NJ5 is on the table

by: Hopeful

Tue May 13, 2008 at 10:23:49 PM EDT

The media just called the special election in Mississippi's 1st Congressional District for Democrat Travis Childers.  It has a Cook PVI Index of R+10, since Bush got over 60% of the vote. We already knew Democrats have an excellent chance in NJ3 and NJ7, but NJ5's Scott Garrett is way too far to the right to represent New Jersey, and this is the year he can be beaten.

three-for-three (0.00 / 0)
I was also watching this election result between the W.V. returns; this result shouldn't be underestimated, as a Democrat won in very Bush-friendly territory. With Foster's win of Haster's seat, Cayonoux (sp) in La., and Childers victory in Miss., that's three red-to-blue congressional victories in three tries.

So, yes, NJ-05 is probably in play to some degree; what about NJ-02, or am I just being optimistic?

well, I wouldn't go that far (0.00 / 0)
I think LoBiondo is a formidable incumbent, and I wouldn't be optimistic at all unless some new facts come to light.  Maybe if this challenger really raises a million dollars, but even then he'd could be outspent.

Chris Christie forced a company to endow a professorship at the law school he went to.

Repub special election losers in Miss tonight, Louisianna (0.00 / 0)
last week...openly RAN AGAINST BARACK OBAMA and Dem Congressional candidates in staunchly republican Mississsippi and Louisianna. Both failed miserably...Tonight, Barack Obama has a new full proof argument to take to the super delegates...Republicans running against me in the reddest of red congressional districts can't beat me and candidates who stood for me WON!

Yes, this can be a transformational election.

Yes Barack Obama can be a transformational president who comes into office with long coattails!!!

Yes this can be Scott Garrett and Rodney Frelinghuysen's last year in office!

We have a choice.  We can choose believe these things are possible and contribute to their manifestation or we can choose to dwell in the virtually hopeless realm of "the conventional wisdom".

As I've been saying here for years now; we have the power to make things change for the better.

To quote Sponge Bob (and that guy running for president)...

"Can We Do It?    Yes We Can!

PS

Hey, If the Giants can win the Superbowl; all things are possible!  ;-)

As the semi-official aging curmudgeon of NJ5/West... (4.00 / 1)
I want to believe that divesting us of Garrett is possible and could well and truly happen. I heard something just today that told me what I already know: the guy is a travesty. I cannot go into any detail, but suffice to say that he just does not give $0.02 about the real and substantive issues facing us out here. His whole constituency consists of Alpine and people working on getting their thumbs to oppose.

That said, please, oh please...candidates, come out to play. Early and often. Let the Joe and Jane Sixpacks out here in CountryMouseLand know you exist and that you know and understand the real, on-the-ground issues out here. You are going to have to bust through many, many years of rote and reflexive voting for Repubs out here, but it can be done. You just have to understand the issues and how to address them to the people out here.

But you won't cut through on that by coming out here only 5 times in whe whole campaign. It's gonna take some real work and a real organization with a real ground game, an understanding of The County that Time and The NJDSC Forgot and learn to speak the language.

And no, in spite of the rumors, that language is not a derivative of Original Neanderthalian.

Note: Bring some Hispanic and African-American staffers into the mix out here. The demographics in Hackettstown, Washington and Phillipsburg are starting to look a lot more like Newark than you might think.

The nom de plume has a long and distinguished history.
