John McCain Doesn't Care About The Health Of The Mother

This is amazing, and should be forwarded to all the wavering pro-choice Republicans out there.

John McCain mocks -- with air quotes and a sneer -- the idea that the health of the mother should be taken into consideration during emergencies involving pregnant women.

As a Pro-life Democrat (0.00 / 0)
I've got to give that one to McCain.  The phrase "health of the mother" has been legally found to be meaningless -- It could be found to apply to any situation whatsoever -- headaches, stretch marks etc.

So to say that "I oppose late-term abortions except to save the health of the mother"  means "I oppose any restrictions on late-term abortions"

Actually (0.00 / 0)
the term, while currently defined broadly, could be defined.  It isn't string theory.

headaches & stretch marks (0.00 / 0)
The funny thing is, when asked to cite an instance where a woman has had a late-term abortion on account of headaches or stretch marks, abortion opponents fall silent.

That's not the point. (0.00 / 0)
If you know anything about the law, you'll know that any loophole will eventually be exploited.

The better request is "cite an instance where a woman asked for a late-term abortion for health reasons ... and was denied".  Abortion rights supporters fall silent on that one.

Everyone here is saying "we can make it more precise" --- well, then MAKE IT MORE PRECISE!  Write an abortion law which says "These are the reasons when you can have an abortion, and these are the reason when you can't" --- but that will never happen because the pro-abortion rights side will NEVER admit there's ever a reason to deny an abortion.

So, take your own "sanctimonious shit" elsewhere.  I stand by the comment -- "except for the health of the mother" is just a legal dodge to say "no restrictions on abortions, ever"

Something fishy here (0.00 / 0)
That's a complete red herring.

Had my family member written about below gotten pregnant four months later she would have been unable to get a late term abortion.  The fetus was totally non-viable and posed a risk to her health, but under current law she would have been forced to stay pregnant another six weeks.  There's your example.

But your "I don't have to provide evidence to back up my assertions" is complete bunk.  You made a claim that "health of the mother" could be stretch marks, which is a bullshit claim you can't back up.

Late term abortions were legal for many years and there is no evidence -- not one documented case -- of someone staying pregnant for seven months and then suddenly realizing that they would get stretch marks and so aborted the fetus.  Not one.  It's a complete fabrication.

I was going to let this pass (4.00 / 1)
but I find it highly insulting to all of us who really believe that the health of the mother is vitally important concern.

The health of the mother to most people means the risk of permanent disability or death.  It's not about vanity or discomfort, and as Thurman said above those could be discounted.  Essentially you are saying that women are vain whiners who kill babies for their own petty desires.  How arrogant you are to insinuate that and totally discount the valid and rational reasons some women might have to protect their lives by having and abortion.

Just before the current ban passed a family member discovered that her fetus was not developing a brain and would not survive birth.  She had previously decided to go through with the pregnancy despite underlying health problems of her own, but when she discovered that the baby would not live they decided to have a intact dilation and extraction to protect her health.  Had the baby come to term she might have been permanently damaged and unable to have other children.  Or, because of the underlying health issues, she could have died.

She has since had two children of her own, awesome kids I love very much.

This was not about fucking stretch marks and headaches, but about her health and the children she wanted to have.  She was devastated by the choice she had to make, but she had that choice and made the right one.  She still mourns the loss, as does her family.  And you with your bullshit talking points totally discount the pain she went through and we continue to go through today.

And you have, through your activsm and associations, taken that choice away from every woman out there who may be in a similar situation.

Take your sanctimonious shit somewhere else.  If you want to have a real discussion, we can have it.  But don't peddle insulting, arrogant talking-point bullshit about stretch marks here.
