| Assembly Speaker Joe Roberts responded to the California Supreme Court's ruling for marriage equality reaffirming that "the granting of full marriage equality to New Jersey's same-sex couples is simply a question of 'when,' not 'if.'"
He added, "In the year since New Jersey's civil union law took effect the sky has not fallen in and the meaning of marriage for opposite-sex couples has not been eroded. Those realizations make it all the more likely that New Jersey will ultimately be the first state to legislatively reach the inevitable conclusion that marriage is a right that should be enjoyed by all residents."
That was also the view of Steven Goldstein, chairman of Garden State Equality who said "California is so big and so impactful on the rest of the nation, what happens in California won't stay in California, and that's great for equality. The California decision will have a particular impact on New Jersey, where we are closer than ever to becoming the first state in American history to enact marriage equality through legislation." |
