Blue Jersey interviews Governor Jon Corzine

by: Jay Lassiter

Wed Oct 24, 2007 at 01:20:22 PM EDT

(another tilt since, well, it's the Governor! --promoted (shamelessly) by Jay - promoted by Jay Lassiter)

For those of you who missed the teaser vid, we had a nice chat with Governor Corzine yesterday and covered a lot of ground: stem cells (and keeping NJ cutting edge); the NJ National Guard in Iraq (and what it meant for us stateside); and kids healthcare (S-CHIP, charity care).

To make it all tidy and YouTube-able, I had to split it in two bites, so make sure to check 'em both out.

Corzine's most intriguing replies came to questions about gay marriage equality and his near-fatal crash last summer.  Props to Blue Jersey regular 'Firstamend07' whose thoughtful question about the corrections budget was too good to leave out of the script!

(If you already saw the vlog trailer, simply fast forward a minute or so.)

Act two (aka the juicy bits) after the fold........

Rob, thanks for putting the audio up in a podcast and Jay thanks for getting the interview!

Thanks, Jay!

On a technical note, the second video had a lot of stuttering.  I don't know if my connection was on the blink or others experienced it too.

Regarding the National Guard call-up, it would be interesting if the Governor would explore his authority to halt a deployment of the National Guard in the event that it limits the state's ability to respond to a natural disaster.  Of course, having all of the Guard and its equipment overseas cannot but hurt the ability to respond here.

On marriage equality, there isn't going to be any major push from the Governor's office.  His points about the impact from DOMA should also be well-taken.

The process to come up with a winning question was very flawed.  There was a lot of sentiment to ask a question about bossism and reform, but the Executive Director of the NJDSC "trolled" all of them and that reduced their average.  That is why I suggested looking at total points.

Thanks again, Jay for your work!

re: feedback (0.00 / 0)
There were too few votes for the ratings of the questions to be statistically meaningful so Jay just picked one he thought was good. We'll have to come up with a better system next time, or maybe just more time. Suggestions are welcome.

Use total points instead of the rating average.

i didn't look at the ratings anyway, since i was in the field and not at my 'puter.
i chose the recitivism question since i was at the press events associated with his crime prevention rollout.

visiting a Camden halfway house (Hope Hall) and meeting the director and getting the feel for what really works to actually end these crazy cycles.  that's why i choose to ask about corrections (and not say, bossism.)  I guess i wanted to hear Corzine  say that more Hope Halls are in teh pipeline.  I figured that would be more likely than "why funny you should ask, Jay, i have been meaning to talk to the blogoshere about george Norcross.  this is going up on You Tube, right?"

NOT!

If you wanna take a look at the interview we did with the directior of Hope Hall

the director of Hope Hall wants nothing more than to spend our corrections $$ smarter.  listen to what she has to say and you'll know why curbing recitivism is as easy as emulating the Pat McKernans all over this state.

if you wanted... (0.00 / 0)
If you wanted not to have negativity, then the whole "I'd like to do it, but the budget is tight" stance isn't going to help it go away.  I am sure that if he had his way it would be fully funded.  The real question is, will it put the full funding in next year's budget?

About the Norcross comment, Monica Yant Kenney of the Inquirer already asked him about ethics reform and wrote a strong column about it (which was referenced in the News Roundup).  The column had a lot more readership than the video is going to get.

Thank you for asking the question.

He seems to know the problem but was being " politically correct " to his Department.

Governor Corzine is a Well Meaning Nice Guy (4.00 / 1)
That's the milquetoast impression I take from this interview.

I guess it's possible that he actually doesn't see or doesn't even understand the reality that every issue before him/us has a strong connection to pay to play, bossism and vested monied/powerful interests.

It's all fine and dandy to have generically good intentions and be a nice person mouthing those good intentions; but until the governor and the people of this state (and nation) begin to come to grips with the hard core of unpleasant realities underlying all our troubles; nothing much will fundamentally change.

Wishing for good things to happen is just the beginning of step one.

Seeing the obstacles and confronting them head on is the only effective way to truly make progress.  All else is denial and delusion at best; and manipulatively corrupt at worst.

If Governor Corzine chose to, he could lead a revolutionary transformation of NJ politics that would radically improve the lives of every good and decent resident of the state.

Telling us he's just another human being and that the world would go on as usual without him is nonsense; he's in a position to make a very large difference; if he chooses to try.

Jon Corzine spent a lot of time and money to obtain the power and position he now holds.  I wish he would use those assets more effectively.  No, I demand that he do so!!!

As many of you know, "power concedes nothing without a struggle"; I sense no real struggle with entrenched power from my governor; and that's a shame.

Glad he did the interview.
