Conservatives decimate police departments

by: Hopeful

Thu May 22, 2008 at 12:34:24 AM EDT

Thanks to Republicans in Congress -- including all six representing New Jersey -- we'll have shorthanded police departments for the next year:

As many as 200 law enforcement officers from New Jersey will deploy to Iraq in the fall as part of the state's largest combat mobilization of military reservists since World War II, affecting police departments statewide.

It's just one more cost of our hundred year occupation of Iraq: Looking at gas prices, deficits, inflation and soon crime, we are paying directly and indirectly for the Republicans' stubborn belief that fantasies in Iraq are more important than real Americans.  Frank LoBiondo may say "Republicans have been slammed with a 2-by-4," but they and McCain promise more of the same.

If you're wondering, the police staying here face a tough situation with no easy solutions:

Civil service rules, tight budgets and the specialized training required to become an officer makes the hiring of temporary help all but impossible in most cases.

"We will not fill positions. We will work short-handed," said Union County Sheriff Ralph Froelich, whose department will be without Sgt. Cliff Meros, a supervisor in the fugitive squad and a staff sergeant with a National Guard infantry unit that mobilizes next month for a year in Iraq.

Yeah, I know the police are not literally losing one in ten.

Chris Christie forced a company to endow a professorship at the law school he went to.
