Atlantic City Mayor Resigns (Updated)

by: Juan Melli

Wed Oct 10, 2007 at 09:37:30 AM EDT

Update: From ABC 6:
The embattled mayor of Atlantic City, Bob Levy, has resigned his office effective today.

Action News learned of the resignation this morning in a statement from Levy's attorney, Ed Jacobs.

In the statement, Jacob said the circumstances surrounding Levy's decision to resign included multiple health problems that were precipitated by a pending investigation by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Josh Margolin at the Star Ledger reports that Bob Levy's long-rumored resignation may happen today:

Atlantic City Mayor Robert Levy plans to resign as early as today amid a federal investigation into allegations he profited from embellishing his military service record, according to two people who have been briefed on his plans.

Corzine Practically Calls for Levy to Step Down

by: Juan Melli

Tue Oct 09, 2007 at 04:22:28 PM EDT

Philadelphia Inquirer:
New Jersey Gov. Corzine had harsh words for Atlantic City's mayor today and all but called for his resignation.

"I think it's time to clean up the situation," Corzine told from reporters toward the end of an unrelated news conference at the Statehouse. "It needs to be brought to a conclusion." [...]

Asked squarely if he believed Levy should resign, Corzine said: "If the mayor isn't fulfilling his obligations, isn't living up to his oath of office, I think that's probably the appropriate step."

Insiders continue to speculate that Levy's resignation is not a matter of if, but when.

Thanks, Mayor Levy

Missing Atlantic City mayor Bob Levy has made the city a national and international laughing stock (contrary to Senator McCullough's absurd suggestion that this is the fault of Assemblyman Whelan). Here's a very small sampling of recent headlines:

Bonus Quote of the Day

by: Jason Springer

Mon Oct 08, 2007 at 05:55:00 PM EDT

Today's bonus quote comes from State Senator Sonny McCullough who seems to be single handedly trying to make any communications staff from the Whelan Campaign more and more unnecessary with each passing day.  Today's gem comes in response to his opponent, Jim Whelan calling for the Mayor of Atlantic City, who is still AWOL to resign.
"I have not heard any outrage," McCullough said. "In Atlantic City we have seen mayors go to jail, get indicted. It's an unfortunate thing, but we've lived with this stuff before.

"The only thing I hear is 'how could Whelan do this to his best buddy?'" he said. "That's what the locals are talking about."

So Sonny is the kind of legislator who says screw the people, I will stick by my corrupt friend.  And his nonchalant comment about Atlantic City Mayors going to jail, well that's like driving by an accident and having the officer tell you to pay no attention to what you see, there's nothing going on there.  In what world is it NOT something to take notice of if a Mayor disappears without a trace?  Oh and his opponent, Jim Whelan:  yeah, he was one of those boring Mayor's who just ran the city and didn't get indicted.  Sonny must not like that.

Has Mayor Levy Abandoned His Office?

by: Juan Melli

Fri Oct 05, 2007 at 04:28:32 PM EDT

The Star Ledger has the news:
Gov. Jon Corzine said this afternoon he is asking Attorney General Anne Milgram to issue an opinion about whether Atlantic City Mayor Bob Levy has "abandoned his office."

Levy hasn't been seen since last Wednesday and the city's unelected business administrator - Domenic Cappella - has been running the city.

Except for an unacceptably vague statement last week, Levy won't say where exactly he is, why he's there or for how long he'll be gone. Clearly, he's abandoned his office.

AC Councilman Calls on Levy to Resign

by: Juan Melli

Mon Oct 01, 2007 at 03:59:01 PM EDT

Following up on rumors last week that Atlantic City mayor Bob Levy may resign, the Atlantic City council is now calling for his resignation:
City Council members believe Mayor Bob Levy's disappearance without a formal transfer of power means he has abandoned his post and Council President William Marsh should now be Atlantic City's mayor.

But the group did not take action Tuesday (sic). Instead, members at a hastily called press conference Monday afternoon have reached out for guidance from New Jersey Gov. Jon S. Corzine's office.

It hoped its questions are answered in 48 hours.

In the meantime, Councilman Dennis Mason, an opponent, called for Levy's resignation. Mason said, "Enough is enough. We've been here almost two years with this nonsense."

And this response from Bob Levy's wife about her husband's whereabouts is simply bizarre:
Levy was last seen in City Hall on Wednesday, where he signed seven ordinances.

The following day, his attorney Edwin J. Jacobs said Levy was hospitalized, while rumors swirled of a pending resignation tied to an ongoing federal investigation into his military records.

Levy, in an undisclosed hospital for unspecified treatments, has not been seen in public for days. [...]

His wife Hazel, also a city employee, indicated she knew where her husband was. But asked his location, she told a reporter, "Why should I tell you?"

Rumors on the Internets

by: Juan Melli

Thu Sep 27, 2007 at 11:02:51 AM EDT

( - promoted by Juan Melli)

Update 2: From the Press of AC:
Assemblyman Jim Whelan called on Atlantic City Mayor Bob Levy Thursday to address rumors he is under federal investigation and to resign if he did anything wrong.

"We keep hearing a steady stream of rumors and I think the last year has taught us we can't discount them," Whelan said in a phone interview. "I think he owes it to the community to tell us what he's done. Only he knows what he's done and if he's done something wrong, he needs to resign."

Update: There is a press conference scheduled for 1pm at city hall that didn't materialize.

This is unconfirmed, so take it with a grain of salt. In the midst of a frenzied mayoral recall effort and a swirling rumor mill, we hear from sources in Atlantic County that Atlantic City Mayor Bob Levy may resign before the day is out. Speculation on who may replace him in the ensuing power struggle has centered on several councilmen who have been jockeying for power since the recall effort began.
