Good luck to Bonnie Watson Coleman, Cory Booker, and the entire 114th Congress

Bonnie Watson ColemanRight now, a trailblazer in a silver pixie cut is being sworn in as a freshman member of the United States Congress House of Representatives. New Jersey has never before sent a Black woman to Congress; she becomes our first. BWC is a solid New Jersey Democrat – a former chair of the state party – but more importantly she’s been a person of bedrock progressive and Democratic  values who actually stood up for those values in recent years when lesser Democrats caved, undermined working families and helped Gov. Christie build his legend.

I’m going to miss her voice in the NJ Legislature, but I will be grateful to see it raised up in Congress.

Today is Swearing-In Day for the 114th Congress, a day of pomp and circumstance and of politics; today for the first time in 8 years, Republicans assume full control of Congress. Following the late-morning oath-taking, Congress convenes at noon, so directed by the Constitution.

In the Senate, VP Joe Biden will preside, with Mitch McConnell ascending to Majority Leader. House Speaker John Boehner faces a leadership challenge from his right (if that’s possible) from Rep. Louis Gohmert of Texas. Boehner will prevail, but it’s messy. House Republicans are still dealing with the scandal of their Majority Whip Steve Scalise’s cozying up to white supremacists in 2002. Scalise (of Louisiana) still has Boehner’s backing and the orangey Speaker will prevail. So, I guess House Republicans are OK with how their party smells right now. And what else is new?

Senator Cory Booker will be sworn in today, having won his re-election against Jeff Bell in November. And the House renews itself with every member of both parties, both incoming freshman like BWC and returning members; this will be the country’s 114th Congress.

I wish them each good luck today. Today, everything starts new.

Joe Biden to swear in Cory Booker to the U.S. Senate – Noon on Halloween

Cory BookerWhat a month of firsts October has been for Cory Booker. Election to the U.S. Senate, his first federal office and a significant jump from Newark mayor. The loss of the first of his parents, just days before, a heartbreak. On Monday morning, seconds after midnight, presiding over the first marriage ceremony he ever performed, and the first in Newark of a same-sex couple.

And Senator-Elect Booker will close out his October of firsts on the very last day of the month, when he will be sworn in to the United States Senate by Joe Biden, one of the most popular politicians in his neighboring state of New Jersey, Vice President of the United States and President of the Senate.

The ceremony will be noon, on October 31 – Halloween – in the Senate Chambers of the U.S. Congress.

And from the moment of his swearing in, another first for all of us. New Jersey will become the only state represented in Congress’ upper house by two elected leaders from minority groups. A black senator, and a Latino senator will lead New Jersey’s congressional delegation, which beyond the senators and congressmen Albio Sires and Donald Payne, Jr. is all white.

And, so far, diversity in NJ’s congressional delegation does not extend to women. Maybe we can do something about that.

Christie to be sworn in as NJ’s 55th Governor

Chris Christie will take the oath of office as New Jersey’s 55th Governor just before noon today. Joining him will be our first ever Lieutenant Governor taking office as Kim Guadagno will be sworn in as well.

Christie will be the first Republican Goverrnor to lead the state since Don DiFrancesco left office 8 years ago.

You can watch the inauguration streaming live for the new Governor at NJN.net. Here’s what the schedule looks like:

Inaugural Mass – 8 am

Governor-elect Chris Christie’s Inauguration Day schedule begins with a morning Mass at Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, headquarters of the Newark Archdiocese. NJN News will present live coverage of the Mass and the swearing in ceremony later in the day.

Inaugural Ceremony – 11:30 am

NJN presents live coverage of the Inaugural Ceremony for Chris Christie who will become the 55th Governor of the State of New Jersey. Governor Christie’s inaugural theme is: “Rebuilding New Jersey Together: Pride through Service and Community.” The ceremony will take place at the Trenton War Memorial.

Something has been cut out of the schedule this year:

In a departure from tradition, Christie and outgoing Governor Corzine will not make the traditional walk from the State House to the War Memorial for the ceremony.

“We structured the inauguration in a way that would permit us to have a great day and permit everyone else to enjoy the day the way they wanted to enjoy it,” Christie said.

The day will close with an inaugural reception at the Prudential Center in Newark. I wish the new Governor and Lieutenant Governor the best of luck. We have many difficult challenges facing our state and while we have been very critical here at Blue Jersey, I would love to see them prove us wrong. What are your feelings today as Governor Corzine departs and Governor Christie assumes the role leading our state?
