Corzine Thinking Layoffs

by: firstamend07

Sat Nov 08, 2008 at 01:21:54 PM EST

This from Michael Symons of Gannett : Corzine said on Countdown with Keith Olbermann. "If we continue to stay in this economic slide that we're in, we're going to see major layoffs, furloughs, cutbacks by state and local governments across the country. They're going to join the parade of organizations that are laying people off and increasing the public sector unemployed."

It seems Corzine is ready to turn his back on the CWA. He knows that a state worker layoff will be necessary if he wants to sell other cutbacks. Apparently he has no fear of a CWA backlash since he knows , like most other politicians know , that CWA is a paper tiger and incapable of mounting any response that would be more than a " huff and a puff ".

No pay increase or layoffs (0.00 / 0)
There will be a choice given to the CWA leadership and the  concern is that these people , who are not state workers themselves, will sacrafice the few to keep the money flowing into the union coffers.

The choice will be accept state worker layoffs of 10% or keep everyone working and  decline the 3.5% pay increase due in the next fiscal year.

It will be a public relations diaster , and political folly, for the Governor to not ask the state work force to be part of the " pain" .

If polled the state workers , if given the choice , would vote to save the jobs of their co-workers and give up the pay increase, but the CWA leadership will never accept that option. Their budgets and high salaries are based on the dues deduction  percentage of  the pay increases that are given to workers. It is much easier for CWA union leaders to endure  layoffs then a stagnant dues deduction.

It is feared that these low seniority workers will be sacraficed by the CWA leadership and that these people , who will not only lose their paychecks , but also their families health benefits, will have no voice.

For those of you who read this please remember , there are two sides to every story and when quotes are attributed to CWA union leaders those quotes must not be taken as pure truth or as " representative" of all state workers.

It is my viewpoint that jobs can and must be saved.
