Andrews, Lautenberg support marriage equality; GSE endorses Lautenberg

by: Juan Melli

Tue Apr 22, 2008 at 12:57:00 PM EDT

In case anyone still doubts the value of primaries...Garden State Equality just announced their endorsement for US Senate, but the most interesting part to me is that both candidates expressed their support for marriage equality:
In extensive interviews with Garden State Equality's Board of Directors, both incumbent Senator Frank Lautenberg and Congressman Rob Andrews endorsed legislation to establish marriage equality in New Jersey, making this one of the few elections in American history where marriage equality has been endorsed by two competing candidates for statewide office.

To be sure, United States Senators vote on legislation in Washington, not Trenton.  But the support of these two esteemed public servants adds powerful momentum to our fight for marriage equality in New Jersey.

Senator Lautenberg said, "The government should get out of the business of telling same-sex couples in committed relationships that they can't marry.   Anything else is not equality."

Congressman Andrews said, "I support marriage equality.   The recent commission report on civil unions was pivotal in my thinking.  The civil union law has failed to give gay couples equal rights."

In the end, Garden State Equality endorsed Senator Lautenberg.
Without question, Rob Andrews is one of the most thoughtful members of the U.S. House.   We have heard him speak stirringly for LGBT civil rights on several occasions throughout his career.   He is backed by several pro-LGBT public officials, and we deeply respect their decision to support him.   If this were a different statewide election, we would be hard-pressed not to support him, too.

But if you were to ask advocacy organizations about their process for endorsing candidates, one principle would hold across the board.   An organization should endorse incumbents who have supported the community, absent a compelling reason to do otherwise.

Garden State Equality endorses Frank R. Lautenberg for reelection to the United States Senate.  Among all who have ever served in the U.S. Senate from New Jersey, he has been our greatest champion of equality.

GSE's full statement is here.

Who did GSE endorse?

What are their intentions about DOMA?

DOMA (0.00 / 0)
I updated my post with their endorsement. Also from their press release:
Senator Lautenberg and Congressman Andrews also favor repeal of the entire anti-LGBT Defense of Marriage Act - all sections, commendably.  Years ago, both men voted for DOMA, a rare misstep they each call a mistake today.

Why I support Lautenberg (4.00 / 1)
"An organization should endorse incumbents who have supported the community, absent a compelling reason to do otherwise."

That mirrors what I said early on -- Andrews is a good Congressman, but so is Lautenberg.  The only reasons I can see to go for Andrews are region and age, and I do not find either argument compelling enough to dump an incumbent.

Dumping an incumbent should be, in my opinion, done to remove a bad or weak legislator and not for non-policy or performance reasons.

Lautenberg is good on policy and good on performance.  Andrews is good on policy and good on performance.

All things being equal, I choose to side with the one who brung me.

You are kinder than I am (4.00 / 1)
I agree with your structural framework.

But I think Lautenberg's age would be enough reason to replace someone who is a farily reliable vote, but who provides little other than that vote. if we had a particulalry compelling candidate to replace him. But Andrews, though likely more attentive to constituent service than Lautenberg, would be a less reliable vote than the incumbent.

It is a federal issue (0.00 / 0)
I think with a Democratic President we could hope to revisit at least parts of DOMA.

I have to think of a witty signature about Frank LoBiondo

I wonder... (4.00 / 1)
...what on Earth this sentence means:

If this were a different statewide election, we would be hard-pressed not to support him, too.

This makes the Gov election in 2009 very interesting....
...would GSE supporter a challenger to Governor Corzine in the primary?
...would Corzine even run?

I guess time will tell...

Friendly statement (4.00 / 1)
Makes obvious that if Andrews wins the primary,  GSE will support him in the general.

Hi, everyone - a postscript (4.00 / 3)
Today, just before we released the statement, I called Andrews staffer Bill Caruso and Andrews consultant Steve Ayscue, and let me tell ya, rarely have two people ever been as gracious.  Those kinds of calls don't always go well, as you can imagine, but the Andrews camp said, we wish we had your endorsement but we respect your decision and if things turn out as we want in the primary, we want your support in the fall.   Very classy, and you can bet we will support the Democratic nominee proudly.

Andrews is doing a great job on Armed Services Committee getting rid of "Don't Ask Don't Tell" -- Except Don't Hold Your Breath. (0.00 / 0)
Andrews' Armed Services Committee is still bottling up Congressman Meehan's bill to eliminate Don't Ask Don't Tell.  Unfortunately under the Don't Ask Don't Tell policy, 57 army linguists who specialized in arabic languages have been discharged for merely being gay.  That's not to mention the thousands of gays who have been discharged and could help cut down on the necessity of forcing soldiers to return to duty under stop loss.  If Rob is in leadership on the Committee as he claims, what gives????  Obviously this isn't a priority for him.

To be fair (4.00 / 1)
Andrews is a co-sponsor of H.R. 1246 (Meehan's Military Readiness Enhancement Act).  While he is a member of the Armed Services Committee, he is not a member of the Military Personnel subcommittee where it has been referred.

great - if he's got any juice, he'll make it happen (0.00 / 0)
either Rob is a "leader" or not.  that stupid policy is endangering our security -- we have a shortage of 1) arab linguists; 2) military personnel.
