John Kerry Slams Right Wing Group Attacks on Linda Greenstein

by: Juan Melli

Fri Nov 02, 2007 at 11:47:48 AM EDT

Senator John Kerry today weighed in on the controversy surrounding the anti-gay, right wing front group Common Sense America that's spent hundreds of thousands of dollars in the 14th district - one of three clean elections districts (press release):
"The smear and fear tactics of this Republican front group are no match for a public servant who stands on principle and voters who reject the backroom deals and underground attacks that seek to distort and divide at all costs," said Sen. Kerry.  "These right-wing front groups are becoming more and more brazen in their efforts to infiltrate elections on any level, but Americans are increasingly tired of Republican fat cats who think their big money can steal elections."

Senator Kerry said that it is important to speak out against this group and their extraordinary spending that spread lies and distortions against a respected community leader like Assemblywoman Linda Greenstein (D-Plainsboro).

"The fact that the right wing is willing to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars against someone like Assemblywoman Greenstein shows how desperate they are to stop their Party's bleeding and get back in the business of promoting an out of the mainstream agenda," said Kerry.  "I applaud Linda for standing up to this group and fighting for the preservation of the Clean Elections Program which is clearly a bold step in protecting the integrity of elections."

How Common Sense America Swung My Vote

by: Jersey Boy

Thu Nov 01, 2007 at 12:29:52 AM EDT

Last month, I published a diary expressing my support for Bill Baroni in the 14th District due to his clear and unequivocal support for immediate ethics reform in the face of a stubborn, slow-moving Democratic majority

But this was before "Common Sense America" happened to the 14th District. And tonight, Loretta Weinberg's comments really got me thinking.

If Common Sense America were true to its word and its true to its agenda, it would be targeting me and my outspoken record of gay tolerance. But they won't and the reason is because they get their marching orders from the Republican Party.
As much as I want to see some Republicans go to Trenton to keep the bad Democrats out and the good Democrats honest, I cannot vote that way this year. And it's all because of Common Sense America.

I cannot in good conscience vote for Bill Baroni, Adam Bushman, Tom Goodwin or any of the 14th district Republicans knowing that Common Sense America will use their victory to claim credit for their "values." It would be much better to have to shame the Democratic majority in Trenton than to have Republicans beholden to the naked emperor that is Common Sense America -- no matter how much they profess not to be.

It's a dilemma for sure. Tom Moran wrote recently that New Jersey is faced with the unfortunate choice of putting the state in worse financial disrepair or handing a victory to those who are anti-stem cell and anti-open space. It's sort of the same choice we face in the 14th.

Seema Singh has been questioned on her ethics, been derided as an inept campaigner, and repeatedly criticized for her comparisons of Baroni to George W. Bush. The first two points are valid. The third, well ...

The unions have come out swinging for Baroni at every opportunity. But I recently had a discussion with one typically nonpartisan, politically ambivalent union member whose local endorsed Baroni over Singh. She told me that when she received a call from her union reminding her to vote Baroni, she told them they should be ashamed of themselves. That sometimes you must look beyond your own pocketbook. That Baroni continues to support this President and an endless war in Iraq and that there are more important things than a going the right way on a few union votes.

Which touches on Singh's current (albeit too late) campaign theme of 'Baroni: Bush Lite,' and the broader point of my protest vote against this group that tacitly supports Baroni. Sure, people like Bill Baroni and he votes favorably on certain issues. But some things are more important, like, say, Iraq to that particular union member.

And so it is with me and Common Sense America. Beating them is more important to me right now than beating a Democratic majority that is too slow on ethics reform. And so I will vote for Singh, Greenstein and DeAngelo this Tuesday.

Weinberg to Anti-Gay Group: Bring it on

by: Juan Melli

Wed Oct 31, 2007 at 05:01:09 PM EDT

Common Sense America Betrayed BillboardCommon Sense America, an anti-gay organization based in Princeton, has been spending hundreds of thousands of dollars targeting Linda Greenstein in the 14th and Jeff Van Drew in 1st legislative districts. The group is run by Brian Brown, who also chairs the National Organization for Marriage, Marriage PAC NJ, and until recently the Connecticut wing of James Dobson's extremist Focus on the Family organization. Just weeks ago he ran a billboard comparing a pro-equality Massachusetts legislator to Judas and Benedict Arnold.

Today, Senator Loretta Weinberg - a leader in New Jersey in the fight for equality for all - asked why Mr Brown was ignoring the 37th district incumbents:

"Why does Common Sense America only spend money in the 14th District and why does it only victimize Linda Greenstein? If Common Sense America were true to its word and its true to its agenda, it would be targeting me and my outspoken record of gay tolerance.  But they won't and the reason is because they get their marching orders from the Republican Party." ...

"The fact that Common Sense America's activities fold nicely into the overall Republican objective and the fact that the group is not working to unseat me or other gay rights proponents shows that this is a Republican-conceived strategy - nothing more and nothing less."
