  • Federal immigration officials are cracking down on NJ businesses that hire illegal immigrants.
  • Transportation

  • Yesterday, workers broke ground on a $2.7 billion turnpike expansion project in Central Jersey.
  • School vouchers

  • A rally for school vouchers in Newark drew 40 people yesterday.
  • Sports betting

  • Governor Corzine is joining Ray Lesniak's sports betting lawsuit.
  • Judiciary

  • An NJ superior court judge ruled that a blogger from Washington state is not protected from slander lawsuits by reporter shield laws.

  • Chief Justice Stu Rabner promoted three Superior Court judges to the state Appellate Court.
  • Newark

  • Newark's unemployment rate jumped from 12.7% to 13.5% in May.
  • Fireworks

  • Police will be on the lookout for people violating fireworks posession laws this wekend.
  • Lousy weather

  • Service on the Peapack and Gladstone Branch was suspended between Bernardsville and Summit during the morning rush yesterday because a downed tree damaged the overhead electrical wires.

    It'd be one thing for future lottery winners to whine... but we just invented a tax retroactively, solely because we could.
    Retroactive taxation, (especially new taxation, when the taxpayer could not have expected any level of taxes) is wrong. I bet in some cases that money has already been spent.

    Seems to me the thinking was, wrong or right, this only effects a few hundred (or maybe 1000) people and what are they going to do about it...

    it would be interesting to take a poll (0.00 / 0)
    of lottery players to see how many think lottery winnings are tax free.  I doubt very money people think lottery winnings should or are tax free -- though of course you have a point about how people who won and were advised otherwise earlier this year could complain.
