NJ's Popularity Contest

by: Juan Melli

Wed Aug 15, 2007 at 10:27:34 AM EDT

Garden State Equality recently commissioned John Zogby to conduct a poll on LGBTI rights in New Jersey. One of the unrelated poll questions, was to identify which public figures New Jersey residents like or dislike.
Q: "I am going to read to you a list of public figures. Regardless of whether or not you agree with them on the issues or how well they have performed their job while in office, please tell me for each if you personally like them. For example, would he or she be the kind of person you think you would like to have a cup of coffee with?"

LikeDislikeNot Sure
NYC Mayor Mike Bloomberg71 18 11%
Former President Bill Clinton67 28 5%
Senate President Dick Codey65 20 15%
Governor Jon Corzine64 27 9%
Former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani64 31 5%
Former Vice President Al Gore64 33 3%
U.S. Senator Frank Lautenberg56 30 14%
U.S. Senator Hillary Clinton56 40 3%
State Senator Tom Kean, Jr.45 30 25%
U.S. Senator Bob Menendez45 35 20%
President George W. Bush40 58 2%
Prosecutor Chris Christie26 13 61%
Assembly Speaker Joe Roberts17 20 63%

Not surprisingly, George Bush and Hillary Clinton elicit pretty strong negative visceral reactions from people. Everyone has made up their mind on whether or not they like them, though Clinton's numbers are nearly the reverse of Bush's. We know Bush isn't popular here, but 58% of New Jersey residents wouldn't want to even have a cup of coffee with the leader of the free world. Can't say I blame them.

63% Unsure of Christie? Wow. (0.00 / 0)
Corzine, who is Governor and has been taking a beating from the Republicans, has a 64% approval rating and a 37% positive differential.

Christie, who is US Attorney and is lauded in the press as the greatest thing on two legs, has only a 26% approval and 13% differential.

And Christie is the Republican savior.  Ha!

Christie who? (0.00 / 0)
I'm guessing that most folks just don't know who their US Attorney is.

Bloomberg, Guilani and Gore (0.00 / 0)
Kinda puts me in mind of an old Dion song ... be that as it may, it's very ... something ... that two undeclared candidates and the Republican frontrunner all post high popularity numbers than the putative Democratic frontrunner ... though her husband's doing very well, thank you. At least Hillary IS in the upper half of the positive column. As for Chris Christie -- damned if I know. Could Carton 'n' Rossi really have been so influential if their most golden boy -- the man Carton called Bush's one gift to NJ -- has positive ratings BELOW the current occupant of the White House? As for having coffee with 43, well ... I will when he attends a military funeral. He's only missed 3,700 of them in seven years ... I'm sure he'll find the time soon.

I was surprised (0.00 / 0)
that Hillary Clinton did so well in this poll, 56 to 40 percent.  Because the conventional wisdom is - or was - that she's not personally likeable, and likeability is what this question tested... not job performance or where she stands on the issues.

In the interests of full disclosure, I personally, not wearing my Garden State Equality hat but only as an individual, have endorsed Hillary for President.
