by: huntsu

The Damned Thing Will Pass (0.00 / 0)
I hope the NJ reps that voted against it will hold on principle.

Pelosi/Reid are caving in to the big money.

They've just reframed the bailout as a "rescue" and scared the shit of the nation (and both presidential campaigns) .  The economic terrorism/extortion will "succeed" today.

Ironically, instead of "sweetening" the deal in terms of more "bottom up" help for the victims....this revised bill is designed to pick up more of the Republican ideologue's votes.....it's actually giving the uber rich more tax breaks.

Is this better than the 3 page total scam originally proposed?  Sure!  But Paulson/Bush never expected to get that (they would have taken it if it was given though).

All this bailout will do is get us through the election so the toxic shit hits the fan next year..and if/when Obama wins he will be totally blamed by the Republicans......if McCain steals it, they will still find some pretext to blame the Democratic congress.

Compromising with these bums doesn't work.   You really do have to take a stand and stick to your guns, win or lose.

The whole SYSTEM is radically screwed up; and nothing less than comprehensive systemic solutions will heal this.

Meanwhile, we are enriching the very people who have conned us in the first place.

It is NO mere coincidence that this all "broke" just before a general election.

This is like putting off a visit to the dentist when you have an abscess because you have taken some Oxycontin to kill the pain.

The problems are all still there and will only get worse the longer they are swept under the rug.

Perhaps an all out depression is what it will take to finally get the nations attention....meanwhile the Palinesque charm campaign of winks and bullshit seems to be "working".

We can survive become collectively poor.  As awful as that would be; it's not the greatest danger confronting us.

My largest concern is whether or not our already threatened and damaged democracy will survive an extended period of real hardship for, say. 150 million Americans?

When large (I mean REALLY large) numbers of people finally realize that their whole way of life has been destroyed by thieves and liars....that they have been conned; then things could get very ugly very fast.    Then those with the money/power would feel justified in imposing draconian measures to preserve "order".

Of course, none of this HAS to happen...we still have a modicum of freedom/democracy that we can choose to use......or lose.

Clarification/Correction.... (0.00 / 0)
We can survive become collectively poor.  As awful as that would be; it's not the greatest danger confronting us.

Oversimplification there....needs to be spelled out a bit.

If we are "collectively" poor.....yes, people pull together and find ways to deal with hardship.  The Great Depression...was transformed by Roosevelt's leadership n a way that made people believe that we are all somehow "in it together".

If the rich think that what we have now is "class warfare" they are in for a rude awakening when most of the country can't feed itself or find an afrodable place to live...that's what it can come down to.

Without the kind of leadership Roosevelt provided, the "appeal" of fascism becomes very tempting to the sociopaths seeking raw power and to a frightened/angry population ready to grasp at anything to feel that "security" and "order" will be restored.

I don't see that potential in anywhere on McCain, there is something profoundly pathological and tortured about him that is terrifying.   Given enough power he's capable of anything.

I've already gone way beyond the "topic" at hand....the problem with reality is that it doesn't present itself in discrete "subject modules".

Everything is connected and everything is complex.   That's why there is NO substitute for intelligent/wholistic solutions....nothing else ever really works.
