I have some news to share.
The Observer Media Group has announced that Juan Melli will join Politicker.com next week as the Associate Editor. Melli founded the New Jersey-based political blog BlueJersey.com in 2005 and has since served as publisher and managing editor.  He is completing a PhD in Mechanical Engineering at Princeton University. Melli will no longer write for BlueJersey.com.
That means there will be some changes. Most visibly, Rosi Efthim will take over as Editorial Director and Scott Shields as Technical Director. They've both been around since day one and without their work and that of all the writers, Blue Jersey wouldn't be what it is today. I'm confident they will keep the boat rocking and rolling.

If my thesis committee has mercy on me, I should be finished with school very soon. Besides looking for a distraction from the grad school grind, one of the main reasons I started Blue Jersey almost three years ago was because I didn't know anything at all about New Jersey politics. Some might say I still don't, but I feel like I've learned a lot from this community -- especially when it's challenged me to think critically and reevaluate my views. I'm very grateful to have had this fun and educational experience.

I won't be posting here any more, but that doesn't mean you won't be hearing from me in the future. My Blue Jersey email address won't be valid for much longer so for those who would like to keep in touch or try to sell me fake Rolex watches or mortgage products my email address is my first initial + last name + @gmail.com.

So thank you to everyone who has joined along in this experiment to make New Jersey politics and government more open and responsive. There's still a very long way to go, but I know the people here will continue to play an important role in that process. Thank you.

So long (4.00 / 6)
and thanks for all the fish, Juanny Appleseed.

To hell with what she wants, let's make Rosi Efthim the next DSC chair.

Congratulations! (4.00 / 4)
You will be missed.  I always looked forward to your clear, snappy writing style.  Best to you.

Congratulations (4.00 / 3)

I have to think of a witty signature about Frank LoBiondo

Juan Melli Will You Please Go Now! (4.00 / 3)
No sniffy farewells, no drawn-out goodbyes.  Just leave already, would ya?

:-)

Wow. (4.00 / 3)
Congrats and good luck and all that. And we'll miss you big time.

Congrats Juan (4.00 / 3)
Our huge loss is Politicker's huge gain. All best on your next journey.

Best of luck (4.00 / 3)
Juan.

And Rock On.

WOW (4.00 / 4)
When I saw Rosi's name as Editorial  Director, I thought either that your dissertation was doing you in or that you were kidnapped by, you know, them terra-ists.

Good luck to you.  While there are lots of interesting items on politicker.com, your contributions will make the site consistently readable.

And all the best to you, Rosi.  Get out that whip!  (I keeeed!)

Congrats (4.00 / 3)
Good luck with the new job!   You've done a big service to NJ by starting BlueJersey.   Thank you!!

::sob, sob:: G-g-good bye, J-J-Juan (4.00 / 3)
Gimme a second to pull myself together here.

You'll most certainly be missed.  Have fun slumming around internet ghetto of Policticker.  Maybe you can gentrify the place.  Do you now have the authority to tell Wally Edge to not be so much of a tool?

Give 'em hell Juan! (4.00 / 3)
Keep all of those cranky conservatives at PolitickerNJ.com in line, will ya?

does this mean you're voting for McCain??? (4.00 / 3)
and no more anti-war marches?? marriage equality ads?? and a change in views on W7??? good luck - you deserve the promotion.  hopefully we won't be left with a dreaded sense that "juanny's not here anymore mrs. torrance... redjuan."

Promotion? What Promotion? (4.00 / 3)
He's just getting paid, but this is a demotion!  :-)

Juan (4.00 / 9)
This is the stickiest and gooiest I'm ever going to get on this site, I swear it. But I have to say a few things about Juan.

I stand in awe of a person nearly half my age. Juan is one of the bravest people I know. I am forever learning things from him, and - this is what saves our friendship - he is forever cracking me up.

I'm capable of turning into a blithering idiot talking about Juan. Trust me on this. I respect, and trust him more than almost anybody. I'm incredibly proud of what he's built here, and damned lucky to be on this team. It's one of the reasons Scott and I are not flipping out being handed these new roles. Blue Jersey's columnists are fearless, and direct - that won't change. Readers here are encouraged to write - that won't change and that's what makes Blue Jersey the tough and wonderful neighborhood it is.

Next week, Scott and I will have a few things we might want to say.

Today's all about Juan.

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

Congrats and Good luck (4.00 / 4)
You built one hell of a blog.

Take it to them (4.00 / 4)
You've done a great job with BlueJersey and deserve the admiration of progressives around the state. With so few flaming lefties working in print (can anyone name more than a couple?), BlueJersey has become invaluable -- our own state-based, new media version of The Nation or the Texas Monthly.

Good luck and keep up the good work.

Congrats & Good Luck Juan! (4.00 / 3)

Sincere congrats (4.00 / 3)
This new position is an honor, and this site has achieved the goals of promoting progressive political philosophy and helping keep our own Party honest.

On the "other site," don't mind the conservative trolls, of course, and I'll be seeing you over there. Currently, Katz and Torricelli represent the progressive voice; with respect to them, this is a marked improvement.

Collectively, let's keep Blue Jersey financially healthy and intellectually honest in Juan's absence. Good luck to Rosi and the rest of the team.

Congrats Juan.  Best of luck!

Juan, you will be a hero to New Jersey's LGBT community for the rest of our lives (4.00 / 4)
Under your leadership and of course with your incredible colleagues, Blue Jersey has played a wonderful, stunning and incomparably leading role at every twist and turn in my community's road to equality.  We all, very much including me, will be grateful to you forever.  Love ya.  Still don't know what the f--k your thesis is about, even after you described that fishy thing to me three times, but love ya always.

A real job, thats, well, OK. (4.00 / 1)
Good luck JM. Best.

Check out my 3 paragraph primer on Polywell Fusion.

For once (4.00 / 2)
I am completely speechless.  I don't know how to express how grateful I am to Juan for starting Blue Jersey.  His insight, his candor, his brilliance.  Like Rosi, I am also in awe of his wisdom, he's an amazing person.  Like a modern day Thomas Paine - he has brought understanding of weighty events to the masses - by simply giving voice to those with something to say.

I am in no way exaggerating when I say that if it were not for Juan, we may never have been able to mount a credible challenge to the corrupt Party Bosses that all too often run our government here in NJ.

There is no way I can express just how incredible an impact Juan has had on our public discourse, on our participation in democracy, on our hope to change things for the better here.

The Real Bergen Dems would not even exist without the support of Juan and Blue Jersey.

I cannot even begin to thank you, Juan.  You are a true patriot.  I know you will elevate the quality of any organization you work with in the future.    I can't wait to see what you do next because I know you will make history again.

Now, I better stop, before I get all weepy and my screen goes all blurry......

Forever in your debt,
Carol Hoernlein (carolh)

One Vote. Yours. It really does matter.

Best of luck at PolitickerNJ (4.00 / 3)
BlueJersey's loss, PolitickerNJ's gain.

I am sure that your deep study of the mechanics of fish has served you well in understanding the dynamics of New Jersey politics.

May the fish be with you, always.

Congratulations Juan! (4.00 / 1)
Best of luck at Politicker.com.  You'll be missed around here.

Thanks Juan (4.00 / 1)
Best of luck to you in your new role.

Wow, I'm speechless. (4.00 / 2)
And that sure doesn't happen often. I never even realized you were one of those elitist-ivy-league-Ph.D.-engineering types (and we all know how much I hate those people...).

Congrats, though, and good luck on everything.
