NJ Superdelegate Switches to Obama

by: Juan Melli

Thu Feb 14, 2008 at 12:48:58 PM EST

Update: Was this the beginning of a larger trend? The New York Times now reports that Rep. John Lewis is also switching his support to Obama. Rep. David Scott had switched earlier in the day.

Last week Christine "Roz" Samuels, who had previously endorsed Clinton, said she was undecided. She's now backing Obama. [campaign press release]:

Christine "Roz" Samuels, a superdelegate from Montclair, New Jersey, who was supporting Hillary Clinton announced she was now supporting Senator Barack Obama for President today, citing his ability to unite the country:

"I now support Barack Obama because he has brought about a new wave of hope and energy to this country, especially among our young people, who represent our future. People want to see change. Barack can help unite this country and help us embrace our diverse nation.

"I am also proud to support Senator Obama because he spoke clearly and forcefully against the war in Iraq from the start. I know he has the leadership to make sure we bring our young men and women home as quickly and carefully as possible, and ensure all Americans have access to affordable health care."

Samuels served as Secretary-Treasurer of the Newark Teachers' Union, Local 481 from 1995 until 2007. Samuels is a former Commissioner of the Essex County Board of Elections, a member of the Montclair Democratic Committee, and active in the Montclair and state-wide NAACP.

as Clinton's desperation leads her to alienate even more people.

To hell with what she wants, let's make Rosi Efthim the next DSC chair.

Its over. (0.00 / 0)
HRC would need something on the order of 70% of all remaining pledged delegates to have a narrow victory at the end of the Primary process. I think Obama will have about a 280+ delegate lead by the last primary.

Not so fast (0.00 / 0)

Obama needs 772 to win, but Hillary only needs to pick up about 500 to deny him that possibility.  It's much easier to block his nomination than it is to win it.  Basically, if she picks up 1/3 of the remaining delegates, she'll keep him short of the magic number.

To hell with what she wants, let's make Rosi Efthim the next DSC chair.

Now, we're getting back to Oujia Board territory. (0.00 / 0)
Let's see what happens over the next couple of weeks.

Looks like includes supers (0.00 / 0)
I thought it was

1116-989 w/o supers, before NM.

I dont either candidate will get to 2025.

The Upcoming Debates Will Be Telling.... (0.00 / 0)
.....the nomination is Obama's to lose.

If he copies Clinton's failed strategy of playing the cautious role of a "front runner" he'll blow it......and deservedly lose.

Without being perceived as negative, aggressive or "ungentlemanly" he'll need to go toe to toe with Clinton on any and all policy questions that come up.....he doesn't have to score a "knockout punch"  (in fact a case could be made that that would be negative) unless she really says something blatantly stupid (not likely)......he just needs to demonstrate that he's as up on the details of policy and the underlying ideas/values as she is.

This is a challenge Obama must meet head on to truly deserve the nomination.

Simply sitting on a lead and demanding that the Superdelegates endorse that lead isn't good enough to produce a winning candidate in November.

I want him tested and tempered in the crucible of a real series of productive/positive debates with Clinton.

If/When he wins the nomination such a process will have only strengthened him.

Meanwhile; if anyone wants to join me in signing MoveOn's petition on the "Superdelegates"; here's the place to go http://pol.moveon.org/pac/supe... .

He already did that (0.00 / 0)
Many pundits felt that Obama "failed" to score a knockout at the LA debate which was the first one with just the two of them.  It may have been that instead, like JFK, he just had to prove to be equal to the "frontrunner."  After all, even with the late NM results, Obama won more states, more delegates and more votes.

It really shows how desperate things are for the former "heir apparent" that she is calling for more debates which is the strategy of the one who is behind.

John Lewis is a huge get for Obama (0.00 / 0)

Samuels may have started it, but Lewis' switching allegiance suggests the tide is turning.

Obama (0.00 / 0)
really excites people.  I still can't get the picture out of my head of how many people brought their children to the Obama rally.  They really sensed we were witnessing a sweet moment in American history.  A moment they will be able to tell their great grandchildren about.  So many feel he will really unite us all - not just with each other, but with so many around the world who want to like us again.  We have had such a very long, sad decade, getting people to hope when they are in despair is no small feat.  I am disappointed though, that Hillary is trying to get the delegates from Florida and Michigan seated.  They knew the rules.  Many folks stayed home.  Unless they plan on redoing their primaries, seating Hillary's delegates from there would be cheating.

One Vote. Yours. It really does matter.
