Score one for fairness

by: Jason Springer

Tue Jul 01, 2008 at 01:13:38 PM EDT

I missed this when it happened, but recently Rob Andrews laid the smack down during a committee hearing on transgender discrimination in the workplace.  The first speaker in this clip, a transgender man, spoke about some of the challenges facing transgender employees.

Following the testimony of the first speaker, Congressman Andrews gave a shout out to Garden State Equality for their great work and then moved onto questioning the second speaker about his opposition to equal rights for transgender employees in the workplace ...

If we would just treat people like people and not worry about their circumstances, we wouldn't have this problem.  I can only hope that years from now when I have children, people will look back on these debates and say how foolish it was that we even spent our time worrying about these things.

bravo (3.50 / 2)
it makes me proud when our leaders stick up for me and my people.

in most states you can be fired for being gay or trans.  thankfully NJ is NOT one of those places.  but for our brothers and sisters living in more hostile social climes, it's encouraging when our national leaders step up for fairness like this.

activist for hire.

If This "Intellectual" Klutz And Morally Deficient (0.00 / 0)
.....fool testifying for the "right" of an employer to fire people just because of the sexual identity is the best these "religious" people can put up to defend the status quo; then there should be some strong anti-discrimination laws passing soon.

Andrews eviscerated the fool with simple cold hard logic.  Well done!!!

Bigotry has nothing to do with the will of God; on the contrary it is massively un-Christian to treat people as subhuman.

Bigotry is the result of fear, prejudice, hatred, ignorance and sheer small minded pettiness.  Period.

It's astounding that, as Jay says,...

"in most states you can be fired for being gay or trans."

This is one more reason to make sure that the Obama landslide is so large and that he has the kind of long coat tails that will insure a filibuster proof majority in the Senate.

Are there any NJ congressional Republicans that are against  ending this legalized bigotry?    What's Scott Garrett's position on this subject?   I would guess that's he's for the federal status quo; but I wouldn't mond being wrong on that.
