Mapchanging the wrong way

Back when I was a kid, you could walk halfway across Texas without finding anyone who would admit to being a Republican.  But years of mismanagement by the consensus winner of "worst run state party" and misbehavior by office-holders turned a solid Democratic state into one where Republicans don't have to seriously defend any of the twenty or so media centers.  It didn't just happen and it wasn't because Republicans were so smart.  It was because Democrats were so stupid...

Step one in the Democratic Downfall was a lack of senior Democrats recruiting young talent.  Ambitious men and women were stymied on the way up - so they found a way up on the other side.  Step two was a series of state and federal corruption busts that exposed a large number of office-holders as robber-barons.  That was enough - a Texas Two-step based entirely on a stupid conception that Texas Democrats simply could not lose.

I was reminded of that stupidity when I saw this clip on ABC News:

I like Frank Lautenberg.  He's done a world of good for New Jersey and for the country.  But the incredible smugness and self-satisfied assurance in such a comment just turns my stomach.  Sure, Brian Ross may describe it as "his tongue apparently in his cheek".  That doesn't matter.  No one will see where his tongue is if they think his cheek is permanently attached to the rear-end of the nearest high-dollar lobbyist.

It's an amateur mistake.  But Lautenberg isn't an amateur.  I'm hoping for the best - that he'll just claim he was so drunk he could barely stand.
