rothman in the Democratic primary for his Congressional seat.
  • Atlantic City Mayor: Conflicts of interest?

  • Incumbent Mayor Scott Evans questioned Lorenzo Langford's ability to serve the city that is trying to recover an $850,000 settlement from him. In return, Langford criticized the mayor for approving a $200,000 settlement for a former fire captain in the fire department where Evans served as battalion chief.

    No Sense in Jersey City

    by: Thurman Hart

Fri Feb 15, 2008 at 03:31:38 PM EST

I can remember when I was a kid and one of us boys would do something that made no sense to a perfectly logical grown-up mind, my Grandma would sometimes exclaim, "I swear, if God gave you any sense you'd take it out and play marbles with it!"  Maybe Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy should have met my Grandma.

The Jersey Journal tells us how the Mayor's dim-witted decision to continue dragging his shameful behavior across the headlines has now become a set-up for a conflict-of-interest story.

John Weingart, associate director of the Eagleton Institute of Politics at Rutgers University, said that as mayor and his attorney's boss, Healy could reward or punish Matsikoudis depending on how he performs on the mayor's behalf in the courtroom.

The attorney's hiring leaves open the perception that any future pay raise for the "research officer" may be perceived as legal fees that are being paid by taxpayers.

I'd take it a step further.  It makes me wonder if the "research officer" - what exactly would that be, anyway? - position was created specifically to entice Matsikoudis into taking the case.  I mean, Healy's case is an iron-clad loser from start to finish - his reputation in Bradley Beach is crap, the officers' reputation is impeccable, Healy admits to having been drinking that night...How much worse could it get?  All that is missing is video of the Mayor showing his hairy butt (again).

If ever a story screamed for investigation, this one is it.  But a mayor isn't big enough fish to draw Chris Christie's attention (plus the fact that Mayor Healy is as good a friend a Republican can get in Hudson County).  So who can we call on to stop the insanity?

Oh well, at least we can all play marbles.

Growing Opposition to Corzine's School Funding Formula

    by: Juan Melli

Wed Jan 02, 2008 at 08:08:36 PM EST

Earlier today representatives from Jersey City - including legislators and mayor Healy - met with governor Corzine to discuss their concerns with his school funding formula. It looks like urban opposition to the plan may be growing. As late as 4:45pm this afternoon, Newark mayor Cory Booker had no public events planned for tomorrow (we know because strangely, his office explicitly announces when there are no events scheduled). But tonight his office announced a late addition to his schedule for tomorrow morning at the State House:
Mayor Booker, Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy and representatives of the Legislative Black Caucus and the New Jersey chapter of the NAACP join together in stance on Governor?s proposed school funding formula.
It doesn't explicitly state that they're opposed, but unless Corzine changed his plan over the last few hours, I don't see what else it could mean (Update: confirmed that they will indeed oppose the formula). Either way, the plan shouldn't be rushed through during the lame duck session. It already calls for half a billion dollars in increased spending on education while we have a structural budget deficit of over $3 billion. That increase may or may not be needed to ensure that students receive a good education, but it shouldn't be rushed through without an honest, open and public debate.

    Healy Scooters Towards Appeal

    by: Hudson Observer

Tue Jul 03, 2007 at 02:39:04 PM EDT

Jersey City Mayor Healy is officially appealing his conviction by trial of a disorderly person charge.  In doing so, Healy is displaying the common sense of George W. Bush and the legal finesse of Scooter Libby.

Even if you think Healy is 100% innocent - and I clearly don't - this is just the sort of stubborn non-sense that has made George W. Bush the worst President in history.  Healy can easily afford the $828 fine - I'm sure he's easily spent four times that amount in legal fees.  And I understand that it isn't about the money for him.  It's about pride.

    See me after the flip.

Healy: Too Drunk to Drive his Machine

    by: Hudson Observer

Mon Jun 25, 2007 at 12:24:55 AM EDT

Our Dearly Inebriated Mayor, Drunk-a-my-assa Healy has provided yet another embarrassment to the city he has been told to his face that he doesn't run.  Fresh from making himself look stupid as can be on trial in Bradley Beach, the Mayor called on his GOP operative, Carl Cziplicki, to help him gear up his machine for a public show of support.  The problem is, the curtain was open and the "funny little man" (an apt description of Mayor Drinks-a-lot) was on display for everyone to see.  From the Political Insider column:
For the rest of the week, the newspaper has been sent a score of faxes and e-mails decrying the "biased" and "inflammatory" coverage in the Journal. Each letter is full of praise for the mayor and how the writer has known him for a long time and what a wonderful family he has.

"The Jersey Journal would be wise to begin to hire reporters as honest, human and good-spirited as our Honorable Mayor Healy, whose only fault was being a good Samaritan," was on one typewritten fax signed by Richard Mato.

The first thing one gathers from these faxes and e-mails is that the art of penmanship is long gone. The other is that no one wrote their own letter. Most were prepared by someone in the political organization. None contains a phone number. One mistakenly left a woman's number, it was called and she said she feels exactly as the letter states, but that she did not write it.

"My committee man came by and I signed it," she said.

Jill Hazelbaker must be hard at work in Jersey City's City hall.  But wait, it gets better after the click:
