The Soft Bigotry of Low Expectations

by: Juan Melli

Mon Jul 31, 2006 at 12:06:46 PM EDT

From Al Karmen at the Washington Post.
Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.), at the White House this spring for a meeting with other senators to discuss immigration with President Bush, was surprised when Bush approached him as the meeting broke up and observed: "Senator Martinez, you've been very quiet."

"That's Martinez," Menendez said, pointing to Mel Martinez -- Florida's junior senator and Bush's former secretary of housing and urban development.

"I'm Menendez."

Bush turned bright red, we're told. Señor Mayor?

This is not actually that much of a racial statement at all in my opinion.

It shows how much time Bush invests thinking about other people, period.

Just saying we've set the bar too low for Bush. He doesn't even know who his own cabinet members are.

oh no, I get it. (0.00 / 0)
though I wouldn't write it off to lack of intellegence.  I really think its a deep-rooted selfishness, the guy just doesn't care about other people all that much whether they are near him or far away.

Clinton would have called him Bob and known what his grandson's name was too.

Maybe it's a nickname? (0.00 / 0)
Bush is famous for giving folks nicknames. Maybe Martinez is his playful name for Bob?

Ha! (0.00 / 0)
So, if a tall Mexican woman walked into the Oval Office, I assume you'd hear:

"Howdy Miss Stretchy Martinez!"

let's hope... (4.00 / 2)
...your hypothetical tall mexican woman weren't blind, then it would be "take off your glassses senorita stretchy martinez."

If Anyone Else Had Made This Mistake (0.00 / 0)
I'd say give the guy a break, we're all human...

In Bush's case we have a sitting President directly and indirectly responsible for the deaths and sufferings of millions of human beings and generally screwing up the whole world...need I say more.

for anyone who's ever typed the word... (0.00 / 0)
M-E-N-E-N-D-E-z knows how  tough it is.  It's almost as bad as A-S-S-E-M-B-L-Y-W-O-M-A-N- L-I-N-D-A-S-T-E-N-D-E-R.

but bush wasn't at a keyboard, he was face to face.  and it's easy to make such mistakes when you're as self-absorbed as our president is.

He blushed because he's embarrassed.  He's embarrased because he's an idiot. I'd have blushed too.

activist for hire.

Reagan forgot (0.00 / 0)
The name and face of his HUD Secretary and asked him to fetch him a drink mistaking him for a waiter. Bush did remember the name started with an M and ended in Z. That's pretty good for a brain damaged dolt with loose associations and thought disorders. So when is everyone on this blog getting rendered to Jordan or Egypt?

Restore democracy and the Constitution for which it stands.

Reagan had Alzheimer's... (0.00 / 0)
what's Bush's excuse?

Actually, you take the Reagan and Bush II elections and you see why I just can't support Republican candidates.  It has nothing to do with progressive politics.  The GOP likes to run candidates for president who have mental disabilities that make them usuitable for the office.
