Can somebody explain the rules of journalism to me, so that the important part of the fact that there are two women besides Linda Stender running for congress from NJ this year, is not who they are, but their chances? AP article in the Washington Post and Forbes:
Two other women are running for House seats this year in New Jersey but only Stender is thought by her party to have a good chance of defeating an incumbent.
Beginning and the end of the discussion of Carol Gay and Viola Thomas-Hughes.
And when Carol got coverage in the Ocean County Observer after a local boy was killed in Iraq shortly after arriving there, they do not describe her as a candidate:
"It's another young life that's lost," said Carol Gay of Brick. "This war has been far too costly in young lives and there is nothing to show for it."

Happy Monday everyone and welcome to a (mostly) election day themed news roundup today, September 25, 2006. There's a whole lot going on this week, so let's get right to it!
The lastest poll suggests that the hotly contested NJ Senate race is (still) a dead heat. This poll makes one thing clear: the indepentent voter will decide the day. On the one hand we have Senator Bob Menendez, who's running on his record and a better future in America than what we've seen the past six years. On the other hand, there is Tom Kean Junior who's running on his daddy's name.
Speaking of names (and irony) there's this gem in the Philly Inquirer. The GOP is pissing and moaning about the Sexton/Saxton election in NJ's 3rd congressional district. Can you believe the party that's putting Daddy's Boy Kean Junior at the top of the ticket is shilling the notion that the dems are trying to confuse voters in NJ-3 with the name similarity? Are you kidding me? Given the fact that Jim Saxton has voted with the Bush Administration nearly 90% of the time, “I should be the one worrying about who's confusing who,” Sexton quipped at yesterday's Moorestown rally.
Women running for office in the Garden State have a harder time getting elected to public office than their male counterparts. The lastest issue of Forbes examines this phenomenon in some detail.
"You don't play golf or drink beer with a woman," said former Gov. Christie Whitman. "You tend to gravitate toward people who look like you."
The ex-Gov. has a good point, but there's more to the story than that. So consider the job facing candidates like Linda Stender, Carol Gay and Viola Thomas Hughes: not only do they have to do battle with entrenched incumbents, but they're also working against history. In our state's history, only five women have ever gone to Congress. Additionally NJ has never elected a female Senator. Sad but true.
Governor Corzine is getting better feedback from NJ residents. Aparently, the state doesn't see a whole lot getting done (yet) but seem pleased that the Governor is trying, which is more than we can say about his predecessors (McGreevy, Whitman, et al.) who were long on smoke and mirrors and short on results. The poll results are a "reaction to a strong leader," Seton Hall polysci Prof. Joseph Marbach said. "You can disagree with the policies of a leader, but if someone acts decisively, you respect that." I know I sure do.
It's deja vu all over again for Wayne Bryant. The Turd of Trenton is a wart on the face of Camden County and he should be in jail. The Trentonian is a bit more succinct: Actually, Bryant is more disgusting than a pig..... more of a Jabba the Hut of Star Wars fame--a creepy, slimy corrupt slug. Sen. Wayne Bryant is a slug in the New Jersey political landscape and somebody needs to pour some salt on this guy. No argument here. If we don't stand up to guys like Wayne Bryant, then we don't deserve to hold onto our majority in Trenton. If Senate President Dick Codey won't take Byrant to task then surely the voters will. (Note to Sen Codey: NJ voters respond well to "cleaning house" and Gov. Corzine's actions with Zulima Farber underscore this notion!!)
Finally, we look at the needle exchange compromise in Trenton. Times: That New Jersey, which we here like to think of as enlightened and progressive, trails the rest of the country in this initiative is shocking -- and has led to statistics that are as sad as they are predictable. We have the fifth highest number of adult HIV cases in the nation. Forty-five percent of our AIDS virus caseload comes from shared drug syringes, compared with about 20 percent in other states. The nay sayers need to get off their high horse, suspend their judgements surrounding AIDS and addiction and enact needle exchange in this state so that more people don't have to die.

In what we hope will foreshadow wins for women in November, two women's team won at bowling yesterday at the Dems 2000 event. Linda Stender's and Carol Gay's teams came in 1st and 2nd.
Someone pointed out that the New York Times election guide has the wrong candidate listed as the Dem candidate in the 4th district! Bennet from the team wrote a blistering letter to the Times, and anyone who wants to help them get their election guide up to date, please write and tell them Carol Gay is the candidate in the 4th.

Carol Gay, the Democratic candidate running against Chris Smith in CD4, was a big hit wherever she went at the Democratic State Conference--no surprise for those who know her!
She was enthusiastically acknowledged from the podium and vigorously applauded by the crowd every time the Congressional candidates running against incumbent Repugs were recognized. Phone banks are going, coordinated with the Menendez campaign--contact Carol's website (www.carolgayforcongress@yahoo.com) to volunteer.
Carol was great at the Progressive Caucus and at the LGBTI caucus and picked up lots of support; she went to the Women's Caucus, and probably got great support there too--after all, Smith is one of the most ardent anti-choice members of Congress. Garden State Equality threatens to do a "Gays for Gay" event--I can't wait!
Carol is amazing! Everywhere she went she impressed people--she is really the energizer bunny, and I think that even if she doesn't win, she will probably do better against Chris Smith than any previous candidate.
Attention bowlers: There's a special event on Saturday--Bowl-A-Thon with Democrats 2000. TEAM CAROL GAY FOR CONGRESS needs volunteers to join the team. If you are available and interested in bowling on Team Carol Gay for Congress, please respond to carolgayforcongress@yahoo.com.
Event Details: Saturday, September 16, 5:30pm,
Mid State Lanes, Route 18 N, East Brunswick.
Special Guest : SENATOR BOB MENENDEZ
And some day soon she'll be on the Colbert Report--watch for the announcement!

CONFIDENTIAL MEMO
To: Carol Gay
From: Sister to Sister
Re: Mr. Smith needs to come home from Washington & You can do it!
Date: Labor Day
Carol, the rest of those ladies and gentlemen who ran against Chris Smith (R-NJ4) were pansies! They actually thought they could run on the "issues" and win. Ha. They tried to run positive, issue orientated campaigns and appeal to voters on a grass roots level. After all, who couldn't beat a 20+ year incumbent with little accomplished and no Chairmanship to show for? Unfortunately, Smith just sits back in his plush arm chair by the fireplace; snug in his Virginia home, resting his feet comfortably on an ottoman with an embroidered American eagle personally designed by Nancy Reagan.
Smith knows the opposition can drive back and forth on I-195 all day, seven days a week until Election Day, and not get through to anybody beyond the highway exits ... the district is inpenetrable. With four counties, five major daily newspapers, gated Senior communities that don't let pesky politicians in, multiple cable systems, and competing NY / Philly networks, -- You'd need a million dollars to get above 15% in a voter recognition survey! Also, no need to contact the brain trust at the DCCC, who achieved an Enron monopoly on losing campaign strategies and support. They won't invest a nickel's worth in the 4th District race. Their consultants are $o needy, they can only blow their load in a few places and only where the con$ultant$ tell them. No, Smith could put his feet up sipping lemonade drinks with his friend, Jerry Falwell, because all he needs is his trusty pen to sign away the "franking privilege" on all his letters. This allows him to mail to his constituents for free all his campaign literature disguised as "official" duties.

(That's two for South Jersey in one night. Come on North Jersey - you gonna let South Jersey kick your butt like this? - promoted by jmelli)
Until we have a Burlington County Blue Journalist, I figured I would do a little summary of what's going on. Here is a map of the municipalities in Burlington County which goes from south of Trenton, to the Delaware River, to Exit 4 on the Turnpike and then down to the border of Ocean & Atlantic Counties.

UPDATE II: We are now at $3,945.27 $3,980.27, less than $55 $20 short of $4,000. Come on, folks! All we need are two is one $27.50 $19.73 contributions to Tom Wyka and we have met the $4,000 and 10 contributor goals! Or 11 4 $5 contributors. Or 5 2 $11 contributors. There are really quite a few options.
UPDATE: Thanks, folks! We're now only three contributions to Tom Wyka from getting our 10 contributions for all the candidates. Your work today put Paul Aronsohn and Rich Sexton over the mark. Keep it up! Labor Day is just three days away, and that means the campaign season starts in earnest! Our Blue Jersey Challengers are gearing up with radio, tv and print ads; voter registration projects; polls and surveys; voter contact; and more, more, more!
And that takes money. Your money. My money. Jon Corzine's money. All of it pooled together to crate a huge lake of campaign resources to help us all kick ass!
All we're asking is $5 from Blue Jersey folks so we can get to 10 contributors for each campaign. Or $50. Or $500. Seriously, it adds up -- Blue Jersey has already raised $3,800.00.
You can give to a specific candidate of your choice, or use this form to have your contribution split amongst them all:
Here's where we stand today:
Recipient | Donors | | Linda Stender | 31 | | Carol Gay | 18 | | Richard Sexton | 11 | | Paul Aronsohn | 10 | | Tom Wyka | 9 |

A packed house filled the Reformed Church in Highland Park last night to hear from Congressional Candidate Carol Gay, former soldier Gregory Bumgardner, and military author Richard Moser talking about Iraq.
The event was sponsored by New Jersey for Democracy, Middlesex County DFA, and two allies from the peace movement, Central Jersey Coalition Against Endless War, and Rutgers Against the War.
The Forum was featured in the Star Ledger, reminding readers throughout New Jersey concerned about Iraq that they are not alone. As Sharon Adarlo of the Ledger writes: One of the most compelling discussions on the Iraq war involved the mind-numbing statistics Gay recited on the casualties and injuries in the civilian and military populations.
"We have gained nothing from this," Gay said grimly. That dissatisfaction over the situation in Iraq exists in every town, in every part New Jersey - and people are demanding solutions.
This was the fourth in a series of Iraq War Forums sponsored by New Jersey for Democracy - together with local DFA groups and allies - aimed at engaging the community about the most important issue for voters this year: Iraq. The series is receiving a terrific response. Earlier, nearly 75 people attended a Forum on Iraq on a rainy Thursday evening in Clifton. Two days later, over 200 people turned out for a similar forum on a gorgeous Saturday morning in Morristown, and another 100 came out in Edgewater.
More on those 3 events - plus photos - on the flip. All cross-posted at NJforDemocracy.org

UPDATE IV: Stuart Rothenberg is now predicting a Democratic takeover of the House. He says:Our latest race-by-race review of Congressional districts around the country convinces us that a Democratic wave is building and that the party is poised to take control of the House of Representatives in the fall. The only question now is the size of the November wave. Let's help grow that wave. We need just 1 more donor for Paul Aronsohn, 1 for Rich Sexton and 4 for Tom Wyka.
UPDATE III: Blue Jerseyans have raised $3,785.27 -- that's almost four grand to take on incumbent right wingers this year. Come on, let's get that extra $214.73 to make it an even $4K! With the election less than three months away, now is the time to support
your favorite candidates and make sure they have the resources needed to compete
during the home stretch. Everyone can help out. If you can afford it, use
our ActBlue page to give your
favorite candidate or two $5. Or $25, $50 or any other amount up to
$2,100, if you want.
We're looking to get each House candidate 10 contributors from Blue Jersey, so
please help out with just a donation or two. When we all combine our efforts,
it'll pay off for the candidates and show what Blue Jerseyans can do! Update: We're a little closer to 10 for everyone. Come on, folks. Join in the fun!Update II -- A couple more folks joined in. Let's get to 10 today for everyone and set a new goal next week!

We are starting to work in one of the bluest of the blue counties, Middlesex, to get the number of women in elected office to 30%, up from the current 19%, in three years. Our campaign is called Thirty in Three.
We are still in the process of working on what women voters and what county committee people and municipal/county chairs can do. Besides the good suggestions of running for office and committee seats as well as advocating for open primaries (from Dana Wefer's OpEd), I would add, writing letters to the editor, pressuring the county committee to recruit, train and support women candidates.
In a meeting with our 'acting' county chair at the early stages of our campaign, he acknowledged that women and minorities are electing democrats in NJ. As Dana implied, the thinking has to change on getting better representation in the party itself. A quote I like is:
"Women have the right as citizens to equal representation. As expressed at the Beijing 'Platform for Action' of 1995, a second concept of equality, beyond 'equal opportunity,' is gaining increasing relevance and support: the notion of "equality of result". The argument is that real equal opportunity does not exist just because formal barriers are removed.
Adapted from International IDEA [Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance]
In the Middlesex/Mercer/Monmouth area, we are also supporting 2 great women candidates for the US House this year, which I'm sure everyone reading these posts knows about: in the 4th, Carol Gay and in the 7th, Linda Stender. We were out canvassing today.
Please join us to get a woman into the House from NJ and to make Nancy Pelosi leader of the House!

In yesterday's U.S. House vote to try to ban marriage for gay couples in the U.S. Constitution, Congress members Mike Ferguson, Scott Garrett, Frank LoBiondo and Jim Saxton voted "yes" for the ban. To his credit, Rodney Frelinghuysen voted "no," the lone Republican in the NJ Congressional delegation to vote "no." All the Democrats in the delegation correctly voted "no." The measure failed in the full House, whose vote was symbolic this session anyway, given that the U.S. Senate voted the measure down a few weeks ago.

Gov. Mark Warner's PAC, Forward Together is giving a $5,ooo campaign contribution to the top-5 vote-getters on his PAC's website which noted the following: The 2006 elections will be an opportunity for Democrats. For the first time in many years, Democrats have a strong chance to win majorities in both houses of Congress. Forward Together PAC has already contributed to more than 50 campaigns in more than 30 states. Now we are opening up the process.
You can help us choose the next group of candidates we'll support. We are looking for fresh faces with fresh ideas - and for solutions-oriented Democrats with a focus on the future - candidates who will help us change the political map. Which candidates are you supporting?
Our very own Carol Gay is a good bet to score the prize as she easily moved into the second round of voting today! But she can use our help getting the 5K. Can Blue Jersey readers please show Carol some love and ensure Carol gets the cash?
A vote for NJ-4 is a vote for the hometeam. And likewise a win in NJ-4 would be huge for the state and the nation. So go vote for Carol now! (Please!)
Incidently, the candiate who turns out he most votes overall gets a fundraiser hosted by Governor Warner himself. Presumably that would make 5,ooo bucks look like chump change.

Carol Gay is the Democratic Candidate for Congress in New Jersey’s 4th District, running against the Republican incumbent Chris Smith. If you are reading this, you probably already know Carol from her lifetime of activism on behalf of Peace and Justice. Among other things, Carol is a retired International Representative of the Communications Workers of America, the Executive Vice President of the New Jersey Industrial Union Council, a leader of US Labor Against War and a founding member of the Solidarity Singers.
Electing Carol to Congress will immeasurably improve the prospects of the causes and the principals that we all share and that Carol has always fought for. But the only way that can happen is if we all help.

Gov. Warner's Forward Together PAC is running a contest to give $5K to 10 candidates, and he will do a fundraiser for the winner. You have to sign up on the website to vote but can decline emails. The first round is through June 18th. I heard about it through Carol Gay, and I gave her my vote. She's a great candidate who could use the cash. Other challengers from around the state are on the list, too. The candidates are divided into East and West, and I have to say I favor McNerney from CA-11, since Pombo is the creep that is trying to undo the endangered species act, but Nick Lampson in Delay's district has to be a favorite too. If anyone knows about non-NJ candidates, I'd be interested.

Wearing a bright yellow button saying UNION YES - WAR NO, Carol Gay stepped to the podium at a Candidate Forum in Beechwood last night to make her first speech as a candidate for United States Congress. Gulp.
Yeah, well. You might have a bemused look on your face too if you just found out you were running for Congress 8 hours ago. She handled herself just fine.
Gay is challenging the mighty Chris Smith in the 4th CD, who's been there so long he's got his name scratched into the door (I jest of course, he was sworn in in 1981 at just 27). The 4th spans Burlington, Mercer, Monmouth, and Ocean counties.
