Tom Kean Jr: "I will not be a candidate for Congressman Ferguson's seat"

by: Juan Melli

Mon Nov 19, 2007 at 05:08:29 PM EST

Statement from Tom Kean Jr:
For the last seven years, Congressman Ferguson has been a dedicated public servant who has served the 7th Congressional District with honor and distinction as a strong advocate for a more secure homeland and lower taxes.

I would like to thank the various party leaders, activists and supporters who have reached out to me and urged me to run for Congress.  However, I will not be a candidate for Congressman Ferguson's seat.

Juan Melli :: Tom Kean Jr: "I will not be a candidate for Congressman Ferguson's seat"
Eleven days ago the members of the upcoming Senate Republican Caucus unanimously selected me as Leader.  I am fully committed to working with them to change the direction of our state, to reform Trenton and to make New Jersey more affordable.

I look forward to working with the Republican nominee for Congressman Ferguson's seat with the confidence that our nominee will be victorious in November.

And yet (0.00 / 0)
Leonard Lance says: "I'm interested in exploring the possibility."

Ladies and gentlemen, we've officially arrived in Bizarro world.

I could learn to like Bizarro World. (0.00 / 0)
This of course would explain Leonard Lance's gentlemanly side-step in favor of Junior's Minority leader ascent in the Senate. Except of course, that that's the way Lance does everything.

Hunterdon County's going to be a very interesting place to be for the next year.

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

especially if... (0.00 / 0)
...there is more than one candidate from Hunterdon.  Any word yet from either Michael Doherty or Marcia Karrow?  I would be more concerned about Linda facing either Lance or Karrow than Doherty.

Doherty's Scott Garrett-like approach to politics would probably serve him well in a Republican primary, but he would probably scare away most independents as well as a significant portion of Union County's Republicans, who are slightly less Cro-Magnon than those in Hunterdon and Somerset.

How does Marcia Karrow regularly perform with Democratic and independent women in Hunterdon?

The thing that scares me most about Lance running is if he were to win, he would likely elevate either Doherty or Karrow to the State Senate, which would open up an Assembly seat for another Republican like them.

There is a Republican Councilman in New Providence named J. Brooke Hern, who used to be a Democrat and ran for this Congressional seat in 2000 and for an Assembly seat  in 2001.

I worked for him during his short-lived Congressional campaign.  He is one of the nicest people that I've ever met in politics and he is without a doubt the nicest Republican that I have ever known.

It would probably be very hard for him to win a Republican primary if he ran unless there was a very large field of candidates and he was able to register a significant number of Ds and Us as Republicans to vote in the primary, which wouldn't necessarily be an impossibility since Linda Stender is not going to face a primary challenge.

My guess is that Brooke won't run, especially if Jon Bramnick runs, because if Bramnick wins, he could be in line for Bramnick's Assembly seat.

Union County's going to be a very interesting place to be for the next year.

As much as I love being represented by Frank Pallone, despite the fact that he isn't a co-sponsor of HR 676 (what's up with that?), it would be more fun if Dunellen were in the 7th.

Ferguson's seat, Ferguson's Seat (4.00 / 1)
It isn't Ferguson's seat.  It belongs to the people of the 7th district.

That's the problem with Junior -- he has a sense of entitlement.

maybe he wants more time to distance himself from Bush (0.00 / 0)
Or, alternatively, he wants to give Bush more time to distance himself. Why run again when Bush could drag him down once again? A loss to Stender would be crushing for him. Perhaps better to wait until 2010 or 2012 or higher office. Or 2013 to run for Governor.
