Municipal elections
  • In the night's biggest upset, Community activist Wilda Diaz thrashed Perth Amboy Mayor Joe Vas by nearly 1,200 votes.  Vas is a dual officeholder.

  • Eldridge Hawkins won the six-way race for Mayor in Orange, thanks in part to the support of Senator Dick Codey and Newark Mayor Cory Booker.

  • Jerry Fried was elected mayor of Montclair in a very low turnout election.

  • Former Senate President Carmen Orechio lost his seat on the Nutley Board of Commissioners by just 29 votes after serving 40 years on the board.

  • Incumbents fell in local elections in Vineland and Ventnor.

  • Voters in Teaneck bounced a Ferriero lackey from office, while Paul Aronsohn earned a seat on the Ridgewood Borough Council.
  • Congressional elections

  • Frank Lautenberg attacks Andrews for earmarking money for Rutgers Law School while his wife was a dean there.

  • After a stunning upset in Mississippi, New Jersey Republicans from "safe" districts should start worrying.

  • Senator Bob Menedez takes a vacation from reality, suggesting that Obama is unelectable.

  • Flashback to 2005: Bob Menendez is not electable.
  • Clean elections

  • A broad coalition of civic and progressive groups wants more public financing of elections in 2009.
  • Budget

  • Corzine administration officials must be gleeful about the $533 million in unexpected revenue the state will take in.

  • The State Deparment of Agriculture will survive this years round of budget cuts and the parks will stay open this summer, says Corzine.
  • Water tax

  • The Press of Atlantic City weighs in favorably on Sen. Robert Smith's water tax/open space funding proposal.
  • School district says no to drug testing

  • The Sparta School District has scrapped a proposed random drug testing program.
  • Environment

    BurlCo municipal results (0.00 / 0)
In Delran, Democrats sweep the mayorship and two council seats in what the Inquirer calls a "stunning victory"
    in a GOP stronghold.

Besides that, there's a new council member in Medford Lakes, and the Mt. Holly incumbents won. Political affiliation unknown, at least to me.

    Delran (3.50 / 2)
What was stunning was the comfortable victory despite being outspent 4-1.  Of course, it is possible (probable?) that some later money came in to even the scales a little.

It is interesting how some places get termed "GOP strongholds."  Menendez wins with 53%, Corzine wins with 54% and Kerry wins with 53%.  I wish I was in a "GOP stronghold" like that.  :-)

    There's a diary in there somewhere (4.00 / 1)
I love hearing about "GOP strongholds" that vote democratic.

My nearest one is Ridgewood - I've been approached while flyering in town and told I was wasting my time campaigning for a democrat there because it was so solidly Republican.

This despite wins there by Kerry, Corzine, Menendez, and both Wolfe '04 and Aronsohn '06 for Congress!

That's my kind of GOP stronghold too!

    So long, Joe Vas (4.00 / 1)
I watched Joe Vas ignore his town so he could challenge Albio Sires for the 13th CD seat.  I'm not necessarily a fan of Sires, but I'm glad to see Joe kicked in the pants.  Let this be a lesson: If you ignore your responsiblities for too long (like a dozen years or so) people start to notice.
