The Big Question

by: Hopeful

Tue Oct 21, 2008 at 02:40:56 AM EDT

Super-Blogger Matthew Yglesias is also on the Chris Smith tuition story and asks the big question as only he can:

Is UVA really so much more prestigious than Rutgers?

The comments in response overwhelmingly say "Yes."

This is time for all the regulars and the lurkers to come forward here and let us know if you agree.

You're kidding, right??? n/t (0.00 / 0)

Only in reputation. (3.00 / 1)
UVA is considered to be more prestigious than RU, but the reality is otherwise.  As an RU alum, I can say a top-notch education is there if you want it, but it's also possible to skate through and pick up a degree with little effort, if that's what you want.  UVA alums have told me it's no different there, although their campus is much prettier (no contest).  I've met lots of UVA and RU grads over the years, and you wouldn't know there's any quality differential between the schools; some are brilliant, a few are morons, most are in between.

Yeah (0.00 / 0)
prestigious:
The University of Virginia remains the No. 2 best public university in the 2009 edition of the U.S. News and World Report rankings. In the 12 years since U.S. News began ranking public universities as a separate category, U.Va. has ranked either No. 1 or No. 2.

For in-state tuition paying students, it's also a great bargain.  Much cheaper than Rutgers.

college.

Me, RU Alumni, '89. My dad who is a PhD Math professor at SUNY@ Stony Brook is so proud of his boy.  :-)

Check out my 3 paragraph primer on Polywell Fusion.

It's UVA in a heartbeat (0.00 / 0)

Of course, Virginia and NJ seem to be racing each other to the bottom in terms of supporting their colleges, so maybe it'll change in the future.
