NY Times endorses Adler, Shulman & Lance

by: Jason Springer

Sat Oct 25, 2008 at 11:34:37 AM EDT

They only made choices in three NJ races:
3rd District: The race in this district from the Camden suburbs into rural Burlington County is for an open seat. State Senator John Adler is a thoughtful, moderate Democrat who has helped ban smoking and curb predatory lending. The Republican is Chris Myers, the mayor of Medford Township who has held executive positions at Lockheed Martin. Mr. Myers has a businessman's view of what needs to be done in Washington. Mr. Adler would focus more on the middle class, including tax relief. We endorse John Adler.

5th District: Residents in this stretch from northeast Bergen County to rural northwestern New Jersey are represented by Scott Garrett, one of the most conservative members of Congress. Mr. Garrett supports constitutional amendments to ban abortion, even in cases of rape and incest. He backs President Bush?s tax cuts for the wealthy and limited aid for the poor.

We endorse Dennis Shulman, a Democrat who is a rabbi and psychologist. Mr. Shulman says he would work to mitigate global warming. He would also take an interest in psychological counseling and educational opportunities for veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan.

7th District: In the race for the open seat in this central state region, Republican Leonard Lance and Democrat Linda Stender are both excellent candidates.

Mr. Lance has a fine record in the State Senate, where as Republican leader he won praise from both parties for his fiscal conservatism and his thoughtful views on social issues. Ms. Stender is a progressive Democrat who would make a worthy member of Congress. But Mr. Lance's leadership qualities and his voice of moderation are needed now in Congress and in the Republican Party. We endorse Leonard Lance.

Stender brought this on herself (4.00 / 1)
that campaign has been lousy.  She should have had it wrapped up by the time the primary was over.  Instead, she dithered, so this could be written:
Stender, by contrast, too often speaks in broad generalities about issues on both the state and federal level. Her record in Trenton is unremarkable, as she has remained far from the spotlight despite now serving her fourth term in the Assembly during an era of Democratic control. She did spearhead the legislative effort establishing the Global Warming Response Act establishing mandatory reductions of greenhouse gas emissions. But it is easy to envision her serving as a quiet rubber-stamp vote for whatever party leadership wants in Congress.

Try as I might, I can't find anything to refute it.

That was my problem with Linda... (0.00 / 0)
I asked her "Do you support constuction of nuclear power plants?"

I still don't know the answer.

Lance a moderating voice? (4.00 / 4)
Who is it Lance would be moderating?  If the Republicans were in charge then maybe you could say he was moderating, but its not like the current crop of Congressional Democrats are ideological zealots.

Essentially the Times is saying, "We had to endorse one Republican, and since Garrett is a psycho and Myers is a chump we picked the nice guy."

Maybe (4.00 / 1)
they were comparing him to Garrett and Frelinghuysen?

It was a cheap shot (4.00 / 1)
It sounds as if the NY Times needed some "balance" and didn't want to appear to be a liberal newspaper.  Also, I have heard that the editorial page editor is a Republican.  They gain readers by endorsing a rabbi and they needed someone to take a potshot at.  Usually, women are the targets, and, sure enough, Stender is the one they choose.  I think the endorsement of Lance against her is a cheap shot that had nothing to do with the merits of the candidates.  Remember this is the same NY Times that told us we needed the bailout and is now so surprised that the banks haven't used the money to make loans.

abortion (0.00 / 0)
conspiracy theories aside, maybe the NYTimes didn't want to endorse a candidate that they regard as ostensibly a one-note campaign.

you need to start picking your shots (0.00 / 0)
highlighting the Inquirer's endorsement of Zimmer and attacking the Stender campaign while working for Adler does not help Adler.

I'm sure (0.00 / 0)
there will be lots of discussion about the strategy and message of campaigns after the election. Until then, we still have time to make these endorsements not matter in the long run by winning at the ballot box.

Times isn't only one... (0.00 / 0)
ok, so maybe the Times endorsed Lance as their token GOPer.  But how do you explain the Ledger, Courier, Home News, Bernardsville News....all the papers have endorsed Lance?

the facts is: Stender has run a poor campaign.  she wasted her only advantage -- money -- and now it's no longer an advantage.

She's attacked Lance with the same campaign plan she used for Fergie -- a huge mistake.

I'd argue that last cycle was her best shot.

She may still win, but it'll be b/c of Obama wave, and not her inept campaign.
