Blue Jersey Radio LIVE Tonight at 8:00 p.m.

by: Jeff Gardner

Tue Jul 06, 2010 at 03:00:00 PM EDT

Each week, Blue Jersey Radio streams LIVE with New Jersey's latest political buzz, interviews with newsmakers, and your stimulating calls.

This Week: America turns 234, and still looks good for her age (though I might recommend a little nip and tuck to keep things fresh). New Jersey, by contrast, is showing her age, with rising local needs, shrinking revenues and serious infrastructure and other needs. Solution? An arbitrary tax cap! Problem solved! (Ladies, get your healthcare, um, somewhere else. Oh, and avoid bridges if at all possible.)

But, it's not all bad - you still have us. So, join us for New Jersey's fastest half-hour of political talk. We'll see if we can keep up with the change-by-the-minute pace of news coming out of Trenton and elsewhere in the state.

Join us tonight!

Something special on your mind? Leave your thoughts in the comments, and maybe we can have some fun with them on air. Or, feel free to give us a call tonight, and share what's on your mind. Remember, it's all LIVE, so don't be afraid - join us!

That number again is: 646-652-2773.

Talk to you then!

Michele Jaker
Women's Health Matters NJ's Michele Jaker
Jeff will be off helping organize Democrats in Hawthorne tonight, so JRB will be my able co-host once again this week. We always love the take he brings to the show and tonight should be no different.

In addition to my co-host, we'll be joined by Michele Jaker with Womens Health Matters NJ to talk about the cuts to family planning in the final budget, the fact that there is zero funding for women's health and what happens next.

In addition to our guest, we'll talk about the budget compromise itself, what restorations helped save programs from the chopping block and what programs are still facing the axe. In addition, we'll look at the fact that everyone is jumping on the cap bandwagon and what it all means. And it's all LIVE tonight at 8:00 p.m.

Blue Jersey Radio LIVE Tonight at 8:00 p.m.

by: Jeff Gardner

Tue May 25, 2010 at 03:00:00 PM EDT

Each week, Blue Jersey Radio streams LIVE with New Jersey's latest political buzz, interviews with newsmakers, and your stimulating calls.

This Week: It will be hard to follow up on last week's very nice interview with Deborah Howlett, but we'll do our best. Like most of the country, we've got primaries on our minds after last week's stunning outcomes by Joe Sestak and Bill Halter. Are there any primary upsets brewing here in New Jersey? We'll be finding out very soon, and tonight we'll be talking about some of the more notable ones. (Um, like this one.)

Plus - as a government shutdown is taken off the table faster than you can say "Hey, Jeff predicted that almost 2 months ago!" - we'll recap the latest in the Trenton budget wars.

Join us tonight!

Something special on your mind? Leave your thoughts in the comments, and maybe we can have some fun with them on air. Or, feel free to give us a call tonight, and share what's on your mind. Remember, it's all LIVE, so don't be afraid - join us!

Blue Jersey Radio LIVE Tonight at 8:00 with Deborah Howlett of NJ Policy Perspectiive

by: Jason Springer

Wed May 19, 2010 at 02:30:00 PM EDT

Jeff Gardner makes his triumphant return to Blue Jersey Radio this week. Thanks to JRB, who admirably kept his seat warm as my co-host for the last two weeks, but something tells me now that Jeff has returned, he will have alot to say.

Not only is Jeff back, but we have a special guest in Deb Howlett, the newly named Executive Director for New Jersey Policy Perspective. Rosi gave us a little more information about her in the post announcing her new role:

Deborah was Director of Communications for Gov. Corzine, and was a player in his administration's efforts to pass Marriage Equality. She comes from the world of writing, and reporting, as an award-winning political reporter for the Star Ledger, and before that several roles at USA Today. And was nominated for a Pulitizer Prize in 1996.
We're looking forward to the conversation with Deb. It's all LIVE tonight at 8:00 p.m. Have questions or comments of your own, drop 'em in the comments, then tune in and join the conversation! And, of course - you can always give us a call and have your say. That number again is: 646-652-2773.

Why Trenton Democrats are conservative about the state Supreme Court

by: JRB

Thu May 13, 2010 at 11:50:26 AM EDT

Promoted by Jason Springer

The other night on Blue Jersey Radio, Jason floated an idea: that Trenton Republicans would use Elena Kagan's nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court to argue for speedy consideration of Gov. Chris Christie's nomination to the New Jersey Supreme Court. To recap, Christie became the first governor to stop a sitting justice from receiving tenure, opting to pick a big campaign donor instead. Democrats in the legislature were so outraged, they've decided not even to hold hearings on the nomination.

Now, Jason said the GOP argument would be that if a Democrat in Washington can pick whomever he wants for the court, why can't Christie? Cue this morning's Republican press release: "US Republicans Pledge to Give President Obama's Supreme Court Nomination a Fair Hearing... While New Jersey Democratic Legislators Plan to Block Governor Christie's Supreme Court Nominee." It juxtaposes cherry-picked quotes from Mitch McConnell and Steve Sweeney, John Boehner and Joe Cryan... you get the picture.

The Jersey GOP's argument is irrelevant for so many reasons, it barely deserves addressing. Democrats in Trenton have worked across the aisle with their new Republican governor this year in a way that Republicans in Washington wouldn't even consider with their new Democratic president last year, let alone this one.

But a single reason stands above all others, and deserves to be stated. What this controversy comes down to is Gov. Christie revoking a precedent carried out by the likes of Governors Brendan Byrne, Tom Kean, Christine Whitman and more. The Democrats are actually playing the part of the conservatives by trying to preserve the bipartisan traditions that have kept the Supreme Court from rampant politicization.

If New Jersey Republicans truly want to do something for bipartisanship in our government, the best thing they can do is to join the Democrats and block Gov. Christie on his partisan powergrab. That would be the way to ensure a modicum of cooperation between the two parties can continue long into the future.

Blue Jersey Radio LIVE Tonight at 8:00 p.m. with special co-host Jack Bohrer

by: Jason Springer

Tue May 04, 2010 at 02:00:00 PM EDT

Let me just say how excited I am for Blue Jersey radio this week.  Jeff and Adam will be upset they're not able to join us because my co-host will be JRB, John Bohrer. I wouldn't be surprised if they try to call in when they find out.

If you're not familiar with JRB, besides his work here at Blue Jersey, he's currently writing a book about Senator Robert Kennedy and his young aides. His work has appeared in Politico, Salon, The Jersey City Independent, The Aquarian Weekly and USA Today. And tonight, he's joining us for Blue Jersey radio and boy do we have some serious stuff to talk about.

In the latest example of elections have consequences, the Governor took the plunge into the Supreme Court pool yesterday choosing not to reappoint Justice Wallace. We'll break down what happened, what it means and what comes next.

The Budget hearings continue to shed light on the consequences of Christie's proposals. And we still have 5000 barrels a day of oil leaking into the ocean and our members of Congress have been vocal about what it all should mean.

JRB also has some thoughts on the Newark Election next week and the Menendez recall situation. Who knows what else we will get into.

It's all LIVE tonight at 8:00 p.m.

Have questions or comments of your own, drop 'em in the comments, then tune in and join the conversation! And, of course - you can always give us a call and have your say. That number again is: 646-652-2773.

This week: We're joined by NJ-3 Congressional Candidate Barry Bendar seeking the democratic nomination in New Jersey's 3rd District.

What? We already have a democratic congressman in NJ-3 you say? You betcha! But, since the incumbent couldn't see Healthcare Reform from his house, someone else wants to give it a try. Looks like we have an actual contested primary - in America no less. You don't see that every day.

So, what exactly does Barry have in mind in challenging an incumbent Congressman?

by: Jason Springer

Tue Feb 23, 2010 at 03:15:00 PM EST

Each week, Blue Jersey Radio streams LIVE with New Jersey's latest political buzz, interviews with newsmakers, and your stimulating calls.

For the last two weeks, we have had great guests including Congressman Donald Payne two weeks ago and JRB last week talking corruption. Those shows are worth a listen.

This week, I'm sure we'll cover many of the issues facing our state. Last Friday was a huge news day with Senator Baroni saying he would be moving to the NY/NJ Port Authority and Senator Lautenberg being diagnosed with treatable stomach cancer. The Senate unanimously approved Pension reform bills yesterday. Bret Schundler's nomination will be continued, a move which angered Republicans provoking some fun exchanges among Senators. Garden State Equality has been holding demolish the divide events around the state including Trenton last night. And lets not forget the fight over Executive power that has cropped up over budget cuts, COAH and other areas. We clearly have a full menu to choose from for the meal tonight.

Did we not mention the issue you're thinking about? Drop your comments, questions and concerns down below, then tune in and join the conversation!
