Haven't done one of these in a while. Are they useful?

  • 60% of New Jerseyans give Bush two thumbs down. 37% haven't been paying attention. Among women, his numbers get even worse: 28%-68%.

  • Dick Cheney was in Newark today for a fundraiser for Tom Kean, Jr. No word yet on whether Kean Jr survived. "This gives new meaning to a campaign shooting itself in the foot" - Brad Lawrence, Menendez consultant.

  • Why does NJ support a $1.6 billion plan to deepen the NY-NJ harbor but oppose a $500 million plan to do the same in the Delaware River? The official answer is environmental concerns. Hmmmm....

  • A memorial mass for Laurel Hester will be held at noon March 4 at St. Mary's By the Sea Episcopal Church in Point Pleasant. (NY Times obituary)

  • Corzine won't be raising the gasoline tax. "You can't even say it's on life support," said one legislative official. Instead, he'll borrow billions to refinance the debt. A short term fix, for sure.

  • You've got mail! And if you're Corzine, you've got 13 people to read the 7,000 letters you've gotten in the past month.

  • Jersey City's got a serious chromium problem: "On a field trip earlier this month to a known chromium waste site on Garfield Avenue - that was supposed to be covered with a protective liner - the researchers found chunks of chromium sitting on top of the liner, a block from homes."

  • Check out our mini-podcast with Sen Menendez. Then, subscribe to the podcast.

  • Links of the day: Tom Wyka for Congress, running in the 11th district. Learn more about his opponent Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen at MeetRodney.com. NJ-11 and Blue 11th are keeping an eye on Frelinghuysen, too.

Is anyone out there bummed? (0.00 / 0)
About that TTF borrowing? Although I didn't support the governor, I really thought that both candidates would have to stop the 'business as usual' frame of mind in Trenton, I just thought Forrester would be more extreme.
But borrowing to fix the TTF is only a short term solution (as noted above) and is EXACTLY what has brung us to this point.
By far the better move would have been to push to stop raiding the fund for other purposes.
I know most will say the governor had no choice, or that he is saving his political capital for other tough choices. But even though I didn't support him, I would have had way more respect for him if he raised the gas tax (regardless of what he said during the campaign) in conjunction with stopping the looting of the fund for other purposes.
It appears he's headed down the all too typical path of 'borrow now and let other governors deal with it' later.
I myself am really dissapointed. But I am willing to hold out to see what changes 'saving up' this political capital will buy him. But for now, it looks like business as usual to me.

    He's doing both (0.00 / 0)
    According to the article:
Corzine also plans to boost revenues into the fund by $114 million annually by ending the current practice of diverting truck taxes and payments from the state's toll roads into the general treasury instead of the Trust Fund.

    Good! (0.00 / 0)
I must have missed that. All I saw was the borrowing part and my eyes glazed over...
As you can tell, my position is NO MORE BORROWING for anything, as least for now.

    Regards.

    Thumbs up for news round-ups (4.00 / 1)
I'm coming out of deep lurkdom to say yes, the news round-ups are very useful to me.  I'm sure they take time to prepare, but I do appreciate them on days when I don't have a lot of time to read everything that is out there.

    good feedback. thanks. (0.00 / 0)

    Dredgeing (0.00 / 0)
This is like a factory asking the government to pay for its expansion because its current facility is too small to keep up with its orders.

Moreover, I think NJ is right to stonewall Pennsylvania on this because Philadelphia will benefit disproportionately from the dredgeing. They will say that Camden will benefit as well, and I won't argue that they won't.  However, Camden has sat right accross the bridge from Philadelphia for its entire exhistence. Yet it is still the worse city in the nation.
