Has Gottheimer Got It?

With the midterms less than four months away, Democratic Representative and incumbent Josh Gottheimer (CD 5) doesn’t have the race wrapped up, but the potential is there. A recent poll indicates Democrats are more enthusiastic about voting in the midterms. The…

That moment when I agree with Americans for Prosperity (no, not really)

We now know for sure Showboat Casino Hotel will close Aug. 31 – the third failing casino property of the year following the Atlantic Club being chopped up and sold for parts and the continuing money pit that is Revel Casino. And Americans for Prosperity (AFP) – the Koch Bros-funded group that right-winger (and handicapped white guy and cancer support group leader and serial candidate Steve Lonegan used to run in New Jersey – has some thoughts:

In a statement today, they complain about the  all the “subsidies, tax breaks, and taxpayer-funded low-interest loans in the world (that) are not going to bring Atlantic City back”.  Yeah, baby. They call Revel “an epic bust,” and decry the “corporate welfare” the state’s throwing at AC. The state “needs to stop trying to micromanage it back into relevance. Whoa, harsh. Better not tell the folks on AC’s new gay beach that.

I’ve got a problem with corporate welfare, too. More on that in a bit. And I’ve always been uncomfortable with New Jersey’s interest in using public money to create (or prop up) opportunities for working joes to gamble. It’s OK entertainment if you’re in control, and I know it has fans. But it also suckers the poor. Ditto the lottery, not a fan.

But let’s get clear on a couple things here. The casinos, as a labor leader at Unite HERE Local 54 says, never cared about Atlantic City. The casinos were a glass wall that divided the city from its own shore, and the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority (CRDA) soon shifted focus from housing there to casino/hotel-centered projects aimed at making AC competitive. And the surrounding areas (many of them mostly white) boomed while the city – largely black and with unaddressed hard-core unemployment, and problems that go with it – didn’t.

But that’s not why AFP objects. They don’t care how many people – many of them unionized – are going to lose their jobs this summer. When you get down to it, AFP barely recognizes unionized people as people. Atlantic City is easy for them to take a shot at because for years many of the politicians running looking after it have been Democrats (new mayor Don Guardian’s not a Dem, but he and his gay beach aren’t exactly their kind of Republican).

But beyond that, it’s funny that it’s AFP trying to claim the high ground against corporate welfare.

Fighting An Uphill Battle Against Christie’s Climate Deniers

There are a lot of issues facing us today, but arguably the most important one for this and future generations is the impact of global climate change. Even if we solve our problems with civil rights, the economy, and jobs, without a habitable planet, all of those solutions are for naught.

Searching for solutions, today Assemblyman Upendra Chivukula convened an informational session of his Telecommunications and Utilities Committee to hear testimony from all sides of this issue.

As David Pringle of the New Jersey Environmental Federation put it, this is not a zero sum game. In other words, we don’t have to choose between a clean environment and jobs. We can have both. In fact, according to Jeff Tittel of the New Jersey Sierra Club, the state has lost 1,800 jobs since Governor Christie unilaterally pulled the state out of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. We have fallen into fourth place in terms of solar energy, and our wind energy projects are stalled as they continue to wait for Christie administration approval. Jobs in these industries are going to neighboring states.

Probably the biggest waste of time, and yet the most entertaining part of the hearings was the testimony of climate-change deniers from Americans for Prosperity – a group that was led by Steve Lonegan before his Senate run. Every time they espoused their Fox “News” talking points, Chairman Chivukula struck them down with something the AFPers are unfamiliar with – facts. When confronted by Chivukula with scientific evidence, they determined that it was just “fairy tales.” One of them testified that RGGI was costing a 7 percent hike in electricity rates. Chivukula did not let them go unchallenged -he pointed out that the correct number is 0.7 percent. So in my estimation, the AFP crew is either stupidly misinformed or a bunch of liars.

After the hearing, I spoke with Chairman Chivukula to get a brief summary. Below the fold is a short audio interview with renowned climate scientist Dr. Anthony Broccoli of Rutgers.

Lick the Lame Duck Rally in D.C.

Duck at Rally
No, you didn’t miss the Lick the Lame Duck Rally yet, and I did not photoshop this. But isn’t it perfect?

Far be it from me to poke fun at the intended seriousness of a Tea Party gathering in our nation’s capital. After all, they’re currently feeling the shock not only of a botched GOP fight for the White House (Romney was so not the right candidate, they say, and well, duh), but also the loss of Chris Christie and the wonder-rays of conservative goodness that emanate from his very fingertips (okay, that might be overstating).

And so, like the fabulous Kill the Bill Rally they threw in D.C. as a more equitable health care system was rising, Americans for Prosperity (AFP), lead here in NJ by Steve Lonegan, is inviting its minions to yet another D.C. rally. The scare this time? President Obama and “Taxmageddon”.

Stop the Liberal Lame Duck Madness!

Register NOW to Lick the Lame Duck Rally with AFP on Thursday, December 13 in DC!

Really? You don’t like the president’s “radical agenda” or “Big Government” so you’re going to go lick a duck? This might be a poor choice. Duck might not like it.

The rightiest of the right wing has a history of embarrassing nomenclature. After all, these are the good folks who brought you the teabagger movement before somebody finally … Ermahgerd – that means WHAT with a scrotum??

Perhaps they weren’t familiar with John Waters’ Pecker. BONUS: Famous teabagger scene from John Waters’ Pecker, below the fold!)

3313864503_16bcc382faOf course when teabagger finally clicked into place (roughly 2 minutes after they looked up Santorum on teh Google) they fervently denied they ever called themselves teabaggers, willfully denying their own history. But I kid, because I love.

And now, just because I love you people so much, here’s the teabagging scene from Pecker. Jump!

suggests they’re not familiar with John Waters’ Pecker. As it were.

Teabagging is forbidden here at The Fudge House.

willfully forgetting their own history.

Why does the Tea Party fear children with kites?

Oh the humanity! Children flying kites on the beach! You'd think New Jersey was under attack by terrorists with Predator Kites if you believed the panic Americans for Prosperity are in over a planned celebration of Global Wind Day by the Sierra Club.

The Koch-backed AFP is organizing a counter-protest to uphold the “rights” of the billionaire carbon fuel barons, and defend oil and coal subsidies from attack by “Kids with Kites” supporting clean, renewable energy. How daring and patriotic of AFP!

Just what are these “environmental extremists” thinking in their support public investment in a local clean-energy industry? Big tax subsidies belong solely to big oil & coal companies, right?

Wrong!

The “Battle on the Beach” is garnering national attention, as witnessed by this Maddow Blog entry, and a write-up by Stephen Lacey on the ThinkProgress Cllimate Progress blog.
