Promoted from the diaries - Thurman
Last Monday, George W. Bush came to New Jersey to raise money for some conservative Republicans seeking election to Congress. The President knows these congressional candidates will work hard to pursue his policies, and that?s why he came to our State even though his popularity here is abysmal. Now, Leonard Lance and Chris Meyers might have George W. Bush swooping in to raise big bucks for their campaigns, but that doesn't mean we can?t do something about it.
Like most New Jersey residents, I don?t live in a swing district. So I won't be able to cast a vote to stop these Bush Republicans. I won't be able flip a seat to the Democratic side of the aisle at the ballot box on Election Day. But, I still want to do something to give Barack Obama a larger congressional majority. That's why, a week from tomorrow - next Tuesday, October 7th - I'm helping put together a fundraiser for Linda Stender's campaign in Hoboken. |
| I have been an admirer and supporter of Linda Stender?s for several years. She is a strong, progressive voice, and has long demonstrated her capacity for sensible public policy at the local and State levels of government. I hosted a fundraiser for Linda Stender when she first ran for Congress in 2006, and I?m happy to do so again.
For those of us who live in so-called ?safe districts,? there are still lots of ways to make a difference this year. Some of you will be driving to swing states, like Pennsylvania, to help with a field operation. And some will be making phone calls to get-out-the-vote. Some who are still able to in these tough economic times, will be giving money Barack Obama. But, I really hope some of you will also come out next Tuesday to make sure Linda Stender has the resources she needs to emerge victorious on Election Day.
The record of the George W. Bush presidency should give pause to any undecided voters still out there. Thanks to his failed policies, our country is fighting a ruinous war in Iraq, our economy is reeling, the budget deficit and national debt are at historic records, and our working families are left holding the bag. This week, Congress will vote on a bail-out package for Wall Street that will further burden the American taxpayer to the tune of $700 billion. Many of my neighbors in Hoboken have already been greatly affected by the recent developments in the financial services sector. Some have even lost their jobs. Now more than ever, we need leaders in Congress who will stand strong against the Republican policies that are hurting our families and our wallets.
As a Councilman, I?m working hard to bring about a more affordable Hoboken. And although this is an uphill struggle in the wake of President Bush?s economic failures, it is not impossible if we have partners in Washington who are looking out for us. Just as competent leadership is imperative in City Hall, we need the same in the halls of Congress and in the White House. Whether it?s at the local level or the national level, we need to be able to trust our leaders to manage the economy the same way a family has to manage their bills. That?s why we need Barack Obama fighting for us as the next President of the United States. And it?s why we need to send Linda Stender to Congress.
So, if you?re free next Tuesday October 7th, I hope you can make it to out to Hoboken to support Linda Stender. The fundraiser will be at NINE restaurant, 333 Washington Street, and there are several contribution levels. State Senator Sandra Cunningham will be the special guest and it promises to be a great night! If you have any questions at all, please email us at Hoboken@LindaStenderforCongress.com.
Also, if you send your check in before midnight tomorrow -- September 30th ? it has the added benefit of counting to this fundraising quarter.
We need strong Democrats like Linda Stender fighting for us with Barack Obama in Washington. After eight years of failed policies from an uninspired Administration, we deserve better. We deserve competent leadership. We deserve Linda Stender. Please join me on October 7th to help say no to George W. Bush, and yes to change and Linda Stender. |
