Stats of the Day

by: Jason Springer

Sat Oct 11, 2008 at 05:31:27 PM EDT

Courtesy of a NJ Democratic State Committee Press Release:
  • This year, we have 556,000 newly-registered Democratic voters; an unprecedented surge fueled by anti-Bush sentiment, pro-Democrat support, Obama enthusiasm, young voters and the growing recognition of the importance of the election.

  • The partisan advantage in New Jersey is now totals 1.6 million Democrats to less than 1 million Republicans. Last year, the party split was 1 million Democrats to 830,000 Republicans.

  • Democrats now have the voter-registration advantage in 15 counties to 6 counties for the GOP. Last year, the split was 11 to 10 in favor of Democrats

  • The ongoing ratio of new party registrations is Three To One in favor of Democrats.
  • Let's hope these numbers help candidates up and down the ballot on Election Day.

    15 counties down (0.00 / 0)
Let's make sure we do two things this campaign season and beyond November: 1) work hard to make strong gains in those counties that have just flipped to a Democratic registration advantage and 2) work hard to spread our message and use creative outreach to turn those other six counties blue!

    i fear... (4.00 / 1)
...i fear that folks will read these impressive numbers and get complacent or assume that this is gonna be easy or something.

it's NOT gonna be easy.  i don't care how many natural advantages progressives have this season.

So stats can give me some solace and help with the tea leaves.  But statistics don't vote. they don't volunteer and they don't donate money.

    people do.

    Which counties? (0.00 / 0)
do Republicans still have an advantage? I'd guess warren, sussex, burlington...not sure about the others.  Cumberland?  Hudson?

Ok, I almost got that with a straight face.

    Haha (0.00 / 0)
Definitely Ocean, and probably Cape May as well. I'd also guess Atlantic.

    [ Parent ]
    We've had an advantage in Atlantic for a while. (3.50 / 2)
    The six are:
    Cape May (14,042-27,475)
    Hunterdon (17,335-32,633)
    Morris (69,267-110,139)
    Ocean (78,186-99,795)
    Sussex (15,915-36,327)
    Warren (14,324-22,790)

    Ocean is getting closer (0.00 / 0)
Which is good news. The Republicans are particularly rabid here, however. The local chat forums are mind-boggling.

As scarce as truth is, the supply has always been in excess of the demand.
