RNC Staffing Up In NJ For Hispanic Outreach

promoted by Rosi

Considering how badly the GOP has stumbled in reaching out to Latinos in the past few years there’s not a lot to worry about here, though it’s possible they’ll finally get it right.

Continuing to strengthen the Republican Party’s relationships in Hispanic communities across the country, the Republican National Committee (RNC) is announcing its Hispanic engagement staff in seven states – California, Florida, New Jersey, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, Texas and Virginia. The engagement team will build a grassroots infrastructure and engage with voters at community events, as well as strengthen our ties with Hispanic Republicans. As part of the RNC’s effort to build a permanent ground operation, the RNC will work in partnership with state parties to ensure a year-round presence in Latino neighborhoods. Additionally, by the end of the year, the committee will make investments in 11 other states.

The emphasis is not in the original, just to highlight NJ.

I have to wonder why NJ is one of the first places they’re reaching out to, and the only thing I can figure is they think the Garden State would be in play with a Chris Christie at the head of the ticket.  Maybe they think pulling a couple percentage points out of the growing Hispanic population in the state could put him over the top, or at least force the Dems to play in a state they usually consider an ATM but ignore electorally.

I don’t see them thinking NJ would help in Congressional, since no objective observer sees any district — D or R — as in play right now, and any momentum that puts it in play is not going to be muted by a couple staffers spending 12 months at community events.

I also don’t see them really worrying about the state legislative elections because that’s not what national party organs do.  That’s the state’s problem. Plus the next time they could impact would be 2015 and there’s not enough evidence the leg would be in play then to start putting money here now.

That leaves the 2016 Presidential, and an early effort like Howard Dean’s 50 state strategy to put a traditionally blue Presidential state into a real contest.

Any thoughts?

Will the NJ GOP Attack Chairman Martinez for Amnesty and Social Security for Illegal Aliens?

Today, U.S. Senator Mel Martinez was named the new general chairman of the Republican National Committee. Like Senator Menendez, Senator Martinez is a Cuban-American.

And also like Senator Menendez, Senator Martinez voted to table this amendment:

S.Amdt. 3985  to S. 2611 (Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2006)
To reduce document fraud, prevent identity theft, and preserve the integrity of the Social Security system, by ensuring that persons who receive an adjustment of status under this bill are not able to receive Social Security benefits as a result of unlawful activity.

If you’ve already forgotten, this vote spawned numerous attacks on Senator Menendez. My home received two mailers, funded by the NJ Republican State Committee, entirely devoted to that vote. And who can forget the ads?

So the question is, ‘Will the NJ GOP attack Chairman Martinez for giving Amnesty and Social Security benefits to illegal aliens?’

A list of the other GOP Senators who voted to table the amendment after the jump.
