Enough is Enough: Let's Talk Secession

by: Thurman Hart

Fri May 09, 2008 at 02:59:38 PM EDT

The experience of the last few weeks has been enough to convince me - North Jersey and South Jersey just can't get along.  North Jerseyans are a bunch of wannabe New Yorkers who sip lattes and cheer the Giants and Yankees and can't even find Salem County on the map.  South Jersey is full of redneck wannabe Pennsyl-tuckians who cheer the Eagles and Phillies and think Hoboken is a neighborhood in Manhattan.  It's time we call the whole thing off before people get hurt.

Fortunately, Florida is showing us how to deal with this in a mature fashion - secession.

Furious at what they call no respect from state leaders when it comes to collecting and spending their own money, the North Lauderdale City Commission passed a resolution requesting that Florida be divided into two states: North Florida and South Florida with the boundary line from Palm Beach County down through Monroe County.

I'm convinced.  All we need to do is figure out what to do with the Brunswicks and we can split.  Oh, and we need names.  North Jersey and South Jersey are just so...common.

On the other hand, the Orlando Sentinel does a great job of highlighting the drawbacks in their video (linked above): "I think they would use most of the money to put an extra star on the flag."

Indeed.

/snark.

We have two proposals (0.00 / 0)
Where to split and what to call the remainders...nominations are now being accepted.

Will commit political science for food.

The east part shall be know (4.00 / 3)
as New Jimmies.

The west, New Sprinkles.

Alternately it could be New Faucet and New Spigot.

If you don't understand that, you haven't lived here long enough to be separating cheese slices, much less NJ.

We use the old names... (0.00 / 0)
The Indian name Tuowan for the north and the Swedish name and Sigsonein for the south.

NY STOLE OUR LAND! (0.00 / 0)
and we want it back.

That little part looks like a graduate's mortar board

How about Upper and Lower Jersey? (0.00 / 0)
Dealing with the Brunswicks is easy. New Brunswick should be in Upper Jersey since that also sounds like a neighborhood in Manhattan. North Brunswick should be in Lower Jersey just to confuse people. We can just burn down East Brunswick on general principle (I never liked them anyway and, quite frankly, it'd be a good excuse to replace the Brunswick Square Mall with something...good).

More to the point, though, your description of North and South Jerseyans is remarkably accurate.

not quite ... (4.00 / 4)
To maintain the existing level of confusion, North B., which is south of New B. but north of S. B., should be in U.J., gerrymandered through the smoking ruins of E. B. (which should be renamed the WB just on general principle). Thus, keeping New B. in L.J., as well as Franklin and S. B.

It's really important to remove any taint of spatial orientation N/S/E/W. Please refer to I-287 and or I-95/295 for instructive examples..

How about NY and PA (0.00 / 0)
If we agree that it is unnecessary for our state to have 600+ school districts, can't we also agree that it would make more sense to have one less state instead of splitting New Jersey into two?

New York could take Bergen Passaic, Sussex, Hudson, Essex, Morris and Union Counties.  Pennsylvania could take the rest.  I haven't looked up the populations of each of the counties, but I think that would probably split the state's population pretty closely in two.

I'm sure that one of our wonky number crunchers can tell me how far off my guess is.

secession (0.00 / 0)
Strangely enough, the secession proposal that was brought up... has already happened(somewhat):

"On Election Day in 1980, 51 percent of voters in six South Jersey
counties declared in a non-binding referendum that they wanted to
secede and establish a new state ....

The secession vote had no official weight.  It essentially was a
megaphone-scale opinion poll that caught Trenton's attention.

Na Ga Happen (4.00 / 2)
Mr. Hart's most excellent modest proposal fails when neither half agrees to take Monmouth County.
;-)

A third state? n/t (0.00 / 0)

Good grief! (0.00 / 0)
So the US would have two Floridas..with 2 senators each, BTW.

Now there's a thought that should give us pause....

"Do what you can, with what you have, where you are."  (Teddy Roosevelt)

Two elections to screw up n/t (4.00 / 2)

Will commit political science for food.

Oregon too (0.00 / 0)
I'm waiting for the live Obama stream out of KVAL in Oregon, and I see this poll:

Do you support creating a 51st state out of Eastern Oregon?

Chris Christie forced a company to endow a professorship at the law school he went to.
