What's the latest on Autism?

by: JRB

Wed Sep 26, 2007 at 11:44:59 AM EDT

Reading up on autism, I am floored by the national statistics. Via the Autism Society of America:
  • 1 in 150 births
  • 1 to 1.5 million Americans
  • Fastest-growing developmental disability
  • 10 - 17 % annual growth
  • Growth comparison during the 1990s:
    • U.S. population increase: 13%
    • Disabilities increase: 16%
    • Autism increase: 172%
  • $90 billion annual cost
  • 90% of costs are in adult services
  • Cost of lifelong care can be reduced by 2/3 with early diagnosis and intervention
  • In 10 years, the annual cost will be $200-400 billion
The widespread effects and the healthcare costs are staggering. A recent study shows that New Jersey, with approximately 1 in 94 children affected, has the highest autism rate in the nation.

A package of bills passed the Assembly back in March. Does Blue Jersey know what's going on with our state's efforts to diagnose, care for, research and prevent autism?

Environmental Causes of Autism (0.00 / 0)
There is all manner of evidence to suggest that there are environmental factors that cause Autism.

Yes, the research that focuses on the "bad genes" theory is one way to frame it.  After all, most kids exposed to environmental toxins in utero don't become Autistic.

Wouldn't it be better and cheaper to simply clean up our environment/vaccines/foods etc than to modify the human gene pool to make it/us more resistant to poisons?

I wonder if Autism is "on the rise" in Western Europe, or other parts of the world  in these same alarming numbers?

The latest is that the genes involved (4.00 / 1)
code for glutamate neurotransmission.  See my website http://www.msgtruth....  I have links on there.
I don't think we'll get very far very soon.  The pharmaceutical industry is coming up with glutamate blocking drugs at the same time the food industry is putting more glutamate into the foods these kids eat.  And so, the drug and food industries are both making out like bandits.

I think the actual solution based on the scientific evidence would be to:

1)spread out vaccinations
2) remove glutamate from the vaccines,
3)carefully watch the glutamate intake of these kids till the age of seven - like we do for kids with PKU, and
4) ban MSG from foods targeted to those with the genes for autism.
5) check if those with Alzheimers and Parkinsons have some of the same genes but experienced damage AFTER the brains were hardwired
6) Remove MSG from the diets in nursing homes and from liquid diets in hospitals

Note that both gluten and casein as well as vaccines all contain significant amounts of free glutamic acid which autistic children WILL HAVE TROUBLE WITH based on the latest genome study.

Big Pharma would rather TREAT a disease with expensive drugs than actually ever just PREVENT it in the first place.

I don't know how many elected officials who accept money from the Pharmaceutical industry here in NJ would be willing to actually take any of these actions.

One Vote. Yours. It really does matter.
