Sarah Palin's "executive experience," by the numbers

by: Scott Weingart

Sun Aug 31, 2008 at 10:26:52 AM EDT

More from Joe Cryan on Sarah Palin:
"I think we compare the qualifications of both candidates, it's clear that Barack Obama's judgment is clearly better suited for the nation," he said. "I don't even know how many people there are in Alaska."

According to 2007 Census population estimates, some 683,478 people live in Alaska. Only North Dakota, Vermont, and Wyoming have fewer. Eighty-five counties in 28 states boast larger populations than Alaska, as do sixteen cities. In New Jersey, Middlesex, Essex, and Bergen counties all have more people than the entire state of Alaska. By this measure, Joe DiVincenzo and Dennis McNerney have more substantial "executive experience" than Sarah Palin.

Just 6,311 people called Wasilla, Alaska home in 2002, the last year Sarah Palin was mayor of that town. Some 92% of New Jerseyans live in a town with a population larger than 6,311.

Vermont (4.00 / 1)
Probably best to not hold the population of Alaska against Palin - plenty of us would have been more than willing to put Howard Dean in the White House, and as noted, Vermont's population is less than Alaska's. Executive experience at the state level is an important qualification, no matter which state.

Of course, Dean was in office for 11 years, re-elected five times, Lt. Governor before that. Whereas Palin's been there for less than two years, with a mayorship and a failed Lt. Governor bid before hand.

Palin takes GOP focus off economy (0.00 / 0)
Good point about Vermont. Although I concur that Howard Dean's 11 year executive experience in the Governor's office dwarfs anything that Governor Palin can boast.

Barack Obama is a graduate of Harvard (editor of Harvard Law Review), University Law Professor, community organizer where he worked knee deep in the plight of urban challenges, Illinois state legislator and a U.S. Senator. This resume also blows away anything Governor Palin offers.

McCain's selection of Governor Palin takes the focus of his campaign off of the economic problems of the middle class and places it squarely on the right-wing agenda of the fundamentalist social conservatives. This is a signal that McCain values the support of anti-abortion rights Republicans more than the broad swath of middle class families struggling under the yoke of the Bush economy.

While Obama-Biden will spend the next 64 days talking about their middle class tax cuts, the restoration of the economy, energy independence, environmental preservation and affordable accessible health care, the McCain/Palin team will be running around promoting the appointment of new Supreme Court justices who will reverse Roe v. Wade.

That's what this campaign has turned into.

Her time (0.00 / 0)
as governor of Alaska doesn't bother me.  Her time as mayor of a small town doesn't bother me.  What bothers me is the touting of her PTA experience as a qualification for the VP.

The real case, I believe, is that there are more experienced Republican women - like Elizabeth Dole, for instance - that would have done an even better job of filling the ticket.  But it isn't like McCain was going to impress me anyway.

Shotgun Wedding, anyone? (0.00 / 0)
Bet Sarah's the one wielding the shotgun - especially after touting family values and abstinence-only sex education - only to have her 17 year old daughter wind up pregnant.

Hypocrisy, they really should look it up......

One Vote.  Yours.  It really does matter.

My Guess Is.... (0.00 / 0)
.....that underneath that perky pleasant exterior and the convivial manner that Palin is a controlling dominant mom.

It wouldn't surprise me if, at some point, her daughter breaks free of the cult of Palin and tells all.

This is the problem with the Fudamentalists of all religious stripes.   Their rigid doctrines dehumanize them, their families and their communities.

The minute anyone thinks they have some kind of exclusive pipeline to God; they're already on a path to hell doing he devil's work.

This woman is even scarier than McCain.

It's ironic that McCain is running on the slogan of "country first" yet he's chosen a running mate whose root loyalty is to a bizarre group of Alaskan separatists.

Members of 'Fringe' Alaskan Independence Party Say Palin Was a Member in 90s

September 01, 2008 6:52 PM

The campaign of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., likes to herald the independence of its new running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

Officials of the Alaskan Independence Party say that Palin was once so independent, she was once a member of their party, which, since the 1970s, has been pushing for a legal vote for Alaskans to decide whether or not residents of the 49th state can secede from the United States.

Palin needs to explain why she was part of this group and to totally renounce/recant it's agenda; or McCain must take her off the ticket.

Didn't have a civil war over this kind of shit?
