7 NJ Sponsors of ENDA legislation

by: Babs NJSD

Wed Jun 24, 2009 at 11:05:12 PM EDT

Thanks for keeping us up to date on ENDA, Babs. I'm calling both Rep. Pascrell and Rep. Adler by the end of the day. Hope I have company - - Rosi

Today, Representative Barney Frank, joined by Reps. Tammy Baldwin and Jared Polis, introduced the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), a bill which would protect lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender employees from workplace discrimination. The bill would add sexual orientation and gender identity to existing federal employment non-discrimination laws

The bill has 121 original co-sponsors including seven from New Jersey. They are Rob Andrews D-1, Frank Pallone D-6, Leonard Lance R-7, Steve Rothman D-9, Donald Payne D-10, Rush Holt D-12, and Albio Sires D-13. Noticeably absent on the bill were both John Adler D-3 and Bill Pascrell D-8.

I would have hoped that ALL the NJ Democrats would have signed on to this. For those folks in the districts where their Congressmen signed on, it would be nice to thank them. I would ask those folks whose Reps did not do so, and especially folks here who have a relationship with Adler and Pascrell, please urge, push them to co-sponsor!

Both Adler and Pascrell signed on Thursday afternoon

Thank you to all that called!

NJ House Democrats now 100% on ENDA!

I believe that Rob Andrews will be holding hearings in his subcommittee and it is expected to pass handily in the House.

The question mark is regarding the Senate because with Ted Kennedy being ill, we don't know who will step forward to really move it since Majority Leader Reid is ... (fill in the blank!)

Great news, Babs. (0.00 / 0)
Keep it coming.

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

when are the hearings Babs and which committee we talking here?

Rob Andrews Chair of subcommittee (0.00 / 0)
I would think it's the same one that held hearings on the transgender discrimination last May, the Health, Employment, Labor, and Pensions Subcommittee. I attended those hearings and I had to curb my enthusiasm as the Congressman ripped into a Harvard trained lawyer for the wing nuts for their "illogical" assertions.

Andrews' committee staffer to contact is Carlos Fenwick, as things progress, he will be the one. Would be nice if media gave it max coverage. It would help all LGBT people come out of the closet, and help the folks with the highest rate of unemployment, the gender variant gays and lesbians and the transgenders.

By the way, one of the transpeople who testified that day was hired by Barney Frank as a staffer and is now involved in promoting that bill and health care legislation.

I haven't confirmed this  with Cong. Andrews, but it was mentioned by folks in DC involved with the bill and it makes sense. No date has been set, but based upon my sense of the process and general time-lines that have been mentioned, hearings probably mid-late September and a vote in the early fall.

Thanks Babs.... (0.00 / 0)
... i will contact Andrews' office and see if we can get a blogger in to archive the proceedings.... at least we can make waves 'round the blogoshere 'till the Old Media takes the story.  (anyone in BJland in the mood for a field trip.)

it seems like the two NJ congressmen with the subComm chairs (Pallone and Andrews) are at the center of EVERYTHING these days.....

and i LOVE IT.

thanks John (4.00 / 1)
someone must have reminded Adler that his election campaign had enough gays on board to staff its own pride float!!

even gay groups like Garden State Equality and Human Rights Campaign gave staffers time off to come volunteer for the last weeks of the effort.

so for him to get on board is great.  and it's affirming to the residents on his district who are LGBT.....as well as to their families.
