A note to gun owners in NJ-5: you're being lied to.

by: Adam L

Fri Oct 31, 2008 at 08:30:00 AM EDT

In today?s Bergen Record, there is an article about guns and the race here in NJ-5 between Dennis Shulman and Scott Garrett.  And in this article (not surprisingly) is a number of thoughts, mischaracterizations and outright misleading comments about Dennis Shulman and his views on gun ownership.

In the press conference announcing Mayor Michael Bloomberg?s endorsement of Shulman, both of them had a lot to say about guns and gun ownership.  Not surprisingly, none of this seems to matter to Garrett as he panders to gun owners? fears about the ?evil lib?rul boogyman who wants to take all of your guns away?.  And the following comment by a Garrett supporter is quite telling of the fearmongering that Garrett has resorted to:

Gas station owner Bob Guidone of Wantage received his postcard in the mail on Monday, but didn't need any convincing. He's a big Garrett supporter, and says the incumbent understands his constituents.

"Up here, we like our freedom and we do like to hunt," Guidone said. The biggest issue for Guidone is his right to bear arms as guaranteed by the Second Amendment, and he's suspicious of what Obama's recent pledge to "redistribute the wealth" would mean for a small business owner like himself.

"We work hard and we don't rely on government handouts," he said. "And don't forget that Hitler took all the guns away. That's how he took over Germany."

Yes, Hitler and a rabbi from Northern New Jersey have a LOT in common.  Right?.

The reality is, Shulman is against a few very sensible things relating to guns ? none of which apply to anyone that isn?t, quite frankly, such a fanatic that they are willing to put the safety of children and innocent citizens about their own extreme narrow and uncompromising agenda.  And so I will put it very clearly (as both Shulman and Bloomberg said very clearly on numerous occasions):

Dennis Shulman does not want to, nor has he said that he has any interest in ?taking guns away? from hunters or gun owners who are not criminals.

Period.

What Shulman has said is that he can?t understand why lawful gun owners and hunters either can?t see the difference between (or are being duped by the NRA) child safety locks on guns so that kids don?t accidentally shoot themselves in the head.   Or the difference between hunting or collecting guns and loopholes that allow gun dealers who have lost their license to sell guns being able to sell them on the streets ? getting them into the hands of criminals who kill innocent bystanders, whether they are teens or soldiers.

It is really that straightforward.  Hunters will keep their guns.  Anyone who says otherwise is either lying or, well, lying.  To make a vote based on false beliefs is a shame and a travesty that someone is either willfully or willingly uninformed when making such a huge decision.

And it is time that gun owners, gun collectors and hunters in NJ-5 know the truth about Dennis Shulman, as well as the misleading information they are getting from Scott Garrett and the NRA.

Just to make a point (4.00 / 1)
Dennis should carry a sidearm and ask people if they think it should be locked or not - considering he is legally bling, that might convince a few.

Typos Gone Wild! (4.00 / 1)
Somehow, I think "legally bling" could make it as a new thing.

Oh, and another point (4.00 / 1)
Hitler "took over Germany" by winning a key bloc in an election.  Gun control took no place in it.  The Nazis did not address gun control until 1938 - years after they gained control of Germany.  In fact, it would be impossible for Hitler to have taken control of Germany by using gun control because he could not have implemented gun control laws until after he won power.

The Nazis did benefit from generally strict gun control laws in Europe - the Polish Jews, for instance, truly fought on nothing but courage in the Warsaw slums because no guns were available.

By the way - it should be noted that the Nazi gun laws prohibited ownership of guns for Jews and non-Germans.  It also prohibited these groups from selling guns, as well.

Totally stupid - though very common - comparison.

well.... (4.00 / 1)
stoopid is as stoopid does.  Garrett and the NRA have been making their living off of it.

The ridiculous comparison is just that - even more so this year with a rabbi running.

Scott Garrett - on the wrong side of, well, everything.

It's Not "Stupid" If It's Works.... (4.00 / 1)
...too many people actually believe this shit.

We all have to get way more serious about how we combat this kind of Goebellian propaganda.

And it needs to be 24/7/365 not just around election campaigns.

November 5th is the beginning, not an end.

Garrett is a Troll.....only his red herrings and lies operate in th eelectoral realm. (0.00 / 0)
...and that applies to most of the Republican "talking points/attacks" that they always pull out of their asses in the closing days of an election.

They know they lose every time if there is any real clear sensible discussion of the issues in any intelligent detail.

Thier lies and negative attacks need to be utterly destroyed from the get go; that means aggressive hard assed campaigning from the beginning.

If there is anyone that's voting for Garrett because they actually believe that the Democrat is a terrorist sympathizer or worse yet had an agenda akin to Hitler's; that's because we, as Democrats, have been way way too nice to these lying scumbags.   It may seem "mean" but these people (right wing radical fanatics with hidden Dominionistic agendas like Bachmann/Palin/Garrett) don't deserve "the benefit of the doubt".....I hope we can learn and remember that lesson for the future.

This is the kind of shit that needs to be settled and taken off the table at the beginning of a campaign, not at the end.

Properly inoculated the electorate wouldn't fall for this putrescence....even in good times.

We happen to be living in the midst of real crises; so maybe this time out the reality will drown out the noise/lies.

Let's hope so.

Go Shulman!!!

Guns and (no) Butter (4.00 / 2)
I've been thinking about the pry it from my cold dead hand part of the 5th CD since the Bloomberg endorsement.

I was dissapointed in his emphasis on gun control at the expense of "pragmatic solutions" to pressing issues.  Clearly, he should be concerned about unregulated firearms in an urban area - as should Cory Booker.

But in Northern Passaic and westward it's a non-starter that seems to be starting up earlier than usual.  Every year in November we have the "bear wars" just before the state decides whether or not to hold a bear hunting season.  The NRA weighs in on one side and the bear huggers on the other.

It wouldn't matter what Shulman or Bloomberg said, hunters and other gun owners have a knee jerk reaction to any discussion of  regulation, which translates to, "They want to take our guns away."

So, I was hoping that more voters here in "asparagus," a term I have happily ripped off from TS, and in broccoli would be talking about the economy, the war(s), health care, the environment, etc.  But no.

People vote for Ernie, not only because he is against gun control, but because he votes "no" on every government expenditure, even if it will help his constituents.  It's like reading "What's the Matter with Kansas," only its happening here in north and western Jersey.

Three areas that have received increasing attention over the last 6 months are child health care, home foreclosures and food.  Yeah, freakin' food.

Over the years, there have been fund raisers for children who have some unbelievable illness such as brain cancer that their parents' insurance won't cover or there is no insurance.  These kinds of fund raisers have increased dramatically.  Thank you Ernie for voting against S-Chip.

There are an increasing number of homes going into foreclosure. It's not "those people" who put no money down on a house or "those people"  who took out a line of credit for a "lavish vacation" or to buy a 52" flat screen TV.  It's the folks who usually make timely mortgage payments who may have lost a job, had a horrendous medical expense or indeed, took out a line of credit they can no longer afford - to say, insulate their homes in an effort to lower their heating bills.  Well, people, Ernie will vote against helping you out.  You won't have a home, so you won't have to worry about heating costs.

Every weekend someone is outside the local supermarket raising money for something - the school band, the animal shelter, whatever.  Lately, people are out asking shoppers to make purchases and donate them to food pantry boxes.  Even the library has a donation bin, ferchrissakes.  What are you going to do about that, Ernie?

The dirty little secret is that more than a few people here are struggling with healthcare costs, mortgage payments and having a meal at night.

And Mr. Guidone is worried about his guns and his so called freedom, everyone else be damned.  Don't worry sir, Karma's a .....
