Mike Ferguson Announces Retirement

by: Juan Melli

Mon Nov 19, 2007 at 12:36:14 PM EST

(This is AMAZING news. Now let's work to clear the field of the Republican front-runners by showing support for Linda with a donation on the Blue Jersey Act Blue page! - promoted by huntsu)

Let's clear the field of the first tier Republicans -- show how much support Linda Stender has by throwing her a few bucks on the Blue Jersey ActBlue page!

After barely defeating Linda Stender last year, Congressman Ferguson says he won't seek reelection in 2008. His announcement is surprising considering he's only 37. His statement:

"I am announcing today that I will not be a candidate for re-election to Congress in 2008.  I deeply appreciate the privilege the people of the 7th District have given me during the past seven years, and it has been my honor to represent them and our country.

"My wife, Maureen, and I have four children, the oldest of whom is 9 years old.  Since first being elected in 2000, I have strived to balance my responsibilities to my family and to my constituents.  I am indebted to Maureen, whose love, selflessness and patience allow me to meet my obligations to my constituents - from votes in Congress that extend past midnight to multiple trips each week between Washington and New Jersey and back again.  Being a representative in Congress is more meaningful than I had imagined, and I know that now is the right time to step away from public life to focus more on family life while our children are still young. [...]

"After winning re-election in an extraordinarily challenging year for Republicans in 2006 and then witnessing the impressive gains Republicans made in the 7th District just this month, I am confident that Republicans will nominate a candidate who will continue to reflect the mainstream values of voters in the district and be elected as our next representative in 2008.

(full statement below) The district has a partisan voting index of R+0.6, meaning it's a serious pickup opportunity for Democrats. PolitickerNJ speculates on next year's race:

Senate Minority Leader-designate Thomas Kean, Jr. becomes one of the most likely GOP candidates for the seat.  ....

Other possible GOP candidates include: Assembly Minority Whip Jon Bramnick, outgoing Senate Minority Leader Leonard Lance, State Sen.-elect Christopher Bateman, Bridgewater Mayor Patricia Flannery, and Franks, now the President of the Health Care Institute of New Jersey.

This is a huge pickup opportunity for Democrats. Help New Jersey send a woman to Congress. Support Linda Stender with a contribution today!

STATEMENT BY CONGRESSMAN FERGUSON

WASHINGTON - Congressman Mike Ferguson issued the following statement on Monday:

"Before being elected to Congress, I taught high school and college, and I earned a master's degree in education policy.  As I explore other opportunities, I hope to include some time in the classroom to share with students my passion for public service and encourage them to serve others and our country.

"I am proud of the many issues and accomplishments of which I have been a part during my four terms in Congress: from writing the Lifespan Respite Care law in 2006 to advocating successfully for tax relief, affordable prescription drugs and funding for first responders.

"Maureen and I were humbled to offer comfort to those 81 families in the 7th District who lost loved ones in the attacks of September 11, 2001, and I am honored to work with some of those same families who founded MyGoodDeed.org to turn the anniversary of that terrible day into a day of service to others.

"I am particularly proud to have worked on behalf of those New Jerseyans who have served our country - and for the members of our Armed Forces who this very day sacrifice to protect our nation. From securing overdue service medals to ensuring veterans receive the health care they deserve, the cause of our brave men and women in uniform is a critical part of my daily work - and central in my prayers.

"Perhaps closest to my heart, I have worked to be a voice for our country's children:  I have visited countless schools throughout the 7th District and talked with students about how government affects them and how they can affect government; I have championed special education and children's health care, and fought for tougher laws to combat Internet predators and unsafe imported toys.  And I have consistently stood up for our most vulnerable children, those who have yet to be born.

"I am a proud Republican, but I have also worked across party lines to bring people together and achieve results.  I am grateful for the friendships, both personal and professional, that I have developed among both Republicans and Democrats in New Jersey and Washington.

"I will energetically serve the balance of this my fourth term in the House.  I have long said that public service is an important and meaningful calling, and I still deeply believe that it is.  I will always be grateful for and appreciative of my congressional staff, each of whom shares my belief in public service and has helped me to ensure that every constituent in the 7th District receives the service and attention they deserve.

"Finally, for those who, beginning years ago, walked through the snow to deliver a yard sign to a neighbor, or addressed endless envelopes, or cold-called people you didn't know to talk about my campaign for Congress - I am humbled by your commitment, your sacrifice and your passion.  Without you, none of this would have been possible.

"From the bottom of my heart, I am thankful to God, and to my family, friends and supporters who have been instrumental in making these years of service both possible and fruitful."

The primaries just got a whole lot more interesting. (0.00 / 0)
Here we go. The self-funding candidates on both sides will come out of the woodwork.

I don't think Kean will run for the same reason Baroni's not running in '08 -- better prospects on the homefront.

Wow (4.00 / 2)
the internals must really stink.  Saxton and Fergie out - wonder how far LoBiondo and Smith are from realizing that their Presidente (and sucking up to him) has turned their constituents against them.

To hell with what she wants, let's make Rosi Efthim the next DSC chair.

Wow (0.00 / 0)
Didn't see that one coming.

Still will be a tough one if Kean, Lance, Bateman or Franks is the opponent.

One more announcement (0.00 / 0)
(in the form of a big player entering the 2nd District race against LoBiondo), and the Republicans are going to be in an all-out scramble for campaign cash that the RCCC just doesn't have for them.

don't hold your breath (0.00 / 0)
As great as it would be to see either Whelan or Van Drew challenge LoBiondo, I don't think that either will risk incurring the wrath of their constituents by running for another office a few months into their first term as State Senator.

If I am right and they don't run, I still think that Creed Pogue represents the best shot that Democrats in the 2nd CD have at victory in 2008.

I agree... (0.00 / 0)
the first ads out the gate would be about their personal ambition rather than constituent services. Two open seats is enough to concentrate on...especially when its equal playing field and, particularly in Saxton's district, chaos on the ground. If after we look good at 3 and 7 should we shoot for 2. Geesh..I go away on vacation and come back to a whole new blue jersey, literally!

This is going to be fun. (4.00 / 1)
I'm going to have to rethink that whole thing about not liking Mondays.

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

Don't forget NJ-4: Josh Zeitz (D) (4.00 / 4)
Two down, not too many more to go. Also, I want to say that Josh Zeitz in NJ-4 will be charging hard to beat Chris Smith (chair of the pro-life House caucus). Now that Saxton and Ferguson are out of the way and those seats will be ours, Josh will be among the high profile challengers with a real shot to win. We're almost ready with our website, but the placeholder is up at www.joshzeitz.com

I'm coordinating outreach to the netroots, so if you want to get involved contact me at ian.reifowitz@esc.edu

I wouldn't say (4.00 / 4)
that those seats are ours.  It makes them easier to take if we run good campaigns, but that's a far cry from a done deal.

My suggestion for building support for your candidate is to post a diary, not a comment.  Better yet - buy an ad and post a diary and come back on a regular basis.

To hell with what she wants, let's make Rosi Efthim the next DSC chair.

Fair enough. (4.00 / 1)
We're just getting started. I'm a volunteer, btw. But I've been lurking here for a while and will be posting more.

You are dreaming... (0.00 / 0)
a pleasant dream..but a dream nevertheless. Rodney, Chris and UNFORTUNATELY Scott are all in solid districts with solid bases that wouldn't switch. Chris and Rodney's people, in particular, adore them. Your best bet is to hope for an unexpected retirement like Saxton and Ferguson.

Ferguson Has No Grassroots Appeal....Zip Zero Nada (4.00 / 1)
That was the title of a post I made last year and it's still true.

He was eviscerated last time out and only "won" because of the momentum of incumbency, and the ongoing residual "support" for the Bush 9-11 terrorism ploys/games...and because Stender was underfunded and underestimated by the DCCC establishment.  (Also, Stender did not get nearly as dirty/nasty as she could have re Mike's shenanigans in DC bars).

Let us NOT assume that this will be a "fun" easy win.  Chances are that Ferguson's replacement will be a stronger candidate.

Obviously, this is good news and it enhances the likelihood of a Stender victory IF Linda stays true to her progressive/grass roots principles....as I'm 97% sure she will.

Buh-bye Mikey! (0.00 / 0)
Guess it's not enough to pretend to be a "moderate Republican" anymore. Are there any Wingnut Welfare sinecures of note in New Jersey, or have we lost him permanently to D.C.?

Rest of Ferg statement (0.00 / 0)
And  now I shall go off to my new job somewhere out there in Big Pharma Land.

Get Ready (0.00 / 0)
There are going to be national Dems and Republican in the state in the next year, huge ad buys in the New York and Philadelphia markets, and massive GOTV efforts. Though I'm not a native New Jerseyan, the 2008 House election seems to be one of those rare times when N.J. seats are actually in play; thankfully for us, these are Republican-held seats that, with the right motivation, message, and support, could put us at +2 in New Jersey alone. Despite what others have posted, I see Ferguson's retirement as a slight boost toward Stender's campaign, since she now isn't running against an incumbent, but George Bush, at least figuratively, will still be on the ballot against her.
