Public has a right to know about Ex-Gov rides

by: Jason Springer

Thu Jul 24, 2008 at 03:22:01 PM EDT

After the car accident involving Governor Corzine, the Record requested more information about state resources being used for current and former dignitaries:
The request was prompted after a report issued after Gov. Jon S. Corzine's near-fatal car crash last year said the protection unit also had provided more than 300 rides to others.
At the time, the request was denied by the state citing security risks.  Today a Judge ruled that the state must comply with the request:
New Jersey taxpayers are entitled to know how the state's six former governors and other dignitaries use state police bodyguards and drivers.

A judge said the public's right to know outweighs the state's argument that the information would pose a security risk.

The Attorney General's office now has 30 days to release the information.
