Why Joe Vas Lost

by: Thurman Hart

Thu May 15, 2008 at 10:25:12 PM EDT

Earlier this week, Jeff Gardner spoke briefly about The Jersey Comeback.  It's great that politicians can get a second chance - everyone deserves that much.  But here's something to think about before launching a comeback - you have to first go away.

When I first heard of Joe Vas, he was running for the seat just vacated by now-Senator Bob Menendez.  A lot of my friends who were so involved in battling the myriad mini-machines of Hudson County flocked to his side - convinced that his sweet words were sincere and that he would break the back of the Hudson County machine.

Like most fairy tales, this one didn't translate into reality so well.  Machines are machines because they are not easily broken.  And the fairy god-father, in this case, had more than just feet made of clay.

Thurman Hart :: Why Joe Vas Lost
Vas had a shot against Albio Sires.  I've heard a few stories about Sires and none of them portray him in a favorable light.  But if he isn't going to get a MacArthur Genius Grant anytime soon, he beat Vas fair and square - even if Vas was the one that didn't figure out he needed to file for two elections (an unexpired term and a new term).

As I recall, Vas built his entire campaign on two issues.  One: He wasn't part of the corrupt Hudson County machine - which says nothing about what machine he may or may not have ever been a part of (it also provided Tom Kean, Jr with a lot of fertile ground to use against Menendez).  Two: He was a fiscal genius (this claim actually predates his run for Congress):

Under Mayor Vas, Perth Amboy has not experienced a municipal tax increase in seven consecutive years. Mayor Vas cut spending and reduced the workforce to balance the city's budget. Vas created an economic stimulus package for local businesses, successfully lobbied for Urban Enterprise Zone designation, established a Special Improvement District to revitalize the downtown area, and attracted $1 billion of private development to transform Perth Amboy's waterfront.

Yeah.  That sounded real good to the people in Hudson County.  Unfortunately for the people of Perth Amboy, they had to wake up to find the dream was really a nightmare.  There aren't a lot of politicians that can make me write a comparison that could be flattering to Jerramiah Healy, but this move justified it.

In a way, the results in Perth Amboy were a complete surprise, but in another they were completely predictable.  An incumbent is always the favorite, especially when they outspend their grassroots opponent five-to-one.  If you read between the lines, Wilda Diaz won because of two things.  One: she worked her butt off - she was out shaking hands and meeting people and asking for their vote.  Two: Vas was a phony and his veneer wore off - he was a phony on the tax issue and he was a phony on the Puerto Rican Day Parade (refusing to permit the parade, then renaming a street to smooth things over).

The thing that New Jersey is waking up to is that the best way to get results from our political system is to hold our political leaders accountable.  I wouldn't say we've had a wave of people booting tired old politicos out of office, but we have a start.  We are showing that we want true, authentic leadership and that we will hold our elected officials accountable.  We are showing that reform is more than a campaign slogan.

Will commit political science for food.

agree to disagree (4.00 / 1)
Thurman - I agree with a lot of what your saying and naturally i disagree (being Joe Vas' very young campaign manager for that 2006 congressional race)

Vas was authentic and he was an anti-machine candidate - I don't think groups like DFA, Sierra Club, Garden State Equality, Stonewall Dems and others would have endorsed Vas if they didn't see him as authentic.

History will show Joe Vas was one of the greatest mayors the city of Perth Amboy had - He completely revitalized   the city from a city of high poverty and crime to a city of great economic prosperity. In his 18 years, he had only 3 or 4 tax increases, which is much lower than other mayors of cities if you look in comparison - Unfort. for Vas, 2 of them came in the last 3 years.

He only gave one tax abatement in the city for a good reason to. His politics were much different than those of Hudson County machine....but more important than that, his values were so much different than Albio Sires, as far as history as Albio being a former Republican, who was a congressional candidate, corruption in his city with his Chief of Staff going to prison, his opposition to the stem cell research, cronyism in the city and countless other issues etc. - there was a clear contrast (although on a side note, in his 2 years in congress, I think Albio Sires has been a terrific congressman with a great record, which I hope is a very long tenure for him in Congress)

Vas lost in 2006 simply because of the low turnout and power of the line. The only county he had the line in was Middlesex, where he won with almost 80% of the vote, even though Carteret's Mayor Dan Reinman, supported Sires. Vas didn't even have the support of his runningmates. He was an outsider, not from Hudson County, and having the county line is just so powerful in Hudson and Essex Counties unless you already have a big political machine like Brian Stack. Plus Vas was outspent 2 to 1. And Vas had a terrible GOTV operation (partially my fault since it was my first large-scale campaign) while Sires had an amazing GOTV operation with Lesniak getting out big numbers for him in Union, Adubato getting out big numbers for him in Essex, Healy getting out big numbers for him in Jersey City, Stack getting out big numbers for him in Union City, Turner getting out big numbers for him in West New York/Weehakwen, Sacco getting out big numbers in North Bergen, Roberts with flawless operation in Hoboken, Delldonne with a great election day operation in Guttenberg and Joe Doria working a great election day operation in Bayonne.

Who did Vas have for him on his election day operation? Chiappone in Bayonne (where Vas got 42%), Fulop in his ward where we still lost and Cunningham who didn't do much of an operation in the African American districts.

There really was no comparison as far as GOTV which is why Vas lost handidly.

Was Vas perfect? far from it, but at the time he was much better than Albio Sires on many issues and in general was an authentic and honest man...and it was a true anti-machine camapaign, one of the few NJ has ever seen at such a large level, Vas had slates in every town and county against local machine and ran a campaign on the danger of political bosses....and I know he believed it....but he wasn't able to get enough traction among progressives and non-machine voting Democrats.

I haven't seen Joe Vas in close to a year, but from talking around I think he lost his mayoral campaign for 4 reasons.

1) His clashing with the Puerto Rican community which turned out to be a big backlash if you look at the results.

2) Taxes, which he hasn't handled well in recent years and hasn't been as straightforward about it when he should have.

3) Voters wanted a change. Vas hasn't always been good about confrontation and hasn't always handled disenting voices in the city the right way.

4) a developer, who I'll keep nameless, and best friend of Vas since childhood (Vas is godfather to his kids) and a prime backer of his campaign turned on him 2 months ago over Vas refusing to make land available for welfare only. That developer worked hard for Diaz.

Given all that, I know Mayor-Elect Diaz and her sister and I as many friends of Vas wish them well - They have some very big shoes to fill as Joe Vas was a fantastic mayor and turned around an entire city - It may have been time for a change in the city, but its unfort. it ended like that. Vas leaves Diaz with a big surplus so I'm curious to see if she thinks this as easy as it looks but I guess time will tell.

I'm not sure how far Vas is going to go. He still controls the Perth Amboy Democratic Organization and is still an assemblyman, similar to how the Edison Democrats still have control despite Jun Choi still being mayor.

Not So Sure You Are in Such Broad Disagreement... (0.00 / 0)
First, thanks for you informative 'counteranalysis".

As it turns out, once again, things aren't black and white; there are gradations and multifactorial complications.

I find it interesting that you show so much respect for Albio Sires.   Yes he's made some good votes in Congress; but wouldn't it be "nice" if he were to "turn states evidence" and really go after all of the fundamentally illicit machine chicanery that passes for governance in Hudson County.

Does anyone seriously doubt that all manner of legalized and illegal corruption permeates virtually every department, municipality, and contract in Hudson/Bergen/Essex counties?

There's a reason turnout is so low in elections.   The last thing the people who profit from the status quo want is an energized/informed/active citizenry.

Will Wilda Diaz really make a difference?   Will she really reform government in Perth Amboy?   Or will she become  just as beholden to the "money people" who provide the funds and the connections for campaigns?

Unless we get 100% public financing and real law enforcement/draconian punishments for all degrees of public/private sector malfeasance nothing much will change in NJ.

I show respect for Albio Sires as far his record during the past 2 years in Congress - He voted against funding the war last year and has generally been on the right side of progressives during his first term

Whenever I have an issue i am lobbying, his Washington DC staff has been far better than any other member of the NJ Democratic delegation as far as having regular meetings and followups.

Of course, I have issues with what he did as Mayor of West New York and as Assembly Speaker and of course his leadership in the Hudson County GOP during the 1980's....but those issues aren't relevant to me anymore - What is relevant is what he has done since he has entered Congress and I think he was an effective congressman in his first term.

Past Is Prologue... (0.00 / 0)
...Sires wasn't born two years ago.  :-)

If push comes to shove on an issue that were to impact the Hudson County machines; it would be interesting to see how Sires votes.

Also, I wonder what his "earmarks" were/are?

Hudson County is a particularly odiferous cesspool of corruption (most of it perfectly "legal" no doubt ;-)

Meanwhile realpolitik dictates that you work with what you have; I understand.

On the other hand, you should actively join in on an alternative vision/mission.

All the garbage can be thrown out and all the dirt can be cleaned up.

50,000 truly ACTIVE and INFORMED citizens co-operating could lead NJ to a complete transformation.

The corrupt forces of the status quo would like y'all to believe they are invincible; but the truth is they are weak cowardly bullies who can't stand up to the bright light of intense scrutiny.   Kind of like Dracula.

that incumbents should take their opponents seriously between now & the June primary. Vas wasn't the only surprise on Tuesday. This is  shaping up as a "change" kind of year.
