What does a Sarah Palin VP candidacy mean for NJ Republicans

by: Jason Springer

Fri Aug 29, 2008 at 12:57:44 PM EDT

So the word is out that John McCain has chosen Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate to serve as Vice President.  I'm reading the reaction from local Republicans gushing and wondering what the effect of her on the ticket really means for NJ races.  First the gushing:
Lonegan thrilled with Palin pick

O'toole says Palin pick is stroke of brilliance

Allen welcomes a fellow reform Republican who took on her own party

Baroni says Alaskan Gov will put New Jersey in play

I keep hearing people talk about whether NJ is in play or not, but I don't see how Palin makes that possibility much more likely.  I wonder how she will play in districts 3, 5 and 7 where races are expected to be close.  Do Republicans really think she will be able to give their candidates an edge they need, or does she fill a void in the campaign ticket as a whole?

Her pick would seem to negate the experience argument as she has only been Governor since 2006 and served as Mayor of a small town before that.  She is pro-life, which will go over well in some parts of the state, but like a rock in others.   She supports drilling in ANWR and has encouraged John McCain to take another look at his prior opposition, which makes you wonder how NJ Republicans will respond if she comes out in support of more drilling off the Jersey shore.  She brings youth and some gender balance to the ticket which I'm sure will be exploited while trying to court those still disgruntled Clinton voters, but when women get past her gender and look at her stands, will they still support her?

Palin seems to come complete with her own built in scandal already as well.  Besides that potential issue, you would have to think that Democrats will try to tie her to Ted Stevens and all of his corruption in Alaska.  Another area sure to draw some attention is her stand on teaching creationism:

The volatile issue of teaching creation science in public schools popped up in the Alaska governor's race this week when Republican Sarah Palin said she thinks creationism should be taught alongside evolution in the state's public classrooms. Palin was answering a question from the moderator near the conclusion of Wednesday night's televised debate on KAKM Channel 7 when she said, "Teach both. You know, don't be afraid of information.
My favorite however, is what she said when asked recently about her interest in being Vice President:
Larry Kudlow of CNBC's "Kudlow & Co." asked her about the possibility of becoming McCain's ticket mate.

Palin replied: "As for that VP talk all the time, I'll tell you, I still can't answer that question until somebody answers for me what is it exactly that the VP does every day?"

Let's hope by now at least that someone has let her know what she will be doing every day should they win.  Regardless, it's certainly good to see a woman on the ticket with McCain, even if I probably won't agree with much of what she has to say.

"Teach both" creationism and evolution?

THIS is what they call progress?

I'M more experienced to be VP than she is and I still haven't got the hang of the Council thing yet.

The town she was Mayor of is smaller than most small Boroughs in NJ.  The town she was Mayor of is so small it would be considered for merging it is so small.  I am serious.

I was only elected in 2006 and I thought it was ambitious to run for Freeholder this year.

All I can say is YIKES!  I heard her speak today and all I heard was blah blah blah hockey mom, blah blah blah.  Really I was expecting her to go on about the benefits of staying home and baking cookies -which is what I do for my firefighters, but REALLY.  We are talking someone who needs to step in and BE PRESIDENT.

I'm sure she's very nice, and she is prettier than Joe Biden, but you gotta be ready to be President.  And you have to have a grasp on SCIENCE in this day and age. The war on science is what caused us to be behind the 8 ball on global warming.

Yikes!

.....this one can cut both ways.  High risk, hi reward this one feels like.

However watching her acceptance speech I felt like i was seeing a SNL parody.

Astute Observation Jay... (0.00 / 0)
When I was watching her speak today, there were moments when she veered off script and her face and voice tone (for a tiny fraction of a second) got a bit weird.

It reminded me of that wacky "cheerleader" that used to be on SNL that was always  so  oddly intense and falling down.....there's a touch of strangeness there....then again, compared to John McCain, Palin is, no doubt, a centered and well adjusted person.

I don't think either of them are qualified to be president.

I Find It Significant That McCain Didn't Choose... (0.00 / 0)
a more mature Republican woman with real national policy experience and expertise.

Instead he chooses a relatively young unseasoned attractive woman who is a rising Republican star.

McCain seems to have a penchant for choosing young attractive women to satisfy his needs.    The guy is a risk taking opportunist who seems to "fly by the seat of his pants".

Mcain's people knew he would lose so they threw this "hail Sarah" pass...and, so far, it's been successful in that it's eclipsed to story of last night's truly and genuinely amazing/substantial event.

At the end of her speech today, there was an awkward moment when McCain appeared to be trying to give her a hug and she appeared to be pulling away...this guy is a dominant hound and is just using this nice Republican lady as a political prop.

My prediction: this ploy will fail and fail big.

Anyone else (2.50 / 2)
worried for Mrs. McCain?  I was devastated to learn Edwards cheated, and McCain's done it before.  Sarah's awfully cute.......

was we saw it coming. Go back and look at our discussion way back when... multiple people cited the 'lack of sincerity' vibe they felt.

McCain is a "Dog".... (0.00 / 0)
...he's had a rep all his life for treating women as sexual objects.

If you really look closely at the whole video of the announcement there are moments there where McCain appeared to be leering and even "checking her out"......and, at the end, it looked like he was trying to hug and kiss her but she backed off.

Let's not forget McCain's reputation for "womanizing".   This is a man who dumped his first wife because she was disfigured and crippled in a car accident; then spent many months living with his newer younger prettier and richer model before he got the divorce.

McCain, in a moment of public pique called his new wife a "trollup" and a "c**t"!  And has never owned up to it or apologized.

John McCain is a adulterer and a sexist pig, imho.

The fact that the "Christian" right is enamoured of him is an indication of their own  devilish hypocrisy.

PUMA people supporting Palin (0.00 / 0)
The Republicans have got to be kidding with the VP nomination of Sarah Palin. But even worse is a Fox News interview I saw today with a woman who identified herself as a national leader of PUMA. Forgot her name but she was just coming out of Denver after that awesome acceptance speech. She declared that she and many other PUMA members will be supporting the McCain-Palin ticket because of the addition of the Alaskan Governor. And then she went on to criticize Senator Obama again for passing Hillary by for his number two spot.

I doubt that these PUMA people make up a significant part of the electorate but they just have to get over themselves. It is obvious that they are more concerned about the cult of Hillary than the substance of the issues that Hillary actually stands for.

How can a Hillary supporter run to the aid of an anti-choice, hard right-winger who is against everything Hillary has fought for, including a national health care policy?

On the other hand, I have to confess that I am attracted to the anti-corruption reform record Gov. Palin built for herself in Alaska. Gov. Palin stands up to her own political party all the time. She has successfully taken on the top powerful Republican insiders and exposed their corruption. She is a genuine reform maverick up there. What a contrast to New Jersey's own Governor who befriends the corrupt Bosses in Bergen County and elsewhere.

Of course Palin must be opposed at all costs this November. But perhaps Gov. Corzine can learn a thing or two from her example of corruption busting.

Puma & Palin (4.00 / 1)
Terry - I have a few thoughts on your comment.

The Puma phenomenon is vastly overstated.  Ya know, cable stations run out of things to say 24/7.  So they have the same vapid people  say the same insipid things.

Who are these Pumas?  Steven wrote that he was harassed in Denver by people who identified themselves as Pumas.  Ya think they were ex-Clintonistas?  Republican recruits?  Out of work actresses getting paid for a gig?

And thery are headed by a guy named Bower.  So much for women's leadership.  I think their 15 minutes are about up.

So now we have to deal with Palin.  No foreign experience, against everything socially important, including polar bears and exceptions to abortion such as rape or incest.

And not as anti-corruption as the media would like you to believe.  See Jason's link above on her version of trooper-gate.  See the 2 "quick Hits," by hopeful and dennismcgrath.  Check out Kire's link to kos.

There will be more. Josh Marshall loves to muckrake.  Firedoglake has some juicy stuff.  She even weaseled on the famous bridge to nowhere.

Let's worry less about Puma and more about ACMS - anti-corruption my ass.

.....you're a shill for Chris Christie.

Meanwhile listen to this audio and then tell me that this character was acting on his own...

http://www.gov.state.ak.us/aud...

Palin will go down, even if the state investigation is fixed and she is "cleared" before election day.   It's obvious that she abused her power to further a personal family agenda.

It sounds like her ex brother in law was indeed a creep, but to then fire the guy who refused to fire him is Nixonian.

If the MSM ever starts doing their jobs; Palin is toast.....as is McCain.

Meanwhile, "Terry" keep on trying to burnish your progressive cred so you can then genly slide in some more pro Christie propaganda.   LOL

Women Have Not Come Far (4.00 / 1)
At least in the eyes and minds of McCain and the Republicans woman are still just ornaments.

This woman was picked as the " token woman". With those same credentials, as a man, she would never have been considered.

That selection was a slap in the face to anyone who beleives that merit , not orientation , should be the judging point for a person.

Any woman who says she was for Hillary and then votes for McCain based on this woman being his VP pick is nothing more than a sexual bigot.

I almost feel sorry for her . She must realize that she was picked , not for mind but for the  fact that she can wear a dress.

The Republicans will throw her by the wayside the second they are done with her.

Hey (0.00 / 0)
John McCain can wear a dress with the best of them.  But you risk getting a glimpse of his weathered, withered former POW Grand Old Package.

Daily Kos: Sarah Palin scrubs her own Wikipedia entry? (4.00 / 1)

This reminds me of the time that some Republican campaign manager posted comments on Blue Jersey from her computer, and Juan blasted it out into the New Yorker and all over the media.

Yeah, I Noticed That At The Time... (0.00 / 0)
.....if it was just once, for a few seconds, it might have been dismissed as a coincidence; but this dog was leering at her chest repeatedly and then he would get this self satisfied smile on his mug.

I suspect that she was aware of the vibe.   At 2:38 as she's wanting to just wave to the crowd he starts stalking her and she literally backs up for a second or so, then relents and let's him give her a kiss...it was strained.    The body language tells the story.

As I said up top; the guy has all the earmarks of a dominant sexist pig.

If he can act this way on camera in front of millions of people what kind of an asshole must he be in private.

I feel  sorry for his dutiful worshiping wife who was, ironically, sitting just behind and between them.
