Vote Absentee, and Do it Now!

by: huntsu

Mon Oct 13, 2008 at 09:30:00 AM EDT

There are going to be problems at the polls due to the amazing influx of new votes.  Here's a piece from the local Gannet papers today:

In at least three counties - Essex, Passaic and Somerset - election officials do not think they will be able to process every form in time to get every registered voter in the books that workers use to check in voters at polling places.

Voters whose names do not appear in the books are entitled to use paper provisional ballots. The provisional ballots are counted after officials verify the voters are registered.

By the way, Blue Jersey scooped them on this last week.  :-)

But the point is that every provisional ballot is one or two poll workers taken off the tables, one or two poll worker who isn't there to help other voters cast their ballots.

Which means longer lines, lots longer lines.

So please, please, please vote absentee this year.  And get everyone you know pulling the Democratic lever to do so as well.  It will not only ensure that their votes get counted and the lines are shorter, but it will make our GOTV efforts easier on election day.

Last day Oct. 24th? (0.00 / 0)
I'm not sure but I think the last day to get your absentee ballot is next Friday, Oct. 24.

If you have the time, do it in person: go to the board of elections in your county, fill out the form, hand it in, and wait to be given your ballot. That's what I did last Fri. in Mercer Co., and it was interesting (to say the least) as the office staff was up to their ears in new registrations and it's just fascinating to see their heads spinning. (In Mercer, everyone was happy and upbeat but also overwhelmed - there were piles of new registrations all over the place, in an orderly fashion, mind you, but the work had expanded to cover all available horizontal space).

So ... it took only 40 minutes to park the car, walk a fair distance to the county building, find the board of elections, sign the form, get the ballot, and walk back to the car, and another 15 maybe to fill it out and get a stamp and mail it (I was parked right next to the PO). If you do live in Mercer, parking near the old courthouse (209 S. Broad) is tight, so I suggest you ride down S. Broad and make a right onto Front - there is usually metered parking across from the NJN building and you just have to walk down to Market through Mill Hill back up to Broad. Not too bad.

You can request them by mail ... (0.00 / 0)
seven days prior to the election, which is the 28th or 29th.

Also, you can get one the day before the election, November 3, by going to the county clerk's office in person by 3 p.m.

From NJ Div of Elections

A voter may apply for an absentee ballot by completing an Absentee Ballot Application (see below) and mailing the application to their County Clerk by mail up to 7 days prior to the election. A voter may also apply in person to the County Clerk until 3:00 p.m., the day before the election. The County Clerk cannot accept faxed copies of an Absentee Ballot Application since an original signature is required.
