Polis & Potosnak Congressman Jared Polis of Colorado was in New Jersey last night at an out-of-district event in Hoboken to raise money for NJ-7 repeat challenger Ed Potosnak.
Among the 30-plus attendees were DNC Executive Committee member Babs Casbar Siperstein and Hudson Stonewall Democrats founder Bob Zuckerman.
Polis spoke about the importance of the 7th District and why it's a key to taking back the House in 2012. Of course, we don't know how the 7th will be reconfigured after congressional redistricting, and the possibility New Jersey will be redrawn to force a showdown between a Republican and Democratic incumbent in central Jersey is very real.
At the moment in the current 7th, we're looking at a primary on the Democratic side, with Potosnak, the candidate in 2010 competing for the nomination with Jun Choi, former mayor of Edison.
And there's an interesting wrinkle there. Choi has been telling potential supporters that he was drafted to challenge GOP incumbent Leonard Lance by the DCCC itself. That may be true, certainly. But it is Jared Polis who chairs DCCC's Red to Blue program, which NJ-7 Dem challengers, like Linda Stender, have been chosen for before, and the District is likely to receive that program's boost and attention in 2012.

Want to spend an evening hanging out with Barney Frank?
As we wrote last month, Barney Frank is headlining Ed Potosnak's first fundraiser in his return effort to capture the NJ-7 spot in the House from the GOP's more and more obedient Leonard Lance.
Frank, witty, razor sharp and tough as nails, is one of the best orators in the House. And one of the most important LGBT politicians in the country, at a time when more openly gay leaders are following his lead into elective politics. Potosnak is among them.
Frank will be joining Potosnak this Saturday night for a funder at a private home in Warren, Somerset County. You'll see some fellow Blue Jerseyans there. Tickets are $100, and one lucky sport who orders one between now and one-minute-before-midnight tonight, will win a VIP ticket for the event (couples ordering 2 tix before deadline will be entered to win a pair of tickets to the reception). More details here.

As of Monday night, Congressman Jon Runyan's official web site is pretty clear on his positions on key issues:
On Defense and National Security:
The issues of Defense and National Security are important to our district and to my work in Congress.
On Economy and Jobs:
The issues of Economy and Jobs are important to our district and to my work in Congress.
On Education:
The issue of Education is important to our district and to my work in Congress.
And it goes on and on with similar words for other key issues.
I understand Congressman Runyan has been busy. He's attended several fundraisers during the first week of the congressional session. And he did cast a vote to advance the bill that denies health insurance to millions of Americans. But as a constituent of this neophyte congressman, I'd like to see his official positions on all of the issues. With the web being the primary public view into his positions, is it too much to expect that this part of his web site would be populated from Day One?
Of course, what's happening here is that his staff loaded a standard congressional template with the intent to fill these in at some later time. Maybe someone from his staff monitors Blue Jersey. So if you're out there, how about posting that information? I suspect we will disagree on most issues. But there are probably some that we will agree on. And I'd like to let you know that, too.

Well, only kinda sorta. Actually, the American Red Cross Tri-County Chapter is having it's inaugural Mayor's Jail and Bail today to raise money for local disaster relief. Elected officials and other community leaders have been invited to participate by being "arrested" and having to make "bail" to get out.
Time is running out - these folks are going to the clink if they don't post bail by today. Can you help these jail birds get out?:
Jail Bird Mayors
Colleen Mahr, Mayor of Fanwood
Victor Sordillo, Mayor of Warren
Antonia Ricigliano, Mayor of Edison
Michael Giordano, Mayor of North Plainfield
Jim Kennedy, Mayor of Rahway
Joseph DeIorio, Mayor of Roselle Park
Nancy Malool, Mayor of Scotch Plains
Albert Ellis, Mayor of Watchung
Elected Official Jail Birds:
Derek Armstead, Councilman of Linden
Domenick Bratti, Scotch Plains Councilman
Larissa Chen, Councilwoman of Roselle Park
Angel Estrada, Union County Freeholder
Mary Forbes, Councilwoman of North Plainfield
Everett Merill, Councilman of North Plainfield
Jamel Holley, Councilman of Roselle
Rick Proctor, Union County Freeholder
Douglas Singleterry, Councilman of North Plainfield
Anthony Sytko, Councilman of Garwood
Is it true that sensational headlines capture a reader's attention? The American Red Cross, and these good folks sure hope so. :)

OK, as some of you know I have transitioned myself from "elected official" to "non-profit manager" and currently serve as CEO for the Tri-County Red Cross.
The Red Cross relies entirely on donations -- no government money other than a grant here and there -- to fund it's programs. So far this fiscal year (July-June) we've already assisted a record 105 families who suffered disasters in their homes, trained close to 10,000 people in lifesaving programs such as first aid an CPR, and lots more like our food programs, holiday toy giveaways, blood drives, etc.
Now I'm asking all of you to come to a FREE WINE TASTING (oh, beer and spirits, also!) at the Wine Country in North Plainfield. They'll have more than 100 different bottles for tasting, and all the proceeds from the companies providing the bottles comes to the Tri-County Red Cross.
You can get the information on Facebook and join our Facebook group. Plus I stuck some of it below.
Date: Saturday, May 31, 2008
Time: 1:00pm - 6:00pm
Location: Wine Country of North Plainfield
Street: 967 Route 22W, North Plainfield, NJ
And if you can't come , you can still give us half of your stimulus check (or $5) on the Tri-County Red Cross web site.

It sounds like guests of yesterday's gala event with the President had the red, errr... tin foil carpet rolled out for them. Tucked in the Gloucester County Times article is this little piece of info...Only a handful of legislators attended the event held at the New Jersey Convention and Exposition Center, where attendees drank from plastic cups and were entertained by the Montgomery High School Jazz Band, an award-winning group from Wilson's hometown of Killman. I'm sure the band was fantastic and well worth the show, but plastic cups? Why not just go with styrofoam? I know you don't pay for the food at fundraisers, but i might be a little insulted being given the plastic for a $300 event.
So lets recap: many were afraid to acknowledge publicly they were attending, only a handful of legislators actually did attend, those who came had to drink out of plastic cups and the media were forced to move their TV trucks because the owner of the property didn't want to acknowledge he was holding the event. So with all this wondeful information, what did the NY Times have to say? The most prominent New Jersey Republican officials on hand were the party's top leaders in the Legislature: Leonard Lance, Senate minority leader, and Alex DeCroce, Assembly minority leader.
The event also played out without a hitch, in contrast to what happened last year when Vice President Dick Cheney traveled to Newark for a fund-raiser on behalf of Mr. Kean, the Senate candidate.
Mr. Kean was tardy after taking the usually traffic-clogged Route 1 from Trenton rather than the speedier New Jersey Turnpike. That generated speculation that while Mr. Kean wanted the money that was raised ($400,000), he did not want to be photographed with the vice president. Wow, has the bar been lowered so much that as long as you don't give a pathetic excuse, the event went off without a hitch? Yeah, sounds like a huge success to me.Update: While i've had alot of fun railing on this event for the past few weeks and the plastic cups may not be a huge issue, I think the fact that they only raised $700,000 having the President of the United States in town is very telling. Compare that number with the fact that in Dec. 2003, the Star Ledger reported on Dec 2. that Bush took $1 M for his campaign at an event in Morris County. In July 2001, The Bergen Record on July 31 reported that Vice President Cheney raised $3.5 million for Gubernatorial Candidate Bret Schundler. In fact, in 1999, Bush earned $800,000 for the assembly republicans alone, not even the State Party.

(This will be a great event with a great Congressman. Barney Frank recently turned over 30% of his remaining campaign funds to the DCCC so they can help candidates like Linda Stender. - promoted by jmelli)
Hosted by Garden State Equality and New Jersey Stonewall Democrats!
Join Congressman Barney Frank for cocktails and insightful political conversation. Barney Frank is the founder of National Stonewall Democrats.
Save the date Wednesday evening, October 25, 6 -8 PM
In Edison at the home of Barbra Casbar, 4 Sandia Court,

With special thanks to Jim Ringwood of NJSD and GSE; Steven Goldstein, GSE Chair; and Heather DeJong of the Stender campaign for helping to make this event possible.
The latest polls show that control of the United States House of Representatives is at stake. The race is a virtual dead heat and Linda Stender can win this with our help! Send a message to Bush and Cheney!
Linda's opponent, Congressman Mike Ferguson, is an anti-choice, anti-LGBTI, anti senior, pro-war, pro-Bush, radical Republican extremist completely out of step with New Jersey. Let us "Dump Mike!"

Yesterday's fundraiser for Congressional candidate Rich Sexton went really well. The weather was picture perfect, the food was fantastic and the company was pretty darn good too. Oh, and by the way, we also raised some cash for the campaign. At last count, we were just shy of $1,5oo.
This year in NJ-3, we're up against a well-financed incumbent who shamelessly accepts big-ticket donations from the likes of Tom Delay and Jack Abramoff. So the Sexton campaign relies on events like yesterday's BBQ as its life blood.
Yesterday had some real intangible effects, as well. By helping Dems stretch the field in districts with entrenched GOP incumbents, we're helping with DNC chairman Howard Dean's mission to take the fight to the GOP in every district of every state in the country.

I am in organizing mode for the BBQ we're having at my place here in Cherry Hill this weekend for Rich Sexton's campaign. I am posting this just as a gentle reminder to everyone that I'll be firing up the grill this Sunday, June 11th at 2pm. Here is a link with more info.
Since I am hosting this thing personally I would love to see as many BlueJersey folks as possible. There will be all manner of South Jersey political types at the party and we'll be having fun and raising some cash for Rich Sexton. For those of you who are too far to make it, you can still contribute to this important fight. No contribution is too modest.
Directions below the fold.

Demonstrating once again how out of touch and incompetent the Kean Jr campaign is, they're bringing in Laura Bush next week for a fundraiser/press event. Will Junior get "lost" again visiting some country clubs on the way to the reception? It looks like this time they're more prepared.
I couldn't make this up if I tried. From his invitation: Please plan to arrive early due to heavy traffic. Seriously now. How many people had to approve this before it went out? Is it really possible that not one person along the chain of command thought to take that line out?
Since traffic might be heavy, we suggest loading up your ipod for the road with some good tunes such as Beep Beep (the Tom Kean Jr song).

As many of you know, Dick Cheney is helping Tom Kean Jr. shoot people in the face raise money today.
This prompted Assemblyman Reed Guscoria to call for stronger drunk hunting laws. The hilarious press release complete with Elmer Fudd comparisons follows the break in full glory.
