Apparently, Elaine Rabbitt is no longer an asset to the Bergen County patronage machine. She is now a liability, apparently.
She was suspended without pay from her $60,000 job in the engineering dept (I thought she was just a makeup artist) in a move that observers say has never happened before.
It may have something to do with her being INDICTED on forgery charges stemming from the 2005 special election at the BCDO for a state senate seat.
http://www.northjersey.com/new...
Why, just a week ago, she was touted as an ardent supporter of newly coronated Mike Kasparian, developer, and eminent domain afficionado.
In fact they listed her TWICE:
http://www.bluejersey.com/show...
She is on the State Democratic Committee as well as the Municipal Chair in Bergenfield. She had to step aside as Councilwoman in Bergenfiield. She declined to run this past November. (It would have been tough running for re-election when your opponents could use a picture of you behind bars.)
When you consider that HER ball-and-chain, live-in boyfriend Kevin Clancy, had to step down from being Municipal Chair due to everyone suspecting HIM of the forgeries, you have to shake your head and just say : "You just can't make this stuff up."
Because of the forgeries, Clancy handed the Municipal Chairmanship to the very person to be indicted for the crime 3 years later.
Unfortunately, up till last week, it appeared that alleged forger Ms. Rabbitt still had a future in the Democratic party. Now the suspension of her patronage job puts that bright future in doubt. She could have risen to the level of say - Senator Coniglio. (Oops, HE's in trouble now too), or let's say, Dennis Oury, who was Joe's right hand for a while. (Oops, HE was indicted too), or say, Joe himself someday. (Oops, INDICTED). Or how about Eileen DeBari or Ken Zisa of the Election Board. Oops, now THEY have to defend themselves for illegally firing poll workers in Teaneck. Or how about Mayor Michael Wildes, whose planning board just let his buddies file a COAH builder's remedy suit against the town by delaying their COAH submission for a few days. Ah, that is more like it. You have to be good at Pay-to-Play and screwing the taxpayers, but you have to make sure you do it LEGALLY.
Anyway, about her suspension. It couldn't have happened to a nicer person.:)

Mike Kelly connects the dots for the public on the Bergenfield forgeries.
http://www.northjersey.com/opi...
Not many folks realized that Kevin Clancy is alleged forger and former Councilwoman Elaine Rabbitt's live-in.
Kelly muses on how large a net was cast in the hunt for the forgers who hoped to rig the NJ State Senate District 37 special election in 2005 in favor of Ken Zisa, who is now on the Bergen County Board of Elections, and against Loretta Weinberg, who won after all the real votes were counted.
At the time, Kevin Clancy was Municipal Chair of the Bergenfield Democrats and staunch Ferriero-crat. He was also on the Board of Elections too. What you'd call IRONY if you realize Clancy knew enough about the fact that these were forgeries to TELL Tim Driscoll not to show up at the election because he was no longer on the CC. If Clancy simply received these forgeries FROM Driscoll, why the need to tell Driscoll what he already should know??
Thank you, Mr. Kelly. There IS more to this story than footnotes. If we don't find out the rest of this story soon, more embarassment for the BCDO and Democrats in Bergen County may be on the way during the NEXT election.

Gee, Senate seats and Pay-To-Play. Hmmmm. Where have I heard that before? No, not Mr. Blagojevich, Not Illinois. I'm talking about Jersey. Specifically, my introduction to the politics of the BCDO.
The year was 2005, and I was excited to participate in my very first special election to help choose a NJ State Senator. Byron Baer was retiring and his seat was open. Before the next election, the County Committee of District 37 got to choose who replaced him before the next general election. That is how a lot of NJ legislators get their seats. The folks retiring wait till their party can replace them without the possibility of the other party winning an election. The incumbents always have the edge. Anyway, Joe Ferriero thought he had it made. He PROMISED Baer's seat to Ken Zisa.
Only a few folks stood in the way. The folks who openly endorsed Loretta Weinberg for the seat who actually (gasp!) planned on voting for her. Some folks from Bergenfield. A few upstarts from Englewood who had been thrown off the line for dissenting. A few upstarts from Teaneck. The entire Tenafly Municipal Committee (Tenafly had already been soaked by Mr. Oury for a half million during COAH battle where he was a court appointed attorney, and the Dems here were told that if they wanted $$$ help from the BCDO they would have to let Joe pick their Attorney and their Engineer- appalled, they said no to Joe), and the Black Caucus.
Less than 250 votes were needed. It didn't take long for the Pro-Ferriero forces to realize, they could just go after the BCDO folks who didn't have County Jobs, African American voters from District 37, The entire Tenafly County Committee, and the few Pro-Loretta voters from Bergenfield.
Soooo, Tim Driscoll gets a call not to show up at the election by Clancy (Rabbit's live-in boyfriend), because of the resignation letter. (To paraphrase Yosemite Sam - "Criminals is SO stupid!") Why would Clancy call Driscoll to tell him he (Driscoll) resigned? At the election, 5 of the Tenafly committee - including 3 sitting Councilmen and our Treasurer were challenged at the election. In a month long legal effort to get the votes of the "Tenafly 5" counted, instead of losing by 1 vote, Loretta Weinberg wins by 4. All 5 Tenafly votes were for her.
To fill Loretta's seat, Valerie Huttle steps up to the plate, and we endorse her against Michael Wildes. At THAT election nearly ALL the Tenafy folks including ME and the folks already declared eligible to vote by the Courts, are challenged. After about 5:30 - every African American voter gets pulled out of line. The ENTIRE Teaneck Committee gets challenged too. Anyone who even LOOKS like they will vote for Valerie gets challenged.
Rothman, to his credit, corrects the horrendous assault on decency and lets our Committee and the Teaneck Committee vote. Even though many votes are still provisional, Valerie wins enough so we don't need to head to court.
In 2006, to get rid of the insurgency of folks against Pay-to-Play and any open supporters of Loretta and Valerie, Joe throws us on Column 4 in the election. We work like hell to keep our seats. Most of us do.
I nominate an opponent to Joe Ferriero at his re-election because being from Tenafly - the home of Elizabeth Cady Stanton, our vote actually means something precious to us here and Joe's attempts to take that from us, infuriate us.
Then Joe and Oury cook up a plot to make the County Committee votes for District State Senator County-wide instead of District wide. He hopes to get enough help from creeps OUTSIDE D37 to unseat his honest nemesis, Senator Weinberg. In an insta-protest we stage with the help of Blue Jersey, we get enough votes to kill that effort to give folks outside our district Representation without Representation (it would be like NJ residents voting for Gov of NY)
After that nonsense, we lose faith in the unsecret County Committee "elections" enough to ask Loretta Weinberg and team to run off the line. They do and the Real Bergen Democrats are born. To give a voice to the opposition slate opposed to Pay-to-Play and to create a vehicle that allows Tim Driscoll and his team of anti-corruption Dems to win the Mayor's seat and kick Oury out of his comfy Borough Attorney's position - which by the way is another sad corruption story responsible for Oury's current unhappiness with the justice system - his September indictment with Joe Ferriero.
All this time, these three years we spent fighting Joe and Oury and Elaine Rabbit and Mulligan and their attempts to run a write in campaign after losing the Primary to Tim Driscoll and his team of Real Bergen Democrats. We fought through the sham BCDO "elections", the Bylaws attacks and Bylaws breaches by Ferriero, and the attempts to bring in the heavy hitters to kick more of us out of our County Committee seats in 2008. We withstood it all. Tim Driscoll and Bruce Carlson holding down the fort for us in Bergenfield, Charlotte Bennett Schoen and her team holding the fort for us and Theresa Thomas keeping us informed from Englewood, the entire Tenafly Municipal Commitee led by Shama Haider keeping us Ferriero-free and Pay-to-Play free in Tenafly, and the Teaneck Committee fending off attacks on their non-partisan town by Ferriero's "Team Teaneck" who play the "religion card", while also fending off Dennis Oury's "Master Plans" for real estate deals in Teaneck. Some of our favorite Real Bergen Dems in Teaneck lost due to a concerted effort by Joe to get rid of them in the Primary, but we withstood many attacks on our seats when many folks said it couldn't be done. We kept them at bay.
I give great Kudos to Driscoll and Carlson, particularly for having to actually sit at the Council mtgs and deal with Mulligan and Rabbit. I am so happy to see that Christmas came early for Bergenfield. Tim Driscoll finally gets some justice.
Although the Blagojevich story unfolded in Illinois, it at least is educating folks in NJ what Pay-to-play is and why they should care. I was startled to hear folks on Chris Matthews show saying that this doesn't happen a lot. I sat up and said "Hello! It does in NJ!" at the TV. Mathews was shocked that Blagojevich used the term Pay-to-Play, but he doesn't realize - Joe and Oury almost sued NJ because they equate it with "free speech". I guess they figure if they say it enough here in NJ it will lose its shock value.
And so this indictment is vindicating. When the public finally now knows what Pay-to-Play is. After Dennis Oury and Joe Ferriero are already indicted. In a shadenfreud- like stupor, I imagine Dennis, Joe, Mulligan, Rabbit and Joe Coniglio all in a Good Fellas style prison where Joe is making the Sunday gravy and serving it over some stuffed peppers - cause that's all they can get there (and I know how much Ferriero hates stuffed peppers).
It all started with a Senate Seat. And a mentality that it was up for sale - or it was OWED to someone, or PROMISED to someone. This happened here in Bergen County, not Illinois, but it IS more common than the average voter would like to think.
Well, it's off to daydream about which Pay-to-Play Party Boss or corrupt elected official my all-time favorite hero Warren Monroe will catch next........ :)

I am still waiting for justice and getting nowhere. In fact, things in Bergen County are getting worse. Sanctioned, condoned, and coddled by Jon Corzine for being a good dining companion, Joe Ferriero gets away with everything short of murder here in NJ. We, the County Commitee who are ignored and disenfranchised at EVERY turn while trying to represent our Democratic voters, have just about had it.
I don't CARE if Joe can raise money. I don't CARE if he knows which wine to order. I don't care if he can be charming or funny at times. He is a blight on our party. He is the most horrendous party boss this nation has seen since Tammany Hall.
I would invite everyone here to DEMAND that the State INVESTIGATE and PROSECUTE to the fullest extent of the law - those responsible for forging the names of the Bergenfield County Committee members in 2005. Write letters - call. Do whatever it takes.
Even the mainstream media is recognizing there is a disconnect here between our Justice Department and true justice. See yesterday's column by Mike Kelly.
These people are the ones who are now advocating MERGING municipalities in NJ and consolidating power into a few hands. We need to make sure they speak for the voters and NOT for the Pay-To-Play players who are so greedy, their lust for money knows no bounds.
http://www.northjersey.com/pol...
We don't have democracy in the most populated part of the State. We should not have to wait for the wheels of justice to finally work when our State Legislature is up for sale to the highest bidder.
Shame on you, Jon Corzine for not making ETHICS the cornerstone of your fight to lower taxes. For not making prosecution of forgers who would disenfranchise Committee members a top priority. Are you serious about government ethics reform? A good start would be investigating your good friend - Joe Ferriero and the machinery of the Bergen County Government and shadow governments that appoint friends to cement their hold on power.
Because ethics is not a priority for this administration, I and my friends in Bergenfield are still waiting for justice, and waiting, and waiting......

( - promoted by Juan Melli)
Congrats to Mayor Tim Driscoll, the voters of Bergenfield and the Real Bergen Democrats. Promoted from the diaries -- Juan Just got back from the Celebration in Bergenfield, where WWII veteran, and brand new Mayor Tim Driscoll took the reins at his very first Reorganization meeting of the Governing Body of Bergenfield for 2008. Real Bergen Democrats Barry Doll and Bruce Carlson joined him on the dias. What a beautiful sight for ethics reform in NJ. Everyone was there - by that I mean the "Merry Band of Reformers" Real Bergen Democrats, and their supporters including, Loretta Weinberg, Valerie Vainieri Huttle, Gordon Johnson, Carol Skiba, Paul Eisenmann, Nick Lento as well as all the press. It was a long meeting, but the best part and most entertaining was watching Councilmen Mulligan and Lodato squirmily adjust to their new roles as the obstinate bullies who have been taken down a peg. Mulligan couldn't bring himself to vote YES to a different Borough attorney than Oury. You could see the calculations going on in that shiny head of his, as to how many DOLLARS he would lose for re-election if he voted YES to a Mayor Driscoll's choice, and you could see him calculate how many VOTES he would lose by ticking off the voters with a NO vote. So what do bullies do, when cornered? They vote to ABSTAIN. But they always give a speech while doing so. It reminded me of watching Scooby Doo as a child. I pictured him saying - "Drat! Foiled again! I would've got away with voting Dennis Oury in again, too - if it weren't for those meddling kids, I mean Real Bergen Democrats, and their ethics reform minded friends in the Assembly and Senate - Weinberg, Johnson and Huttle! " But my daydream disappeared in a poof as Mulligan waxed on about how he thinks Dennis Oury is the bestest Borough Attorney in the whole wide world. I had to resist the urge to cough disrupively into my hand and say "Liar" or break into cackles of hysterical laughter at the absurdity of the moment. Because Councilwoman Rabbit was absent (scared away perhaps) Lodato knew the writing was on the wall - he did not have enough votes to Vote NO. And with a long speech that seemd to be a public apology for his vote (kissing up to Oury) he stunned us with a YES vote. The Room erupted into thunderous and enthusiastic applause when enough yes votes were taken to send the ubiqitous Mr. Oury packing. We were cheated of the sight of Oury himself packing his briefcase and making sure the door didn't hit his backside on the way out, but we got to see Renfield, or whatever the diminutive associate's name was who was filling in for Oury, slink away to the applause of nearly everyone in the room - except Mulligan and Lodato. I smiled. It was a very good day in my hometown of Bergenfield. Mike Kelly at the Bergen Record frames the election of Bergenfield mayor-elect Tim Driscoll and his opposition to Bergen County Democratic chair Joe Ferriero's pay-to-play machine as a proxy battle for the direction of the Democratic party:What's interesting here is that Driscoll's clean-government campaign has managed to shine a spotlight on the moral rot at the center of the pay-to-play system. By contributing money as a way of landing government jobs, political appointees are not hired because they have good ideas. A prime factor is money.
If any Democrat doubts this, ask yourself this question: What issues and policies do Joe Ferriero, Dennis Oury and the other pay-to-play cronies stand for?
The answer to that question reveals that the pay-to-play war is really a fight over the soul of the Democratic Party in New Jersey. Will it become an organization of inspired ideas and policies? Or will it be the domain of power-hungry hacks who dole out political contributions? The entire column is worth a read for a good summary of the situation. Driscoll is poking a hot sauce-covered finger in the eye of Bergen County's corrupt Democratic party leadership.
And we should expect them to use that corrupt system to fight to perpetuate itself. If they haven't already, Bergenfield council members may be getting some enticing phone calls with promises of jobs in exchange for fealty to boss Ferriero.
The result of this fight could signal which direction the Democratic party will go in Bergen County and beyond: Will it become an organization of inspired ideas and policies? Or will it be the domain of power-hungry hacks who dole out political contributions? The choice should be an easy one. I'm with Tim Driscoll.

LD37 Incumbents, Senator Loretta Weinberg and her running mates, Assemblyman Gordon Johnson and Assemblywoman Valerie Huttle qualify for more Clean Elections campaign funds. And once again, Ms. Nibot from Bergenfield and her running mates do not.
You could almost pity poor Ms. Nibot according to this Stiles column in the Record. Tsk. Tsk. Actually bribing elderly ladies with the promise of a free dinner if they would be her 400th contributor. Sad. So sad.
However, hold your pity for a moment. Bergenfield does wierd things to folks lately........
Without the slightest sense of even understanding the irony of it all, Nibot has asked the ELEC to look into how Loretta Weinberg is spending her Clean Elections money. After campaigning as the Clean Elections candidate up until the bitter end, while actually never being certified an OFFICIAL NJ Clean Elections candidate (talk about misleading packaging), Ms, Nibot has the raw unadulterated chutzpah to challenge Senator Weinberg about how she spends her newly acquired campaign funds. I feel like Jon Stewart when he rubs his eyes furiously with his palms, shakes his head, looks up wide eyed and says Whaaaaaaa?
Come again, Ms. Nibot? If anyone is a Clean Candidate it is Senator Weinberg. It is certainly not you. According to ELEC, I have the proof. You didn't QUALIFY. You will just have to accept funds from folks like Joe Ferriero, Councilman Mulligan, or whoever else is funding your misleading campaign against our incumbent Senator.
As for Ms. Nibot's indignation that Senator Weinberg is looking into how our public utilities are run, whether for ideas on how to improve them or to root out corruption, what the heck is wrong with that? As a voter in NJ, I'd be happy to know that our Senator is looking after our interests everywhere - especially in expensive places and under rocks we often don't think to look. I hate to tell Ms. Nibot,"It ain't all about you, sweetheart." Just because you don't think a candidate should do any research except to learn all about your failings, doesn't mean Senator Weinberg is doing anything illegal or even unethical. It just tells me, you have more issues than a newstand. I don't know if I care to figure out what they all are before November 6 and I don't know if the voters have the time or inclination either.
See below for more links and articles explaining the real ways campaign money corrupts the political process. After reading them, tell me how a desperate Republican like Ms. Nibot can attack a popular honest Democratic State Senator like Loretta Weinberg who has just persuaded over 800 District 37 voters to give her 10$ each. Tell me that Niibot is the clean candidate when she can't even stay above the kind of nasty smears and innuendos that characterize the dirtiest of politics.
Ms. Nibot, it is you who needs to "come clean" and stop advertising yourself as the Clean Candidate when you are NOT.

Boy, it will get interesting this November in Bergenfield.
When Timothy Driscoll and the Real Bergen Dems won the Primary in June, they ticked off the Ferriero Democrats in town - and so the Council President Dennis Mulligan, APPALLED that things didn't go his way in a fair election, has launched a Write-In campaign to get around the sore loser laws. His girl Dolores Butler lost the Primary and he's coming to her rescue to fight for her honor, or something, unleashing a general election Free For All in the process.
According to the Twin Boro News in Bergenfield in an article by Steve Kelman, Mulligan said he was jumping into the race just before the General Election because " The June Primary was hijacked by out-of-town forces that donated tens of thousands of dollars to destroy the Democratic Party in Bergenfield."
"The result" he said "is a candidate that does not reflect the Democratic Party of Bergenfield."
Excuse Me? Looks like Democracy finally actually WORKED in town. The out-of -towners didn't vote for Mr. Driscoll, the BERGENFIELD Voters of the Democratic persuasion did. Maybe they voted for Mr. Driscoll because he is an honest WWII veteran whose has been writing tirelessly on behalf of folks in Bergenfield - like my Dad. Maybe they don't like the kind of politics practiced by Mr. Mulligan who saw nothing wrong with the fact Mr. Driscoll was disenfranchised when his name was forged to kick him OUT of the County Committee. Maybe they liked his running mate Bruce Carlson who happens to be the lone voice of reason from the Democrats on the current town council?
My Dad lives in Bergenfield, and I'm telling you - residents there want to TAR AND FEATHER the Ferrierocrats who are RUINING Bergenfield.
And now in a scene from "They just can't make this stuff up." The current Republican Mayor who was not seeking to be re-elected has thrown his hat into the ring after the Republican Primary when the current R Candidate got the nod in an uncontested Primary. He is probably afraid to see his town fall under the total grasp of Ferriero now that the machine candidates are back in the race.
And so after a Primary which resulted in 1 Democratic and 1 Republican candidate for Mayor, Bergenfield voters will be bombarded by literature from 2 SEPARATE Democratic Campaigns, and 2 SEPARATE Republican Campaigns. Got that? There ought to be a law. It's like if Lieberman had a sore loser law where he was from and convinced his bestest buddy to "get even" with Ted Lamont by running as a Dem in a sneak write-in campaign. They just can't take "no" for an answer.

The Real Bergen Democrats slate of candidates scored some key victories tonight. In Bergenfeld, Timothy Driscoll - who two years ago had his signature forged on a resignation letter in an attempt to disqualify him from voting in a tight special election - defeated Dolores Butler, the candidate of the same people who tried to disenfranchise him.
His running mates - Barry Doll and Councilman Bruce Carlson - defeated BCDO candidates Carlos Aguasvivas and John Person.
In Ward 2 of Englewood, Council President Charlotte Bennett Schoen defeated BCDO candidate Marvin Anault.
In Fort Lee, Councilman Michael Villano - the Real Bergen Democrats mayoral candidate - lost to the current mayor Jack Alter.
Bergen County Sheriff Leo McGuire (BCDO) held on to his seat by defeating Allen Gailes, Jr (RBD).

Apparently, BCDO attorney Dennis Oury who just so happens to be the new Bergenfield Borough Attorney is in hot water for charging the Bergenfield taxpayers for political work:
http://www.northjers...
Can you say "pay to play"?
Also, apparently unbonded folks who worked in the tax assessors office collected and absconded with tax payments made in cash to the Borough. They were fired after the fact - but there is a lot of anger rising from the taxpayers of Bergenfield. Finding out that they are also paying for Dennis Oury's extracurricular activities is not going over very well.
I wouldn't be surprised if someone got tarred and feathered soon. The Primary in June is going to be VERY interesting. Timothy Driscoll is running as a Real Bergen Democrat for Mayor there and is becoming quite popular due to his strong stand against Oury and Pay to Play. I have heard from folks in town and if Driscoll wins the Democratic Primary, he is probably sure to win the General Election in November.
Timothy Driscoll, you may remember, is the WWII veteran and Bergen County Democratic Committee member who found himself the victim of a forgery before Loretta Weinberg's special election at the BCDO. I really think he has a fantastic chance of winning this Primary due to the voters in Bergenfield finding out about the corruption and pay to play nonsense there.
Bergenfield is definitely a town to watch in this Primary.

Update to last night's entry:
The papers didn't pick it up. City officials don't know anything about it. But I've spoken with eyewitnesses that saw uniformed men take away 4 or 5 hispanic immigrants from their apartment around the hours of four and six on Monday morning. I'm not sure as to what this means or what comes next or what I should do. Two cars and a van drop by an apartment and take people away and life goes on in Englewood, NJ. Just another day. Numbing. Accion y paciencia. Accion y paciencia. Accion y paciencia. Accion y paciencia. Accion y paciencia...
-------------------------------------------------
Come what may. Earlier this evening I was informed that there was an ICE raid in Englewood on Palisades Avenue. I've no confirmation of this from any news sources. Just fyi NJ, ICE is Immigration and Customs Enforcement (US Department of Homeland Security; formerly parts of Immigration & Naturalization Service and US Customs). And I will assume that this happened and I am not surprised. After all, the United Patriots of America, UPA (with ties to the Minutemen Project, vigilantes that patrol the border) has intimidated day laborers in Bergenfield. And there's Bogota, of course!

Immigrants in New Jersey, as in the rest of the United States, are facing increasing attacks. ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) raids are being stepped up, tearing families apart, detaining and deporting those who have lived here for years. Demagogic town governments are taking anti-immigrant measures. Morristown, for example, is planning to deputize its police as ICE agents. Massive workplace raids like the recent one in New Bedford, Mass. can happen at any time. A New Jersey radio station, 101.5, has called for people to turn in their neighbors as suspected undocumented immigrants, encouraging vigilantism.
The attacks on migrants are attacks on all of us. They are aimed at maintaining an underclass of workers who are too terrified to assert their rights to decent pay, working conditions and living conditions. No one, not even the government, wants to deport 12 million undocumented immigrants who are vital to the economy. The attacks and anti-immigrant laws aim to drive down the cost of all labor, benefiting employers, pitting worker against worker, and hurting us all.
We are fighting back, immigrants and native-born united! We are speaking out against the attacks and the demagogic proposal in towns like Morristown's and Freehold. We are starting to organize a Rapid Response Network which will give aid to those confronting ICE raids or employer abuses of immigrants. We are joining with organizations across the country to organize a Second Great Boycott.
Speak out for the rights of ALL!

CESAR A. PERALES, the president of the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund, is revved up. But he is not losing his cool. (He is too cool for that.) He is talking about the fund's wranglings in federal court over the attempt by Freehold Borough in Monmouth County, N.J., to prevent day laborers from gathering at a vacant lot to scout for work.
''The question of the treatment of day laborers is so flagrant, I feel it viscerally,'' Mr. Perales says, leaning over to emphasize the point. ''This is to me as horrific as the segregation that the government imposed in the South. We're seeing local governments treating undocumented workers in a similar fashion, marginalizing them, not wanting them to live where they live. This is a fight that will take a long time.''
