Anyone Else Get A Weird Call Last Night?

by: nathanrudy

Tue Sep 09, 2008 at 08:02:16 AM EDT

Last night I was in the back yard with my daughter Kendy and my wife came out with the phone.  "He's right here," she said and handed me the phone.

"Hello," I said.  "This is Nathan."

"Are you going to support your Democratic people this year?" said a woman's voice.

"What?"

"Are you going to support your Democratic people this year?" she said again.

"Who is this?"

"I'm calling to find out if you are supporting Democrats," she said.

"Where are you calling from?  Is this a poll?"

"I'm in Minnesota.  It's not a poll."

"Are you working for Barack Obama?  Or Linda Stender?  Or the NJ Coordinated campaign?"

"No," she replied.  "I'm from Minnesota."

"Do you work for the Democrats?"

"Yes, I do.  I work for (company name unintelligible) in Minnesota.  We're calling for the Democrats," she maintained.

"Why?" I asked, confused.

"To find out if you are supporting Democrats," she said.

"I'm concerned that the way you are calling people is going to put them off from the Democratic candidates ..."

No more land line = (0.00 / 0)
no more mysterious calls for me.

But it is curious ... if they call again, roll with it instead of derailing the caller for the script. You may get a better idea what was up.

That's the weird thing ... (0.00 / 0)
She didn't sound like she had a script.

She just asked the first question with no lead in, no hello, no nothing.

It was bizarre.

Did *69 give you anything? n/t (0.00 / 0)

Should have done that ... (0.00 / 0)
damn, wasn't thinking.

If Someone Knocks On Your Door.... (4.00 / 1)
.....you get to see their face.   You even get to record them with cameras and to record their "spiel" if you like.

Yet, it's still legal for people/companies to block caller ID data.

All incoming calls should be have the caller ID data stored in a phone company database so that you can later access it as required.

The call sounded very suspicious; something nefarious was happening there.

This is what government is for, to protect us from the manipulations and the scams.

The time for people/entities to able to be anonymous (in a free society) is long past.

I bet that 90% of the population would welcome such protections...yet, it likely won't happen so long as the folks who write our laws are more beholden to commercial/marketing interests than they are to what ordinary folks want.

Meanwhile Nathan, you did the right thing to question the caller......the fact that she shriveled up and ran away confirms that.

No (4.00 / 1)
"The time for people/entities to able to be anonymous (in a free society) is long past. "

There is always space for being anonymous, and with good reason.  Whistleblowing for one.  Fear for safety is another.

Just look on this blog -- a lot of good stuff comes from anonymous people.

It can be abused, but that doesn't mean it should be curtailed.

You Misread Me.... (0.00 / 0)
Look at the expression in parenthesis, "In a free society"

We are still working on that one....

Note that all your rationales for anonymity are fear based.   When there is no fear, one has no need for anonymity.

When people stand up for what they believe good things happen.

There is indeed always some risk in standing up and standing out.  You know that from your own experience.

I wish to live in an America and in a world where people aren't afraid.  And the only way to get to that place is for some people to set an example and to have the courage of their convictions....and yes, again, that entails some risk.

The alternative is turning into a "state" like North Korea or Sudan or Somalia or China or even Taiwan.

It's so ironic that Bush/McCain talk about corage and service to country in the cause of freedom; when in fact they promote fear and conformity.

Anyway, I'll stop here....it's a large discussion.

BTW (0.00 / 0)
If you knew the name and phone number of the person calling you, that wound up hanging up in fear and running away when you asked questions, I bet you would call them up and give em a piec of yer mind.

No misreading. (0.00 / 0)
You had the frees society thing in parens, but had "The time ... is long past" in the main sentence.

That means, at least the way you wrote it, that the time has passed for anonymity.  It has not.

90% of the population would welcome lots of things. (0.00 / 0)
That doesn't make those things right.

You say the information should be in a database. It is. But you need a warrant to get it, as you should.

Your Right To Privacy Ends When You... (0.00 / 0)
knock on my front door or you call me at my home.

You have chosen to intevene in my life and to take up my time and attention.  I should have a right to know who you are and why you are in my face.

Why would you want to defend the right of others to anonymously harass you on the phone?

I think you should get the court order to be able to make an anonymous phone call, that should be the rare exception that requires a special dispensation.

In any event, given the web (voip) and disposable cell phones and calling cards and pay phones etc etc etc there is little chance in the forseeable future that real privacy can be assured for ordinary citizens.

The irony is that the NSA and God knows how many other agencies already have ways of tracking and tracing most of this stuff anyway....only they aren't necessarily on "our" side.  lol
